Jacob Riis's Camera by Alexis O'Neill Pdf

This revealing biography of a pioneering photojournalist and social reformer Jacob Riis shows how he brought to light one of the worst social justice issues plaguing New York City in the late 1800s--the tenement housing crisis--using newly invented flash photography. Jacob Riis was familiar with poverty. He did his best to combat it in his hometown of Ribe, Denmark, and he experienced it when he immigrated to the United States in 1870. Jobs for immigrants were hard to get and keep, and Jacob often found himself penniless, sleeping on the streets or in filthy homeless shelters. When he became a journalist, Jacob couldn't stop seeing the poverty in the city around him. He began to photograph overcrowded tenement buildings and their impoverished residents, using newly developed flash powder to illuminate the constantly dark rooms to expose the unacceptable conditions. His photographs inspired the people of New York to take action. Gary Kelley's detailed illustrations perfectly accompany Alexis O'Neill's engaging text in this STEAM title for young readers.

Rediscovering Jacob Riis by Bonnie Yochelson,Daniel Czitrom Pdf

Jacob Riis (1849-1914) was the author of How the Other Half Lives (1890). This study of his life and work includes excerpts from Riis s diary, chronicling romance, poverty, temptation, and, after many false starts, employment as a writer and reformer. In the second half, Yochelson describes how Riis used photography to shock and influence his readers. The authors describe Riis s intellectual education and discuss the influence of How the Other Half Lives on urban history. It shows that Riis argued for charity rather than social justice; but the fact that he understood what it was to be homeless did humanize Riis s work, and that work has continued to inspire reformers. Yochelson focuses on how Riis came to obtain his now famous images, how they were manipulated for publication, and their influence on the young field of photography."

Jacob A. Riis by Bonnie Yochelson Pdf

"Danish-born Jacob A. Riis (1849-1914) found success in America as a reporter for the New York Tribune, first documenting crime and later turning his eye to housing reform. As tenement living conditions became unbearable in the wake of massive immigration, Riis and his camera captured some of the earliest, most powerful images of American urban poverty"--Jacket.

The Kite that Bridged Two Nations by Alexis O'Neill Pdf

Homan Walsh loves to fly his kite. And when a contest is announced to see whose kite string can span Niagara Falls, Homan is set on winning, despite the cold and the wind—and even when his kite is lost and broken. Homan's determination is beautifully captured in this soaring, poetic picture book that features Terry Widener's stunning acrylic paintings. Both author and illustrator worked with experts on both sides of the falls to accurately present Homan Walsh's story. The book also includes an extensive author's note, timeline, bibliography, and further resources.

The Good Drone by Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick Pdf

How small-scale drones, satellites, kites, and balloons are used by social movements for the greater good. Drones are famous for doing bad things: weaponized, they implement remote-control war; used for surveillance, they threaten civil liberties and violate privacy. In The Good Drone, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick examines a different range of uses: the deployment of drones for the greater good. Choi-Fitzpatrick analyzes the way small-scale drones--as well as satellites, kites, and balloons--are used for a great many things, including documenting human rights abuses, estimating demonstration crowd size, supporting anti-poaching advocacy, and advancing climate change research. In fact, he finds, small drones are used disproportionately for good; nonviolent prosocial uses predominate.

Photography as Activism by Michelle Bogre Pdf

You want to look through the lens of your camera and change the world. You want to capture powerful moments in one click that will impact the minds of other people. Photographic images are one of the most popular tools used to advocate for social and environmental awareness. This can be as close to home as drug use, prostitution, or pollution or as far away as famine, war, and the plight of refugees and migrant workers. One well-known example of an activist photographer would be landscape photographer Ansel Adams, who trudged to Washington with stunning images of the American west to advocate protecting these areas. His images and testimony were instrumental in creating the National Park System and garnering specific protection for Yellowstone National Park. More recently Robert Glenn Ketchum's images of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge raised awareness of why this area should be protected. Nigel Barker's seal photographs advocates against seal clubbing. What is your cause and how can you use your camera to make the world a better place? This book provides a comprehensive theory of, and history of, photography as activism. It also includes interviews with contemporary photographers. It is a call to action for young photographers to become activists, a primer of sorts, with advice for how to work with NGOs and non-profits, how to work safely in conflict zones and with suggestions for distribution on websites, blogs, and interactive agencies.

The Efficient, Inventive (Often Annoying) Melvil Dewey by Alexis O'Neill Pdf

Who was Melvil Dewey? Learn how Dewey's love of organization and words drove him to develop and implement his Dewey Decimal system, leaving a significant and lasting impact in libraries across the country. When Melvil Dewey realized every library organized their books differently, he wondered if he could invent a system all libraries could use to organize them efficiently. A rat-a-tat speaker, Melvil was a persistent (and noisy) advocate for free public libraries. And while he made enemies along the way as he pushed for changes–like his battle to establish the first library school with women as students, through it all he was EFFICIENT, INVENTIVE, and often ANNOYING as he made big changes in the world of public libraries–changes still found in the libraries of today!

Jacob Riis. Social Activist or Muckraker? by Anonim Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen, language: English, abstract: In the following paper, the author examines the debate if Riis was a Social Activist, who wanted to enhance the New York slums in the late 19th century, or a Muckraker, who aspired to become famous at any price. The primary source of this debate will be Jacob Riis’ most famous work "How the Other Half Lives". Moreover, this debate will be developed in respect to both Riis’ biography and "How the Other Half Lives"‘content, its structure, its language and its style in general. Jacob August Riis "How the Other Half Lives - Studies among the Tenements of New York" which was first published in 1890 is an early work of photojournalism. It deals with the tenement and slum conditions in New York in the late 19th century. "How the Other Half Lives" is a documentation and not a fictional story. All 25 chapters report on occurrences which the author has researched and experienced. Jacob Riis uses numerous photographs, sketches and ground plans in each chapter to visualize his words to the reader. Some photographs are recorded by the author himself who makes use of new innovations. Riis’ usage of the flashlight was one of the newest and groundbreaking methods to take pictures at the end of the 19th century. He intensely experimented with flash and refined the work with his camera. Since Riis put a lot of time, active work and effort in both the photography and the text component, he was regarded as a Social Activist. Riis states that his publication of photojournalism is based on changing and fighting against the social injustice in New York by "providing for every man a clean and comfortable home." In opposition to that, Riis was also regarded as a Muckraker. A Muckraker looks "for information about people’s private lives that they do not wish to make public" (Oxford Dictionary) in order to scandalize. Since he indeed uncovered unknown details of the slums, the lives of the tenants and the power of the landlords, Riis could be labeled as a Muckraker who “scraped up [the covert filth of the society] with the muck-rake” (Roosevelt).
