Isan Son-in-Law is a memoir of the author's developing relationship with his father-in-law and with his family which has its roots in a small town in Isan, where the cultures of Thailand and Laos mix. We get to know some of the people and places he came to know and love in Thailand and how he and his wife and their two children began to establish a life there and later in Laos, before eventually moving to England.Isan Son-in-Law combines self-deprecating humour, cultural insight and colourful characters such as Mr Joonchit, the benevolent con-man, and Mac, the U.S. master-sergeant. Normal and Abnormal Behavior in Chinese Culture by A. Kleinman,T.Y. Lin Pdf
Our purpose in assembling the papers in this collection is to introduce readers to studies of normal and abnormal behavior in Chinese culture. We want to offer a sense o/what psychiatrists and social scientists are doing to advance our under standing of this subject, including what fmdings are being made, what questions researched, what conundrums worried over. Since our fund of knowledge is obviously incomplete, we want our readers to be aware of the limits to what we know and to our acquisition of new knowledge. Although the subject is too vast and uncharted to support a comprehensive synthesis, in a few areas - e. g. , psychiatric epidemiology - enough is known for us to be able to present major reviews. The chapters themselves cover a variety of themes that we regard as both intrinsically interesting and deserving of more systematic evaluation. Many of the issues they address we believe to be valid concerns for comparative cross cultural studies. No attempt is made to artificially integrate these chapters, since the editors wish to highlight their distinctive interpretive frameworks as evidence of the rich variety of approaches that scholars take to this subject. 'We see this volume as a modest and self-consciously limited exploration. Here are some accounts and interpretations (but by no means all) of normal and ab normal behavior in the context of Chinese culture that we believe fashion a more discriminating understanding of at least a few important aspects of that subject.
In-Law Relationships by Geoffrey L. Greif,Michael E. Woolley Pdf
"In-law relationships are multi-generational, multi-layered, and, like a kaleidoscope, a shifting amalgam of emotional colors. They are exceptionally important and, often, extremely complicated. They can be joyous and comforting and they can be disappointing and tension-filled. They can serve as a model for how to stay connected across generations for the well-being of grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, and as a bellwether for what to avoid. In this book, the authors describe the struggles as well as the triumphs that people encounter with their in-laws from the perspectives of both generations and suggest ways to improve the relationships"--

When India and Pakistan held nuclear tests in 1998, they restarted the clock on an intense competition that had begun with Partition. Nuclear weapons restored strategic parity, erasing the advantage of India's much larger military. But the shield offered by nuclear weapons also encouraged a reckless reliance by Pakistan on militant proxies even as jihadis spun out of control within and beyond its borders. In the years that followed, Pakistan would lose decisively to India, sacrificing its own domestic stability in a failed attempt to assert its claim to Kashmir and influence events in Afghanistan.Defeat is an Orphan tracks the defining episodes in the relationship between India and Pakistan from 1998, from bitter conflict in the mountains to military confrontation in the plains, from the hijacking of an Indian airliner to the Mumbai attacks. It is a frank history of an enduringly bitter relationship, set against the background of Islamist militancy in Pakistan and India's economic leap forward.

Disease Is an Expiation of the Sins by Dr. Mira Bajirova Pdf
Disease is an expiation of the sins. Every sin is a disobedience to God. The sins involve the evil jinn (demons). When a person commits the sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents, asks for the forgiveness, gives up with the sins, restores the people’s rights and honor, who were wronged, and follows the Qur’an and Sunnah, Almighty Allah will purify his heart. But, if a person continues with the sins, his heart will become black and he will be doomed. “... Indeed, there is in the body a piece of flesh which if it is sound then the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt then the whole body is corrupt. It is the heart.” (Bukhari) “Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Qur’an, Ar-R’ad 13:28) Sins remove God’s blessings: life, health, fertility, wealth, provisions, knowledge, memory... Refraining from the sins is more important than performing good deeds. “Whatever is good is from Allah, while evil and sin are from ourselves and satan” (Fatwas of Ibn Baz) The only one God, Allah, the Creator of the heavens and earth and everything between, seen and unseen, sent the Noble Qur’an and His last messenger to all mankind, as a healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy, and warning about the day of judgment and hellfire. “No calamity has descended except by disobedience, and no calamity is repelled except by repentance.” (Ali Ibn Abi Talib) “Know, for certain, that when you break no one will heal you except you.” (Ibn Al-Qayyim) More than 90% of the diseases are caused by the evil jinn, but doctors have no knowledge. Healthcare needs serious reform as went astray, instead of healing, it contributes to the progression of the disease and death, as it excites the hidden evil jinn and excited jinn spread more the disease. Satan can be cast out only by Ruqya and Negative Ions; both in the Noble Qur’an. The Ultimate Cure from all diseases is with Almighty God: Ruqya, Negative Ions and Prophetic Medicine. “Whoever abandons the Qur’an would abandon treating sickness and seeking healing through it.” (Ibn Al-Qayyim).

Conversion, Identity, and Power by A. Sue Russell Pdf
The introduction of Christianity into traditional societies has been the subject of numerous studies. Few of these studies, however, have adequately examined the way that this introduction affects power relationships in a community. In this, the third volume in the American Society of Missiology's dissertation series, A. Sue Russell attempts to advance the discourse on Christianity and social change by showing how a new social institution, the local church, both influences and is influenced by existing sociocultural power relationships. Building on her extensive research into the Tagal Murut, Dr. Russell clearly demonstrates that the introduction of Christianity created a dynamic that produced new social relations and power structures in Tagal society. With its unique insights into this crucial dynamic, Conversion, Identity, and Power stands as an important contribution to the sociological and missiological literature exploring the impact of Christianity on traditional societies.
