Japanese Fairy Tales - Second Series by Teresa Williston Pdf

From the FOREWORD. A STORY from the Land of Far Away! What mystery, what charm it holds for childhood! With quickened breath, with parted lips and shining eyes, the little voyager sets foot on the wonderful shore of Story Land. Pulsating with interest, he greets the hero of that land, follows his adventures, and shares his struggles; learns the universal language of sympathy by sharing in the hopes and fears, the toil and the laughter of that other one, his brother now through the magic bonds of the story. I have endeavored in this book, both through the illustrations and the "atmosphere" of the stories themselves, to bring the wee brothers from overseas as vividly as possible before the little folk of America. I hope the children who read these tales will see the beauty and charm of this life through the glamour of romance and the haze of tradition with which generations of story-loving Japanese have enwrapped it. In collecting these stories I am greatly indebted to Mr. Katayama of Tokyo, and in planning the art work am under obligations to Miss Bertha Philpott of the Art Institute of Chicago for many helpful suggestions. Mr. Sanchi Ogawa, who illustrated the first series of Japanese Fairy Tales, has furnished the illustrations for this volume with the exception of the frontispiece and the cover design, which are by Mr. Kyohei Inukai. Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki Pdf

First published in 1908, this is a book of "beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan" that were collected, translated and retold by the author, Yei Theodora Ozaki, who states: ..".in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West." In part, the project was the result of a suggestion made by her friend Andrew Lang, another collector of fairy stories, who printed his stories in the many Colored Fairy Books. This edition includes all 63 original illustrations from printed book format.

Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki Pdf

This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West. Japanese Fairy Tales (Illustrated) by Yei Theodora Ozaki Pdf

Japanese Fairy Tales signifies a certain set of well-known classic tales, with a vague distinction of whether they fit the rigorous definition of folktale or not. The admixed imposters are literate written pieces, dating back to the Muromachi period (14th-16th centuries) or even earlier times in the Middle Ages. These would not normally qualify as "folktales" (i.e., pieces collected from oral tradition among the populace). In a more stringent sense, "Japanese folktales" refer to orally transmitted folk narrative. Systematic collection of specimens was pioneered by folklorist Kunio Yanagita. Yanagita disliked the word minwa, a coined term directly translated from "folktale" (Yanagita stated that the term was not familiar to actual old folk he collected folktales from, and was not willing to "go along" with the conventions of other countries). He therefore proposed the use of the term mukashibanashi ("tales of long ago"?) to apply to all creative types of folktales (i.e., those that are not "legendary" types which are more of a reportage).

Japanese Fairy Book by Anonim Pdf

This compilation of twenty-one favorite fairy tales introduces the rich world of Japanese fantasy, a world of ghouls, goblins, and ogres; sea serpents and sea kings; kindly animals and magic birds; demons and dragons; princes and princesses. In "My Lord Bag of Rice" goldfish dancers and carp musicians delight the brave warrior Hidesato; in "The Mirror of Matsuyama" a lonely daughter endures her fate with the help of a "shining disc" given by her departed mother; "The Jellyfish and the Monkey" explains how that sea creature lost its bones; and the hero of "Momotaro," a tale familiar to every child in Japan, is born from a peach that washes up on a riverbank. Settings and characters vary from tale to tale but the effect of each story in this volume is the same—to transport the reader, young or old, to mysterious shores, magical kingdoms, and mythical lands. The Japanese Fairy Book is a wondrous introduction to Japan's rich fantasy tradition.

The Fairy Tale and Anime by Dani Cavallaro Pdf

Over the last few decades, anime has consistently come into fruitful contact with themes, images and symbols associated with the fairy tale tradition. This critical text focuses on the ways in which fundamental principles of the fairy tale tradition are deployed, and hence come to manifest themselves narratively and cinematographically, in anime. Topics covered include modes of storytelling, aesthetics, as well as dramatic, ethical, psychological and social considerations. Of particular interest is the way in which allegorical commentaries on cultural and historical issues are illustrated in anime.

JAPANESE FAIRY TALES - 38 Japanese Fairy Tales and Legends by Various Pdf

With NEW, REVAMPED COVER plus NEW COLOUR IMAGES! These 38 Japanese children’s stories and legends have been collected from many sources. Some of them have been selected from the Ko-ji-ki, or Record of Ancient Matters, which contains the mythology of Japan. Herein you will find stories like Green Willow, The Flute, The Sea King And The Magic Jewels, The Peony lantern, The Robe of Feathers, The Bell Of Dōjōji, The Moon Maiden, The Cold Lady, A Legend Of Kwannon, The Singing Bird of Heaven; and many, many more all with a uniquely Japanese flavour made more appealing by Warwick Goble’s many exquisite illustrations. Many were told from memory, being relics of childish days, originally heard from the lips of a school-fellow or a nurse. Certain of them, again, form favourite subjects which have been represented upon the Japanese stage and are still short and entertaining enough to hold a child’s attention without them becoming bored. A few of the stories, now gathered together, have been translated into English and have previously appeared in one form or another yet others will probably be new to the 21st C. Western reader. 10% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.
