Judith of Blue Lake Ranch by Jackson Gregory Pdf

Bud Lee, horse foreman of the Blue Lake Ranch, sat upon the gate of the home corral, builded a cigarette with slow brown fingers, and stared across the broken fields of the upper valley to the rosy glow above the pine-timbered ridge where the sun was coming up. His customary gravity was unusually pronounced. "If a man's got the hunch an egg is bad," he mused, "is that a real good and sufficient reason why he should go poking his finger inside the shell? I want to know!" Tommy Burkitt, the youngest wage-earner of the outfit and a profound admirer of all that taciturnity, good-humor, and quick capability which went into the make-up of Bud Lee, approached from the ranch-house on the knoll. "Hi, Bud!" he called. "Trevors wants you. On the jump."

Judith of Blue Lake Ranch (1919) Bud Lee, horse foreman of the Blue Lake Ranch, was even more serious than usual when the telegram arrived. It seemed that even though the Blue Lake Ranch was a million-dollar outfit; it was short of cash. Worse, the men were now reporting to a woman they referred to as the "girl!" Every two weeks she was demanding a report, eternally butting in and making suggestions. Bud Lee resolved to see just what he could do about that little woman and her big ideas.

The deep gravity in the foreman's eyes was touched with a little twinkle by way of greeting. Burkitt stopped at the gate, looking up at Lee. "On the jump, Trevors said," he repeated. "The hell he did," said Lee pleasantly. "How old are you this morning, Tommy?"

"The hell he did," said Lee pleasantly. "How old are you this morning, Tommy?" Burkitt blushed. "Aw, quit it, Bud," he grinned. Involuntarily the boy's big square hand rose to the tender growth upon lip and chin which, like the flush in the eastern sky, was but a vague promise of a greater glory to be. "A hair for each year," continued the quiet-voiced man. "Ten on one side, nine on the other." "Ain't you going to do what Trevors says?" demanded Tommy. For a moment Lee sat still, his cigarette unlighted, his broad black hat far back upon his close-cropped hair, his eyes serenely contemplative upon the pink of the sky above the pines. Then he slipped from his place and, though each single movement gave an impression of great leisureliness, it was but a flash of time until he stood beside Burkitt. "Stick around a wee bit, laddie," he said gently, a lean brown hand resting lightly on the boy's square shoulder. "A man can't see what is on the cards until they're tipped, but it's always a fair gamble that between dawn and dusk I'll gather up my string of colts and crowd on. If I do, you'll want to come along?" He smiled at young Burkitt's eagerness and turned away toward the ranch-house and Bayne Trevors, thus putting an early end to an enthusiastic acquiescence. Tommy watched the tall man moving swiftly away through the brightening dawn.

The Fire Flower by Jackson Gregory Pdf

This book tells the story of John Sheldon. Excerpt: John Sheldon; who lived joyously, heedlessly, often enough recklessly. When other men grumbled he had been known to laugh. While these last lean, hard years had toughened both physical and mental fiber, they had not hardened his heart. And yet, a short five days ago, he had had murder in his heart. He had just made his "pile"; he, with Charlie Ward, who, Sheldon had thought, was straight. And straight the poor devil would have been had it not been that he was weak and there was a woman. He wanted her; she wanted his money. It's an olstory...He had befriended Ward, and Ward had robbed him. In the first flare of wrath he took up the man's trail. He followed the two for ten days, coming up with them then at Belle Fortune...There had been ten days of riot, wine and cards, and roulette-wheel, for Charlie Ward and the woman. Sheldon, getting word here and there, had had little hope of recovering his money. But he did not expect what he did find.

The Wake of Forgiveness by Bruce Machart Pdf

“A mesmerizing, mythic saga” of a Texas family damaged by a dark past, and a son driven by a need for redemption (The New York Times Book Review). On a moonless Texas night in 1895, an ambitious young landowner suffers the loss of his wife—“the only woman he’s ever been fond of”—when she dies giving birth to their fourth son, Karel. The boy is forever haunted by thoughts of the mother he never knew and the bloodshot blame in his father’s eyes, and is permanently marked by the yoke he and his brothers are forced to wear to plow the family fields. But from an early age, Karel proves remarkably talented on horseback, and his father enlists him to ride in horseraces against his neighbors, with acreage as the prize. Now, Karel prepares for a high-stakes race against a powerful Spanish patriarch and his alluring daughters—and hanging in the balance are his father’s fortune, his brothers’ futures, and his own fate—in this “powerful story of familial love, anguish, and hatred” (The Dallas Morning News). “[A] luminous and wrenching tale of four motherless brothers.” —Entertainment Weekly “This intense, fast-paced debut novel is hard to put down. Machart’s hard-hitting style is sure to capture fans of Cormac McCarthy and Jim Harrison.” —Library Journal, starred review “A gripping American drama.” —Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried

Colorado by William MacLeod Raine Pdf

"Mr. Raine gives us early Colorado in full and persuasive detail. We see Denver in 1860, with its shanty-lined streets, its brutal citizenry, and its primitive justice. The picture is decidedly stimulating in its reminder that the pioneer days of Colorado are within the memory of men and women now living. We in the snug East need to have our memories thus jogged. The novel does more than that, however, for in it we get an unpretentious, satisfactory adventure story, in which we find the usual outlaws, stagecoaches, and saloons. In addition, there is the love of a lusty lad for a beautiful girl. We find nothing remarkable in the plot, to be sure, but our common sense suffers no assaults. "Colorado" is, in short, agreeable adventure set against a splendid background." —The Saturday Review
