Just Like Jesse Owens by Andrew Young Pdf

Civil rights icon, Ambassador Andrew Young and his daughter, Paula Young Shelton, deliver a powerful oral history about a special day in Andrew’s childhood that changed him forever. This story of race relations in the 1930s South is illustrated by bestselling Caldecott Honor winner Gordon C. James. As a boy, Andrew Young learned a vital lesson from his parents when a local chapter of the Nazi party instigated racial unrest in their hometown of New Orleans in the 1930s. While Hitler's teachings promoted White supremacy, Andrew's father, told him that when dealing with the sickness of racism, "Don't get mad, get smart." To drive home this idea, Andrew Young Senior took his family to the local movie house to see a newsreel of track star Jesse Owens racing toward Olympic gold, showing the world that the best way to promote equality is to focus on the finish line. The teaching of his parents, and Jesse Owens' example, would be the guiding principles that shaped Andrew's beliefs in nonviolence and built his foundation as a civil rights leader and advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The story is vividly recalled by Paula Young Shelton, Andrew's daughter.

The Pastor's Son by Sidney Mason Pdf

Donald Anderson has always done what he was told and always tried to be what his father wanted him to be. Up until a certain point in his life, he was living and breathing a culture he was never sure of, and he wasn’t sure of his prepared destiny. He would come home one day to a devastating scene—a scene that would cause his steps to take a different course, leading him from his calling as a preacher in small Bailey County to the restless streets of Salem City. There he would learn of a new life and culture with his estranged cousin, Rico Martin, the self-proclaimed slumlord, to guide him from one sin to the next and ultimately to his true self. He would learn more about himself living a life of sin as his father would put it, then living his whole life preaching the gospel back in Bailey County. Then he meets a young woman in Salem City who would raise many questions in him about what’s right and wrong in God’s eyes. She would help him to face the past he tried desperately to escape.

The Trauma Question by Roger Luckhurst Pdf

In this book, Roger Luckhurst both introduces and advances the fields of cultural memory and trauma studies, tracing the ways in which ideas of trauma have become a major element in contemporary Western conceptions of the self. The Trauma Question outlines the origins of the concept of trauma across psychiatric, legal and cultural-political sources from the 1860s to the coining of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in 1980. It further explores the nature and extent of ‘trauma culture’ from 1980 to the present, drawing upon a range of cultural practices from literature, memoirs and confessional journalism through to photography and film. The study covers a diverse range of cultural works, including writers such as Toni Morrison, Stephen King and W. G. Sebald, artists Tracey Emin, Christian Boltanski and Tracey Moffatt, and film-makers David Lynch and Atom Egoyan. The Trauma Question offers a significant and fascinating step forward for those seeking a greater understanding of the controversial and ever-expanding field of trauma research.

Reno (by the) in the Lake and Other Stories by Jim Hartman Pdf

I guess, in truth, “Reno by the/in the Lake” is my “Autobiography Light.” The material is indeed autobiographical in that little has been gleaned from any outside source and it is definitely light both in serious content and the serious nature often portrayed by an autobiography. So read on just for fun. Reno Beach was a magical place in the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s, a resort town that never really quite reached its prime. It had, however attained great stature in the hearts and minds of all it entertained, especially in the imagination of a young boy who could see adventure, even in the smallest buttonhole or banal blemish. In his mind a vegetable garden became a wilderness plantation. An overturned rowboat became a fortress, a pirate’s treasure cave or a magician’s maudlin mansion. A willow tree only recently uprooted by the wind and waves of an angry possessive lake trying desperately to reclaim its own; this became the perfect home for “Tarzan (Jimmie) of the Apes.” The fact that I’m even writing this book belies the fact that the place and that little boy still live, if only in my imagination. The stories you’re about to read are about that small waterfront community just east of Toledo Ohio on the western end of Lake Erie and how it’s life; death and frequent revitalizations affected the life of one small boy, namely me. The stories are absolutely true except as altered by an aging memory, wishful thinking and delusions of grandeur, not necessarily in that order, and they represent some of the very best days of my life. I’ve been told that it’s good to share your very best. I hope you enjoy reading my stories nearly as much as I enjoyed living them. The writing’s been fun too. Some names and places may have been altered to protect the innocent and/or the guilty, but not many. Some may also be changed just because I’ve forgotten or don’t really know what I’m talking about. Please forgive me. Many may recognize themselves, a friend or family member in some of these stories and each one probably deserves whatever treatment or attention they received, either good or bad. This book is intended to be a “Bathroom Book.” This is not a negative. For those unable to grasp this creative terminology I provide the following explanation in the form of a prescription: Take in small doses. Continuous exposure could be hazardous to your health and could lead to an abrasive situation requiring an immediate application of Preparation “H.” This does not imply that either you the reader or the writer is full of . . . Anything. Should you disapprove of any of the material in this book please feel free to remove the offending pages and put them to better use right there in the “Reading Room” solving the problems of the moment. I’m sure you understand. Enjoy. Life is short. Don’t waste it on seriousness.

Thugness by Sumer Tyme Pdf

When Tracy—a successful singles and couples counselor—turned thirty, she decided that she was ready to settle down. Tracy had not dated since her early college days. She took time to focus on her career. One day, she saw this dark skin, six-foot-tall guy walk into Pierre's. He had all the makings of a thug. A chance encounter a few days later, the two would meet. Christian Giles was an up-and-coming music producer from a different side of town than Tracy. Since he had thug qualities, Tracy named him Thugness. From there, they entered into a relationship filled with love, compassion, and understanding—a love that reminded her of the love her dad had always shown her. The relationship was going well until Chris's past came back to haunt him. Tracy and Christian ended their relationship. A heartbroken Tracy didn't want to deal with the memories of her and Christian's relationship, so she moved to a new house and a new office. Across the hall worked a money-worshipping six-foot-two, brown-skinned dentist with a million-dollar smile, named Dr. Shawn Richards. Their first meeting was something that Tracy wanted to forget, but Shawn was able to woo her into a relationship. As months went by, Shawn asked Tracy to marry him. Tracy said yes. A month before the wedding, while at the mall, Tracy saw a familiar face. One she hadn't seen in a few years. She soon realized that it was Thugness. She told him she was getting married and walked away. On the wedding day, as her dad walked her down the aisle, Tracy was all set to marry Shawn. He stood at the front of the tree house, awaiting her arrival. With her hand in his, the officiant asked if anyone knew why the two should not be married. Tracy was surprised to see Thugness standing in front of her. Tracy must now choose between the love she never got over, or the love that she was unsure of. Whom would she choose?
