Is it Okay to Call God "mother" by Paul R. Smith Pdf

"This book is a "tour de force." It is simply magnificent" witty, scholarly, profoundly persuasive, blunt, prophetic, and convicting this slow-to-believe disciple all over the place." " Brennan Manning, Author of "The Ragamuffin Gospel" "I'm not sure what to make of it all, but Paul Smith gives the best arguments I have ever come across for calling God Mother. For anyone struggling with how far we should go in using inclusive language, this is "must" reading. " Tony Campolo, Eastern College "With tender power and wit, Paul Smith challenges the church to biblical fidelity and justice in its worship language. How encouraging it is to hear an evangelical male voice affirm the necessity of feminine images of God! This outstanding book so clearly and convincingly demonstrates the biblical imperative for inclusive God-language that the Christian community can no longer ignore it." " Jann Aldredge-Clanton, Ph.D., Chaplain, Baylor University Medical Center, Author of "God and Gender" and "God: A Word for Girls and Boys"

The Return of Mother God by Tony Scazzero Pdf

Most people become upset and even angry when it’s suggested that the God they know as Lord and Father might also be called God the Mother. Yet a society that reveres the feminine creates beauty, love, and equality. More importantly, the return of Mother God is needed as conferring with Her will improve our thinking to better handle the challenges of life. The future prosperity of all countries would be ensured if men and women equally shared tasks working side by side. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that humanity will benefit from a kinder gender-balanced divinity. Since God is the male/female parent of all mankind, until the Divine Mother is welcome back into our hearts, humanity cannot fulfil their potential. Mother God brings the highest awareness with limitless nurturing.

She Lives! by Rev. Jann Aldredge-Clanton, PhD Pdf

Meet the ministers and laypeople driving foundational Christian theological change and restoring awareness of the sacred value of women and girls. “The Bible teaches that we are made in the image and likeness of God; therefore, I must believe that there is a male and female expression of God…. Claim your divinity and walk in it every day, because you are fearfully and wonderfully made.” —Rev. Dr. Susan Newman, “Claiming Our Divinity” In a world filled with injustice and violence, we long for a new sacred symbolism to inspire transformation. Our yearning includes a widespread hunger for visions of the Female Divine in church life and worship to restore gender-balance and finally achieve just, equal and inclusive faith communities. This collection of engrossing narratives of women and men trying to change the institutional church—and society—illuminates how reclaiming multicultural female images of God extends beyond the sanctuary and into the community. Whether you’re searching for your own place in the church or you want to explore this growing movement, these fascinating pioneers invite you to join the adventure of creating rituals that include Her, affirming the sacred value of all people and all creation.

Changing Church by Jann Aldredge-Clanton Pdf

Through the fascinating stories of pioneering ministers, this book reveals a unique picture of progressive changes occurring in the Christian tradition. Meeting challenges and overcoming obstacles, these twelve diverse ministers are changing the church as they take prophetic stands on gender, race, interfaith cooperation, ecology, sexual orientation, economic opportunity, and other social justice issues. Believing in the power of sacred symbolism to shape social reality and to provide a foundation for justice and freedom for all people, these ministers lead worship with inclusive language and imagery for humanity and divinity. They include multicultural female and male images of the Divine. Their stories affirm the connection between this expansive theology and an ethic of justice and equality in human relationships. In working from within to change the church, these ministers have risked censure by denominational authorities, loss of opportunities for promotion to larger congregations or to prestigious denominational positions, and even loss of their jobs. They have found creative ways to balance advocating for change and working to support the church, using their positions as ordained clergy to bring liberating change to the church and the wider culture.

Evangelical Feminism? by Wayne Grudem Pdf

By critically examining the writings of egalitarians, Grudem shows that, while egalitarian leaders claim to be subject to Scripture in their thinking, what is increasingly evident in their actual scholarship and practice is an effective rejection of the authority of Scripture. Egalitarianism is heading toward an Adam who is neither male nor female, a Jesus whose manhood is not important, and a God who is both Father and Mother, and then maybe only Mother. The common denominator in all of this is a persistent undermining of the authority of Scripture in our lives. Grudem's conclusion is that we must choose either evangelical feminism or biblical truth. We can't have it both ways!

God Is More Than A Good Idea by Michael Alex McDonald Pdf

In addition to being an author, Michael McDonald is an ordained minister and a licensed professional counselor in private practice with his wife and partner Rebecca. Besides counseling people who have both mental health and substance abuse problems, Michael and Rebecca present creative Christian programs using magical illusions, clowning, and ventriloquism. In God Is More Than a Good Idea, Michael describes how to allow God to be more than a rational belief in your life. “I’m excited about the book,” he says, “because Jesus proved by his every word and action that he was God in the flesh. He simply did everything right. What was his reward for loving us? We tortured and killed him. What was his response to our hatred? He prayed from the cross, “Father, forgive them because they don’t know what they are doing.” I don’t know about you, but that’s the kind of God I want to know.” The book covers a lot of ground with Michael sharing many of his own personal experiences as he talks about how you can become God’s friend. “What’s the point,” he asks, “if God is only a good idea? What good is a God who isn’t there and doesn’t care? The good news is that God came to planet Earth to help us find love and peace in a world filled with trouble.

Calm and Quiet My Soul by Alyssa Lynn Bell Pdf

Self-care and soul care are trending topics in Christian leadership circles because ministry leaders know they cannot care for their people unless they care for themselves. Pastors who are mothers know this too, and yet it can feel like just one more task to manage among the many they carry on their schedules and in their hearts. The biblical truth is that spiritual rest is a gift from God, not an achievement, a refreshing reminder for women who hold the dual roles of mom and minister. This book invites women leading in these spaces to remember that the God of the Old and New Testaments, the one who pours out replenishment for weary hearts, is a God who is Mother as well as Father, and mothers them with tenderness and strength. Starting here, in the arms of a mothering God who whispers “beloved,” changes the tone of spiritual care for her from a chore to an oasis of replenishment that grounds her in her identity in Christ as a daughter of Creator God.

Not Only a Father by Tim Bulkeley Pdf

The God of the Bible is not a member of any class of comparable beings. Beyond and other than all gods and every creature, God is not gendered. However, Christian language for God and the pictures we use to help us talk about God are predominantly male. Among the pictures one of the most often used and appreciated is 'father'. Yet God (unlike many of the gods of the ancient world) is not only a father. The Bible and the early Christian theologians used motherly as well as fatherly language and pictures to speak of God. In this way at least their image of God was richer and deeper than ours! This book encourages readers to appropriate this wider range of pictures of what God is like, and to learn again to relate to a God who is beyond all imagining and closer than life itself. This God is not only a father!

Missional Motherhood by Gloria Furman Pdf

There's no such thing as “just” a mom. Despite the routine tasks and mundane to-do lists, motherhood is anything but insignificant. God has designed motherhood as part of his greater plan to draw people to himself—instilling all women, whether called to traditional mothering or not, with an eternal purpose in nurturing others. In this book, Gloria Furman searches the Scriptures for the mission of God in motherhood. She opens our eyes to God's life-giving promises—promises intended to empower each and every woman as she makes disciples in her home, in her neighborhood, and around the world.

Advent in Narnia by Heidi Haverkamp Pdf

"Walking into Advent can be like walking through the wardrobe." With its enchanting themes of snow and cold, light and darkness, meals and gifts, temptation and sin, forgiveness and hope—and even an appearance by Father Christmas—C. S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe fits naturally into the Advent season. As the reader seeks a storied king and anticipates the glorious coming of Christmas, these twenty-eight devotions alternate between Scripture and passages from the novel to prompt meditation on Advent themes. Each devotion also includes questions for reflection. The book also provides several resources for churches, including four sessions for small group discussion and ideas for creating a "Narnia Night" for families. Readers will ultimately come to know God better while journeying through Narnia.

Women and the Gender of God by Amy Peeler Pdf

A robust theological argument against the assumption that God is male. God values women. While many Christians would readily affirm this truth, the widely held assumption that the Bible depicts a male God persists—as it has for centuries. This misperception of Christianity not only perniciously implies that men deserve an elevated place over women but also compromises the glory of God by making God appear to be part of creation, subject to it and its categories, rather than in transcendence of it. Through a deep reading of the incarnation narratives of the New Testament and other relevant scriptural texts, Amy Peeler shows how the Bible depicts a God beyond gender and a savior who, while embodied as a man, is the unification in one person of the image of God that resides in both male and female. Peeler begins with a study of Mary and her response to the annunciation, through which it becomes clear that God empowers women and honors their agency. Then Peeler describes from a theological standpoint how the virgin birth of Jesus—the second Adam—reverses the gendered division enacted in the garden of Eden. While acknowledging the significance of the Bible’s frequent use of “Father” language to represent God as a caring parent, Peeler goes beneath the surface of this metaphor to show how God is never sexualized by biblical writers or described as being physically involved in procreation—making the concept of a masculine God dubious, at best. From these doctrinal centers of Christianity, Peeler leads the way in reasserting the value of women in the church and prophetically speaking out against the destructive idolatry of masculinity.

Our Divine Parent by Joshua Joel Spoelstra Pdf

Our Divine Parent traces the metaphorical theme of God's burgeoning family that spans the entire Bible. The family of God is a place of being, belonging, and becoming; and relationship with the Triune God as Divine Parent is characteristic of value and dignity, provision and protection, transformation and maturation, purpose and calling. Not merely a series of events relegated to the past, the family of God is an ongoing, present phenomenon--a salvation-relationship into which God invites all peoples to be adopted, redeemed children of God.
