My Personal History of The British Interplanetary Society by Leslie Johnson Pdf
This is the story of the founding of the British Interplanetary Society Liverpool in 1933 before it relocated to London in 1937. It is the personal meticulous recollection of Leslie J Johnson who was the BIS’s First Hon. Secretary but later its treasurer, editor of the bulletin and the journal and a vice president. Published for the first time, this manuscript was written using a manual typewritten and rich first-hand source material consisting of thousands of handwritten letters. As the Hon. secretary, he was the first contact for many now familiar names, including a teenage Arthur C Clarke in 1933, and from Dr W Olaf Stapledon, a professor at Liverpool University, writers EF Russell, Walter H Gillings, Edward John Carnell, Stephen Smith, a rocket mail experimenter in India, Herr Will Ley, a rocket engineer from Germany. Many who joined the BIS were interested in reading and writing science fiction, including Johnson. One of his earliest stories, “Satellites of Death”, was published in 1938, two decades before the launch of Sputnik. The first passenger railway, military submarine and programable computer emerged in the Northwest of England for the first time. It was from this generation that gifted and visionary individuals emerged in pursuit of the idea and ideals of interplanetary space travel. Similar societies were founded around the world at about the same time but only the BIS continues to the present day contributing to British space policy and innovative ideas for spaceflight for communication satellites, human spaceflight and interstellar travel. As the BIS approaches its 90th year, it can celebrate some momentous achievements, including being a founding member in 1950 of the International Astronautical Federation which is now seen as the global premier body that binds the international space community.

Deep Space Probes by Gregory L. Matloff Pdf
The Space Age is nearly 50 years old but exploration of the outer planets and beyond has only just begun. Deep-Space Probes Second Edition draws on the latest research to explain why we should explore beyond the edge of the Solar System and how we can build highly sophisticated robot spacecraft to make the journey. Many technical problems remain to be solved, among them propulsion systems to permit far higher velocities, and technologies to build vehicles a fraction of the size of today’s spacecraft. Beyond the range of effective radio control, robot vehicles for exploring deep space will need to be intelligent, ‘thinking’ craft – able to make vital decisions entirely on their own. Gregory Matloff also looks at the possibility for human travel into interstellar space, and some of the immense problems that such journeys would entail. This second edition includes an entirely new chapter on holographic message plaques for future interstellar probes – a NASA-funded project.

Non-Rocket Space Launch and Flight by Alexander Bolonkin Pdf
In recent years scientists have investigated a series of new methods for non-rocket space launch, which promise to revolutionize space launches and flight. Particularly in the current political climate new, cheaper, and more ‘fuel efficient’ methods are being investigated. Such new methods include the gas tube method, cable accelerators, tether launch systems, space elevators, solar and magnetic sails, circle launcher space keepers and more. The author of Non-Rocket Space Launch and Flight brings a vast amount of experience to the topic, having worked as a engineer, designer, project director and researcher at key institutes including NASA and the US Air Force. Explores all the new non-rocket space launch methods, and compares them with each other and traditional rockets Investigates the unifying principles of the different systems and shows how to select the best design suited to the mission Author brings together technical and theoretical expertise from both industry and academia

Dynamics of Meteor Outbursts and Satellite Mitigation Strategies by Glenn E. Peterson Pdf
The potential threat posed by Leonid meteroids to orbiting spacecraft over the next several years calls for new dynamic mitigation strategies to assist the satellite community in reducing the danger to its vehicles. This book offers deliberate dynamic mitigation strategies to complement the traditional shielding strategies, providing mission operators additional ways to decrease the danger. Five different attitude control and orbit maneuvering options are examined in detail. The information is presented in algorithmic form to allow technically competent, but meteoroid inexperienced, operators to easily understand the phenomena, assess the danger, and implement procedures. Although general in scope, the book emphasizes the Leonid meteor events of the 1998-2002 timeframe.

It includes his reflections on a dream realised - the landing on the Moon of Apollo 11 in July 1969.
