Jack London's The Call of the Wild for Teachers by Anonim Pdf

Teachers have found The Call of the Wild--from the very earliest days of its publication in 1903--to be a novella rich in instructional possibilities in history, geography, and ethics as well as literature. In this resource book for teachers, Daniel Dyer provides an array of activities--traditional and nontraditional--to accommodate a wide range of students, teachers, schools and communities. Dyer’s instructional ideas will stimulate exploration of such subjects as California and Klondike history and geography; tranportation by rail, ferry, steamship, and dog teams; techniques of gold mining; breeds of dogs; and subarctic flora and fauna--as well as the novel’s great literary themes.

Jack London wrote this celebrated novel in 1903. It's considered one of his best stories and has become one of the world's most popular American classics. The call of the wild is the thrilling story of Buck, a domestic dog from California kidnapped and thrust into the harsh, physical world of the Yukon, a land of danger and ferocity, a land of wolves, blizzards, and treacherous frozen rivers that swallow up entire dog teams. Here is where Buck must learn to survive. He must become as wild and vicious as the wilderness that surrounds him ... or die!

Approaches to Teaching the Works of Jack London by Kenneth K. Brandt,Jeanne Campbell Reesman Pdf

A prolific and enduringly popular author--and an icon of American fiction--Jack London is a rewarding choice for inclusion in classrooms from middle school to graduate programs. London's biography and the role played by celebrity have garnered considerable attention, but the breadth of his personal experiences and political views and the many historical and cultural contexts that shaped his work are key to gaining a nuanced view of London's corpus of works, as this volume's wide-ranging perspectives and examples attest. The first section of this volume, "Materials," surveys the many resources available for teaching London, including editions of his works, sources for his photography, and audiovisual aids. In part 2, "Approaches," contributors recommend practices for teaching London's works through the lenses of socialism and class, race, gender, ecocriticism and animal studies, theories of evolution, legal theory, and regional history, both in frequently taught texts such as The Call of the Wild, "To Build a Fire," and Martin Eden and in his lesser-known works.

The Call of the Wild and Selected Stories by Jack London Pdf

The Call of the Wild is Now a Major Motion Picture Starring Harrison Ford! Out of the white wilderness, out of the Far North, Jack London, one of America’s most popular authors, drew the inspiration for his robust tales of perilous adventure and animal cunning. Swiftly paced and vividly written, the novel and five short stories included here capture the main theme of London’s work: the law of the club and the fang—man’s instinctive reversion to primitive behavior when pitted against the brute force of nature. Includes The Call of the Wild, Diable: A Dog, An Odyssey of the North, To the Man on the Trail, To Build a Fire, and Love of Life

A Daughter of the Snows by Jack London Pdf

A Daughter of the Snows (1902) is Jack London's first novel. Set in the Yukon, it tells the story of Frona Welse, "a Stanford graduate and physical Valkyrie" who takes to the trail after upsetting her wealthy father's community by her forthright manner and befriending the town's prostitute. She is also torn between love for two suitors: Gregory St Vincent, a local man who turns out to be cowardly and treacherous; and Vance Corliss, a Yale-trained mining engineer. The novel is noteworthy for its strong and self-reliant heroine, one of many who would people his fiction. Her name echoes that of his mother, Flora Wellman, though her inspiration has also been said to include London's friend Anna Strunsky. Modern commentators have criticized the novel for its approval of the main character's view that Anglo-Saxons are racially superior. The novel was commissioned by publisher S. S. McClure, who provided London a $125 a month stipend to write it.
