John La Farge and the Recovery of the Sacred by Jeffery W. Howe Pdf

"John La Farge and the Recovery of the Sacred" accompanies an exhibition of the same name that will open at the McMullen Museum of Art at Boston College in September 2015. This exhibition examines for the first time from an interdisciplinary perspective La Farge s lifelong efforts to visualize the sacred. Most outstandingly shown in his stained glass and ecclesiastical paintings, the exhibition demonstrates how this quest is manifest equally in the artist s representations of nature and still life and in his stunningly imaginative book illustrations. The exhibition will also explore how his trip to Japan and the South Seas in 1886 reinforced the multicultural range of La Farge s spiritual inquiry. Negotiating the boundaries between realism and symbolism, La Farge is always innovative and intriguing. Scholars and curators Jeffery Howe, David Cave, Cecelia Levin, James O Toole, David Quigley, Virginia Raguin, and Roberto Rosause the stained glass and paintings in the exhibition to inform their original research on this seminal American artist. Late Victorian Orientalism by Eleonora Sasso Pdf

Late Victorian Orientalism is a work of scholarly research pushing forward disciplines into new areas of enquiry. This collection of essays tries to redefine the task of interpreting the East in the nineteenth century taking as a starting point Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) in order to investigate the visual, fantasised, and imperialist representations of the East as well as the most exemplary translations of Oriental texts. The Victorians envisioned the East in many different modes or Orientalisms since as Said suggested ‘[t]here were, perhaps, as many Orientalisms as Orientalists’. By combining together Western and Oriental modes of art, this study is not only aimed at filling a gap in Victorian and Oriental studies but also at broadening the audiences it is intended for.

American Watercolor in the Age of Homer and Sargent by Kathleen A. Foster,Philadelphia Museum of Art Pdf

The fascinating story of the transformation of American watercolor practice between 1866 and 1925 The formation of the American Watercolor Society in 1866 by a small, dedicated group of painters transformed the perception of what had long been considered a marginal medium. Artists of all ages, styles, and backgrounds took up watercolor in the 1870s, inspiring younger generations of impressionists and modernists. By the 1920s many would claim it as "the American medium." This engaging and comprehensive book tells the definitive story of the metamorphosis of American watercolor practice between 1866 and 1925, identifying the artist constituencies and social forces that drove the new popularity of the medium. The major artists of the movement - Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, William Trost Richards, Thomas Moran, Thomas Eakins, Charles Prendergast, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, and many others - are represented with lavish color illustrations. The result is a fresh and beautiful look at watercolor's central place in American art and culture.

Holy Women, Holy Men by Church Publishing, Pdf

Fully revised and expanded, this new work is the first major revision of the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church in more than 40 years! It is the official revision of Lesser Feasts and Fasts and authorized by the 2009 General Convention. All commemorations in Lesser Feasts and Fasts have been retained, and many new ones added. Three scripture readings (instead of current two) are provided for all minor holy days. Additional new material includes a votive mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many more ecumenical commemorations, plus a proper for space exploration. For years the oft revised volume, Lesser Feasts and Fasts (LFF), has served parishes and individuals mark part of the holiness of each day by providing Scripture readings, a collect, a Eucharistic preface, and a narrative about those remembered on the church's calendar that day whose lives have witnessed to the grace of God. Holy Women, Holy Men (HWHM) is a major effort to revise, but also to expand and enrich LFF. Where LFF provided two readings (gospel and other New Testament) plus a psalm, HWHM adds an Old Testament citation. Where LFF was limited to few non-Anglicans in the post-reformation period (and few non-Episcopalians after 1789), HWHM dramatically broadens appreciation for other Christians and their traditions. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.

Jesuits in the North American Colonies and the United States by Catherine O'Donnell Pdf

From Eusebio Kino to Daniel Berrigan, and from colonial New England to contemporary Seattle, Jesuits have built and disrupted institutions in ways that have fundamentally shaped the Catholic Church and American society. As Catherine O’Donnell demonstrates, Jesuits in French, Spanish, and British colonies were both evangelists and agents of empire. John Carroll envisioned an American church integrated with Protestant neighbors during the early years of the republic; nineteenth-century Jesuits, many of them immigrants, rejected Carroll’s ethos and created a distinct Catholic infrastructure of schools, colleges, and allegiances. The twentieth century involved Jesuits first in American war efforts and papal critiques of modernity, and then (in accord with the leadership of John Courtney Murray and Pedro Arrupe) in a rethinking of their relationship to modernity, to other faiths, and to earthly injustice. O’Donnell’s narrative concludes with a brief discussion of Jesuits’ declining numbers, as well as their response to their slaveholding past and involvement in clerical sexual abuse.

Indian Man by D'Arcy McNickle Pdf

"From his first travels in southwestern Indian country as a Harvard undergraduate to his final visit to the Taos pueblo shortly before his death, Oliver La Farge was involved with American Indians and engaged in a dedicated struggle to improve their lot. What began for him as a 'pet charity'--membership on the board of directors of a citizens' organization to help the Indians--became an all-consuming interest. His lifelong devotion to the Indian cause drained much energy that might otherwise have gone into his writing, yet it enriched his talent profoundly and gave rise to his most successful books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Laughing Boy."--Book jacket.
