Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore Pdf

An instant New York Times bestseller—from the award-winning author of the Graceling Realm series—about adventure, grief, storytelling, and finding yourself in a world of seemingly infinite choices. "A wild gift for readers who like books that take them to unexpected places."—Melissa Albert, author of The Hazel Wood Jane has lived a mostly ordinary life, raised by her recently deceased aunt Magnolia, whom she counted on to turn life into an adventure. Without Aunt Magnolia, Jane is lost. So she's easily swept away when a glamorous, capricious, and wealthy acquaintance from years ago asks Jane to accompany her to a gala at the extravagant island mansion called Tu Reviens. Jane remembers her aunt telling her: "If anyone ever invites to you to Tu Reviens, promise me that you'll go." What Jane doesn't know is that the house will offer her five choices that could ultimately determine the course of her life. One choice leads Jane into a heist mystery. Another takes her into a spy thriller. She finds herself in a gothic horror story, a space opera, and an extraordinary fantasy realm. She might fall in love, she might lose her life, she might come face-to-face with herself. Every choice comes with a price. But together, all the choices will lead her to the truth. One house. Five choices. Limitless possibilities. Read Jane, Unlimited and remember why The New York Times has raved, "Some authors can tell a good story; some can write well. Cashore is one of the rare novelists who do both."

Evaluating Emotions by Eva-Maria Düringer Pdf

How are emotions related to values? This book argues against a perceptual theory of emotions, which sees emotions as perception-like states that help us gain evaluative knowledge, and argues for a caring-based theory of emotions, which sees emotions as felt desires or desire satisfactions, both of which arise out of caring about something.

This ground-breaking volume, the effort of fifteen leading American philosophers of religion, represents a new movement in Anglo-American philosophical theology; it introduces important topics and fresh approaches to philosophical theology by centering its discussion on the relationship between God and the created universe.

The Munro Family from Longlac by Kenneth Munro Pdf

This is the story of the Munro family of Longlac. George, Jane and I spent our salad days in this picturesque little Northwestern Ontario community based on the pulp industry nestled between two First Nations’ reserves. It is the story of a largely agricultural family whose members had deep roots in the soil of Saskatchewan and Ontario and whose offspring struggled throughout the twentieth century to become well-educated middle class urban family members. Although my grandparents and parents brought family characteristics to bear on the development of me and my siblings, this little community provided an environment in our early years which left an indelible influence on all three of our lives. Longlac was a mirror of the larger Canadian environment which sometimes exhibited prejudice and stifled creativity, but it also exhibited tolerance and allowed freedom for personal growth. Education was the passport to employment in urban Canada and to a full participation in Canadian life. Our parents saw that my siblings and I knew of our origins in both western and eastern Canada and gave us every opportunity to become familiar with both the English and French languages and cultures. Our eye on the world was the CBC whose low power relay transmitter broadcast English-language programs during the day. This environment was our springboard to success in our various professions and provided the following generations with an ability to contribute to Canada as hard-working, caring members of a middle-class family.

Relativism and Monadic Truth by Herman Cappelen,John Hawthorne Pdf

Relativism has dominated many intellectual circles, past and present, but the twentieth century saw it banished to the fringes of mainstream analytic philosophy. Of late, however, it is making something of a comeback within that loosely configured tradition, a comeback that attempts to capitalize on some important ideas in foundational semantics. Relativism and Monadic Truth aims not merely to combat analytic relativism but also to combat the foundational ideas in semantics that led to its revival. Doing so requires a proper understanding of the significance of possible worlds semantics, an examination of the relation between truth and the flow of time, an account of putatively relevant data from attitude and speech act reporting, and a careful treatment of various operators. Throughout, Herman Cappelen and John Hawthorne contrast relativism with a view according to which the contents of thought and talk are propositions that instantiate the fundamental monadic properties of truth simpliciter and falsity simpliciter. Such propositions, they argue, are the semantic values of sentences (relative to context), the objects of illocutionary acts, and, unsurprisingly, the objects of propositional attitudes.

Modality by Paul Portner Pdf

This is a book about semantic theories of modality. Its main goal is to explain and evaluate important contemporary theories within linguistics and to discuss a wide range of linguistic phenomena from the perspective of these theories. The introduction describes the variety of grammatical phenomena associated with modality, explaining why modal verbs, adjectives, and adverbs represent the core phenomena. Chapters are then devoted to the possible worlds semantics for modality developed in modal logic; current theories of modal semantics within linguistics; and the most important empirical areas of research. The author concludes by discussing the relation between modality and other topics, especially tense, aspect, mood, and discourse meaning. Paul Portner's accessible guide to this key area of current research will be welcomed by students of linguistics at graduate level and above, as well as by researchers in philosophy, computational science, and related fields.

Cosmopolitan Culture and Consumerism in Chick Lit by Caroline J. Smith Pdf

Cosmopolitan Culture and Consumerism in Chick Lit focuses on the literary phenomenon popularly known as chick lit, and the way in which this genre interfaces with magazines, self-help books, romantic comedies, and domestic-advice publications. This recent trend in women’s popular fiction, which began in 1996 with the publication of British author Helen Fielding’s novel Bridget Jones’s Diary, uses first person narration to chronicle the romantic tribulations of its young, single, white, heterosexual, urban heroines. Critics of the genre have failed to fully appreciate chick lit’s complicated representations of women as both readers and consumers. In this study, Smith argues that chick lit questions the "consume and achieve promise" offered by advice manuals marketed toward women, subverting the consumer industry to which it is so closely linked and challenging cultural expectations of women as consumers, readers, and writers, and of popular fiction itself.
