Island Girl by Jackie Muise Pdf

The life story of Mary Elizabeth LeBlanc in Jackie Muise's Island Girl is compelling and moving, not because she was highly unusual, but because she experienced, suffered, survived, and triumphed over challenges commonly faced by ordinary people during her era. She did so with inspiring fortitude and grace. Orphaned at an early age on PEI, she lives first with lightkeepers at Souris East Lighthouse, then with a St. Georges farming couple, Dolph and Jeannette Gallant, who become her beloved lifelong parents. With wartime, Mary is transplanted to Nova Scotia, where Dolph works in the Pictou shipyards building cargo ships, and where she marries Pictou native Fred Leblanc, who becomes a soldier. Afflicted and critically ill with tuberculosis, Mary dwells at length and gives birth in the Kentville sanitorium. Prevailing, she devotes herself to the roles, sometimes draining, often fulfilling, of a military wife and mother. During postings in Germany and New Brunswick, she copes with and finally confronts her husband's alcoholism, while nurturing children through their struggles and victories. When we arrive at the end of Mary's long life and story, we deeply admire and miss her as if she were our own cherished and extraordinary relative. We agree with the Chronicles of Narnia author C.S. Lewis that "There are no ordinary people."

Island Girls by Nancy Thayer Pdf

NATIONAL BESTSELLER Nancy Thayer returns to her beloved Nantucket in a highly emotional, wholly entertaining tale of three sisters forced to confront the past over one event-filled summer on the island. Charming ladies’ man Rory Randall dies with one last trick up his sleeve: His will includes a calculating clause mandating a summer-long reunion for his daughters, all from different marriages—that is, if they hope to inherit his posh Nantucket house. Relations among the three sisters are sour thanks to long-festering jealousies, resentments, and misunderstandings. Arden, a successful television host in Boston, hasn’t been back to the island since her teenage years, when accusations of serious misbehavior led to her banishment. College professor Meg hopes to use her summer to finish a literary biography and avoid an amorous colleague. And secretive Jenny, an IT specialist, faces troubling questions about her identity while longing for her sisters’ acceptance. To their surprise, the three young women find their newfound sisterhood easier to trust than the men who show up to complicate their lives. And if that weren’t problematic enough, their mothers descend on the island. When yet another visitor drops by the house with shocking news, the past comes screaming back with a vengeance. Having all the women from his life under his seaside roof—and overseeing the subsequent drama of that perfect storm—Rory Randall might just be enjoying a hearty laugh from above. Nancy Thayer’s novel insightfully illustrates how the push and pull of family altercations make us whole. It’s how the Randall sisters come to forgive, and learn to open their hearts to love. Praise for Island Girls “Nancy Thayer is one of my favorite writers, and Island Girls is one of her best. The Randall sisters are like your own family members or your best friends: funny, smart and emotional, infuriating and good-hearted. Here is a book to be savored and passed on to the good women in your life.”—New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs “Full of emotion and just plain fun, this novel is delightful.”—Romance Reviews Today “In this touching summer read, forgiveness benefits both the person bestowing it and the recipient.”—Kirkus Reviews

Island Girl by June Byrd Bowen Pdf

I am not a writer but I am a story teller with a tale to tell. This novel is based, to some extent, on things that happened during my years on and around Sullivan s Island, South Carolina. This story is about a mother, her husband and three children who lived on Sullivan s island near Fort Moultrie during World War II and several decades after the war. It includes living through hurricanes, eating what the ocean had to offer, enjoying the beach and the friends and relatives who affected their lives. In the middle of all this is another story.....a love story between the mother and a soldier, whom she introduces to her family, even to her husband as a friend. The surprise ending brings to the reader an interesting conclusion. Remember this is not a true story but one that could have happened. I was born on Sullivan s Island over 80 years ago. I grew up there and lived through most of the events from which my imagination took over and built this story. Since being married almost 60 years to my husband Bill, the love of my life, we have traveled to all fi fty states, parts of Europe, South America, Canada and cruised all over the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. In addition to our traveling we enjoy duplicate bridge, reading, senior activities at our church and writing. Writing has always been my passion but this is my fi rst attempt at writing a novel. I just love what I ve done and have another in the back of my mind. We have three daughters and seven grandchildren and currently live in the clay hills of Chapin, South Carolina but I just cannot get the beach sand from between my toes.

Island Girl by Norma Joyce Dougherty Pdf

Everyone loves a good fairy tale and Island Girl: A Triumph of the Spirit, from author Norma Joyce Dougherty, fits the bill. Norma shares how in 1970, God led her, a poor, young farm girl from Prince Edward Island, Canada to live out a real-life fairy tale on the world stage. “I became a world traveler and overnight success as Miss Dominion of Canada and contestant in the Miss World, Miss Universe, Queen of the Pacific, and semi-finalist in Miss International. She found fame and fortune,” but adds, “I lost my home, my self, and a sense of belonging. It took many years to find ‘me’ again.” Women of every age will relate with her identity crisis—a crisis that is all too common in this post-modern era due to the bombardment of direct marketing campaigns designed to focus our goals on looking, acting, and being someone we're not. Norma Joyce recounts her story in a lively “fairy-tale” theme as she shares the long journey from a world where lies and deception prevail to one where the truth of Jesus Christ is her power source, her light, radiance, beauty, peace, joy and her triumph.

Island Girl by Patricia Distad Pdf

Island Girl starts with a bang when the entire family relocates. The momentum continues throughout in this fast-paced story that soon adds the mystery about a character who gets a tattoo that causes him to have frightening nightmares that dont let up. Settings play an important role in this novel. The contrast baetween Kansas and Hawaii are beautifully written. Distads considerable experience in Hawaii becomes part of the plot when she gives readers a glimpse into Hawaii through characters, names, customs and maps. The plot is well-crafted with well-rounded true life characters. Distad blends beautiful, descriptive prose with clear, crisp dialogue. She keeps the reader turning pages, never certain where she will lead them next. Joan Blacher, author of the Ardis Jensen mystery novels.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell Pdf

Far off the coast of California looms a harsh rock known as the island of San Nicholas. Dolphins flash in the blue waters around it, sea otter play in the vast kep beds, and sea elephants loll on the stony beaches. Here, in the early 1800s, according to history, an Indian girl spent eighteen years alone, and this beautifully written novel is her story. It is a romantic adventure filled with drama and heartache, for not only was mere subsistence on so desolate a spot a near miracle, but Karana had to contend with the ferocious pack of wild dogs that had killed her younger brother, constantly guard against the Aleutian sea otter hunters, and maintain a precarious food supply. More than this, it is an adventure of the spirit that will haunt the reader long after the book has been put down. Karana's quiet courage, her Indian self-reliance and acceptance of fate, transform what to many would have been a devastating ordeal into an uplifting experience. From loneliness and terror come strength and serenity in this Newbery Medal-winning classic.

The Girl and the Game by M. Ann Hall Pdf

In this new edition of her groundbreaking social history The Girl and the Game (2002), M. Ann Hall updates her lively narrative of how women resisted masculine hegemony in Canadian sport and, in turn, how their efforts were opposed and sometimes supported by men. The second edition of The Girl and the Game begins with an important new chapter on aboriginal women and their interaction with early sport and ends with a new chapter on how trends and issues facing contemporary women in Canadian sport have their origins in the past. Other new sections focus on gender and the residential school system, the promotion of women's track and field, the 1928 summer Olympics and the Matchless Six, and aboriginal sportswomen. As in the first edition, Hall introduces her audience to more obscure Canadian female athletes rather than focusing her discussion on household names. The introduction to the new edition has been updated to reflect the content changes in the narrative. To increase appeal to the course market, chapter titles are more descriptive, the text has been revised to include more subsections, and the 52 black and white images are placed throughout the text.
