Indian Epigraphy by Richard Salomon Pdf

This book provides a general survey of all the inscriptional material in the Sanskrit, Prakrit, and modern Indo-Aryan languages, including donative, dedicatory, panegyric, ritual, and literary texts carved on stone, metal, and other materials. This material comprises many thousands of documents dating from a range of more than two millennia, found in India and the neighboring nations of South Asia, as well as in many parts of Southeast, central, and East Asia. The inscriptions are written, for the most part, in the Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts and their many varieties and derivatives. Inscriptional materials are of particular importance for the study of the Indian world, constituting the most detailed and accurate historical and chronological data for nearly all aspects of traditional Indian culture in ancient and medieval times. Richard Salomon surveys the entire corpus of Indo-Aryan inscriptions in terms of their contents, languages, scripts, and historical and cultural significance. He presents this material in such a way as to make it useful not only to Indologists but also non-specialists, including persons working in other aspects of Indian or South Asian studies, as well as scholars of epigraphy and ancient history and culture in other regions of the world.

Indian Epigraphy by D.C. Sircar Pdf

The most significant of India's contributions of the civilization of the world was made in the ancient period. Unfortunately, the history of this glorious epoch, which is an interesting chapter in the annals of human civilization, was lost and we have been reconstructing it on the basis of information gathered from various sources. Of these, epigraphy is the most important, since the major part of what we already know about ancient India is derived from the study of inscriptions. In the present work, Professor D.C. Sircar deals with various problems relating to Indian pigraphy and it is expected to be useful to people interested in ancient Indian history in general and Indian inscriptions in particular. Some of the topics discussed herein are: inscriptions and their evidence, languages in which the inscriptions are written, writing materials, the preparation and preservation of documents, copperplate grants, stanzas on bhumi-dana, Indian epigraphy abroad, systems of dating and the different eras, technical expressions including royal titles and official designations, taxes, land measures, nomenclature, etc. There are thirty-six plates illustrating various types of epigraphical records.

Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... THE INDIAN EMPIRE VOLUME II HISTORICAL CHAPTER I EPIGRAPHY /. Introductory Note The subject of this contribution to the Imperial Gazetteer Introducis the explanation of the nature and value of the epigraphic tOTy noteor inscriptional bases of Indian research for the pre-Musalman period. And the topic is an important one; for, not only is India particularly rich in inscriptional remains, but also those remains are the only sure grounds of historical results in every line of research connected with its ancient past. We have, however, to exclude from our treatment of this subject one branch which has always been found more generally attractive than any of the others. The inscriptions on coins and gems, better termed, by way of avoiding confusion, 'legends' on coins and gems, are epigraphic materials. But they are a special class of such materials; and the treatment of them falls, most properly, under the subdivision of pumismatology. We have to confine our attention here to those epigraphic remains which have come to be best known as 'inscriptions' by way of distinction from the numismatic materials. Nevertheless, we hope to be' able to show that our topic is no dry and dull one, but is full of interest as well as importance. The inscriptions, thus indicated as our topic, are notifications, very frequently of an official character, and generally more or less of a public nature, which recite facts, simple or complex, with or without dates, and were intended to be lasting records of the matters to which they refer. They are in almost all cases found engraved, not written. They were occasionally engraved VOL. II. B upon monuments in the shape of great monolithic columns; as, for instance, in the case of some of the moral and religious edicts...

Whispering of Inscriptions by Édith Parlier-Renault Pdf

Preface In October 2017, an international symposium was held in Paris as a tribute to Noboru Karashima who gave a new impetus to the study of South Indian and Tamil epigraphy. The contributions to this volume illustrate the wide range of related topics in the fields of archæology, epigraphy and history of art that were presented at the symposium. These domains, an integral part of classical studies, have generally been considered as distinct areas of research, however nobody can deny their mutual interdependence. The title of this volume 'Whispering of Inscriptions' is borrowed from one of Karashima's publications. Karashima, who himself was convinced of 'the importance of epigraphy in the task of historical reconstruction, ' had 'noticed a defect in past studies in the field of socio-economic history, due to the arbitrary use of epigraphic evidence.'3 Karashima was of the view that historians should avoid arbitrary judgements and concluded his essay by saying: 'In sum, scholars of ancient and medieval South Indian history should be acquainted with inscriptions and listen honestly to their whisperings.' [...] This volume witnesses this very challenge of contextualization of epigraphic and iconographic data. It contains a variety of contributions demonstrating the richness and diversity of contemporary research on South Indian temple inscriptions and copper plate charts as well as on art and archæology. During the last decade, the field of South Indian epigraphy and archæology has come up with important findings which has brought in unprecedented data shedding new light in the area of historical studies, particularly of South India. These essays attempt to highlight some of these discoveries and to update the epigraphical and archæological resource materials. They are intended to stimulate discussion and analysis in a multidisciplinary perspective, through new and divergent theoretical and methodological conceptions, and to broaden our perception of the early and mediæval South Indian societies. Each one is original in its approach to the South Indian inscriptions, monuments and images and relates to a particular domain of South Indian history.

Buddhism and Buddhist Literature in Early Indian Epigraphy by Kanai Lal Hazra Pdf

Description: This is the first detailed authentic record of Buddhism as depicted in the inscriptions of ancient India. In this scholarly work the author discusses the significance of inscriptions and shows how they, as primary source material, play a major role in providing the factual underpinnings of the social, political, religious, cultural, and literary history of early India. This work, based both on the author's original study of the inscriptions of the period and the extant literature on the subject, provides an in-depth account, on the one hand, of the richness and variety of the information provided by them and; on the other, a description of the development of Buddhism in Asoka's time. By skilfully weaving together all the available information, the author is able to paint a vivid portrait of Asoka, the great Mauryan ruler, and his munificent patronage of and active steps in furthering the Buddhist faith. He shows too that following the Second Buddhist Council the Buddhist world saw a schism in the Buddhist Samgha and the formation of two major sects: the Sthaviravada or the Hinayana, on the one hand, and the Theravada or the Mahasamghika, on the other, and that from these about eighteen sub-sects were born. Drawing upon some hitherto untapped inscriptional sources, this study shows how these sub-sects came into existence, their central tenets and doctrines, and their development under the patronage of the rulers of the time who played an extremely active role in their growth and development. This work is thus a valuable addition to the earlier literature on the subject, widening and deepening its ambit, and should prove of great value to historians and research scholars, and other readers interested in the development of Buddhism in its formative years. Contents Preface 1. Importance of the Study of Inscriptions as Sources for Social, Political, Religious, Geographical, Linguistic, and Literary Studies 2. Inscriptions of the Pre-Mauryan Period 3. Asoka, the Mauryan Ruler 4. Studies on the Principal Buddhist Sects, their Religion and Literature Summary
