Investigation of Grey Cast Iron Water Mains to Develop a Methodology for Estimating Service Life by Balvant Rajani,AWWA Research Foundation Pdf

The principal objective of this research project was to develop a methodology that would assist water distribution engineers estimating the optimum time to replace grey cast iron water mains. The methodology should integrate information on corrosion-induced pit dimensions, effective pipe wall thickness, residual strength of grey cast iron, corrosion rates and the mechanical behavior of metallic water mains. Secondary objectives within the project were: to determine the most effective and practical approaches to measure the residual strength of grey cast iron pipe; to determine whether current or near-term nondestructive testing technology could be used to produce the necessary information on corrosion put dimensions; and to expand the current state of knowledge with respect to the mechanical behaviour of grey cast iron water mains.

Workshop on Condition Assessment Inspection Devices for Water Transmission Mains by K. Lillie,Chris Reed,M. Rodgers,S. Daniels,David Smart Pdf

Many water utilities have only a limited knowledge of the structural condition of their underground assests. In order to maintain optimum serviceability, it is increasingly important that utilities gain a better understanding of the current condition and performance of these buried assets. Regular inspection and condition assessment of pipelines can greatly assist utilities with developing robust and cost-effective operational maintenance programs, which will optimize capital expenditure whilst minimizing risk. The aim of the project was to conduct a state-of-the-art literature review of non-interruptive condition assessment inspection devices for large diameter transmission mains (greater than 12 inches). In addition, an expert panel workshop was to be held to review business needs and drivers, the performance of existing technologies, and future underground asset condition assessment research needs. Review of the Bureau of Reclamation's Corrosion Prevention Standards for Ductile Iron Pipe by National Research Council,Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences,National Materials Advisory Board,Committee on the Review of the Bureau of Reclamation's Corrosion Prevention Standards for Ductile Iron Pipe Pdf

Ductile iron pipe (DIP) was introduced about 50 years ago as a more economical and better-performing product for water transmission and distribution. As with iron or steel pipes, DIP is subject to corrosion, the rate of which depends on the environment in which the pipe is placed. Corrosion mitigation protocols are employed to slow the corrosion process to an acceptable rate for the application. When to use corrosion mitigation systems, and which system, depends on the corrosivity of the soils in which the pipeline is buried. The Bureau of Reclamation's specification for DIP in highly corrosive soil has been contested by some as an overly stringent requirement, necessitating the pipe to be modified from its as-manufactured state and thereby adding unnecessary cost to a pipeline system. This book evaluates the specifications in question and presents findings and recommendations. Specifically, the authoring committee answers the following questions: Does polyethylene encasement with cathodic protection work on ductile iron pipe installed in highly corrosive soils? Will polyethylene encasement and cathodic protection reliably provide a minimum service life of 50 years? What possible alternative corrosion mitigation methods for DIP would provide a service life of 50 years?
