Dark Ghettos by Tommie Shelby Pdf

Why do American ghettos persist? Scholars and commentators often identify some factor—such as single motherhood, joblessness, or violent street crime—as the key to solving the problem and recommend policies accordingly. But, Tommie Shelby argues, these attempts to “fix” ghettos or “help” their poor inhabitants ignore fundamental questions of justice and fail to see the urban poor as moral agents responding to injustice. “Provocative...[Shelby] doesn’t lay out a jobs program or a housing initiative. Indeed, as he freely admits, he offers ‘no new political strategies or policy proposals.’ What he aims to do instead is both more abstract and more radical: to challenge the assumption, common to liberals and conservatives alike, that ghettos are ‘problems’ best addressed with narrowly targeted government programs or civic interventions. For Shelby, ghettos are something more troubling and less tractable: symptoms of the ‘systemic injustice’ of the United States. They represent not aberrant dysfunction but the natural workings of a deeply unfair scheme. The only real solution, in this way of thinking, is the ‘fundamental reform of the basic structure of our society.’” —James Ryerson, New York Times Book Review

Shelby's Justice by Dale Haynes Pdf

How far would a person go to seek justice? This is the question Susan must ask herself when, not only her good friend Shelby goes missing, but when her own life is at stake. While love and men seems abundant for Shelby, Susan has little experience with men. The last man Susan sees her friend Shelby with will have a lasting effect on Susan's life. When Shelby is murdered, a sick feeling comes over Susan as she suspects Shelby's last boyfriend. Past and present collide when the man who murdered her childhood friend comes after Susan's daughter. Through the support of her family and the power of prayer, Susan fights against fear and the feeling of hopelessness to risk her life and get back her daughter. A story of unimaginable suffering and remarkable triumph, Shelby's Justice proves trust in God and oneself is the only weapon needed in the fight for justice. About the Author Dale Haynes has been a vascular technologist for twenty-five years, as well as the president and CEO of an electrical engineering company for twenty years. She's married to a wonderful man, and grandmother to seven grandchildren. Personal experiences with abuse prompted her to write this story as a form of release. Now that her children are grown, she wishes to fulfill her dreams. Dale wants her readers to take away the concept of hope, the power of prayer, and to never give up.

We Who Are Dark by Tommie Shelby Pdf

We Who Are Dark provides the first extended philosophical defense of black political solidarity. Tommie Shelby argues that we can reject a biological idea of race and agree with many criticisms of identity politics yet still view black political solidarity as a needed emancipatory tool. In developing his defense of black solidarity, he draws on the history of black political thought, focusing on the canonical figures of Martin R. Delany and W. E. B. Du Bois.

Justice Deferred by Orville Vernon Burton,Armand Derfner Pdf

“[A] learned and thoughtful portrayal of the history of race relations in America...authoritative and highly readable...[An] impressive work.” —Randall Kennedy, The Nation “This comprehensive history...reminds us that the fight for justice requires our constant vigilance.” —Ibram X. Kendi “Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its historical and legal analysis...makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the US Supreme Court’s role in America’s difficult racial history.” —Tomiko Brown-Nagin, author of Civil Rights Queen: Constance Baker Motley and the Struggle for Equality From the Cherokee Trail of Tears to Brown v. Board of Education to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act, Orville Vernon Burton and Armand Derfner shine a powerful light on the Supreme Court’s race record—uplifting, distressing, and even disgraceful. Justice Deferred is the first book that comprehensively charts the Supreme Court’s race jurisprudence, detailing the development of legal and constitutional doctrine, the justices’ reasoning, and the impact of individual rulings. In addressing such issues as the changing interpretations of the Reconstruction amendments, Japanese internment in World War II, the exclusion of Mexican Americans from juries, and affirmative action, the authors bring doctrine to life by introducing the people and events at the heart of the story of race in the United States. Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court, but as this sweeping history reminds us, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all.

Strategies of Justice by Burke A. Hendrix Pdf

Political theorists often imagine themselves as political architects, asking what an ideal set of laws or social structures might look like. Yet persistent injustices can endure for decades or even centuries despite such ideal theorizing. In circumstances of this kind, it is essential for political theorists to think carefully about the political choices available to those who directly face such injustices and seek to change them. This book focuses on the claims of Aboriginal peoples to better treatment from the United States and Canada. Though other groups face similarly persistent injustices (e.g. African Americans in the United States), the specific details of injustice matter a great deal for its analysis. The book focuses on two intertwined issues: the kinds of moral permissions that those facing persistent injustice have when they act politically, and the kinds of transformations that political action may bring about in those who undertake it. The book argues for normative permissions to speak untruth to power; to circumvent or nullify existing law; to give primary attention to protecting one's own community first; and to engage in political experimentation that reshapes future generations. When carefully used, the book argues, these permissions may help political actors to avoid co-optation and self-delusion. At the same time, divisions of labor between those who grapple most closely with state institutions and those who keep their distance may be necessary to facilitate escape from persistent injustice over the long term. Oxford Political Theory presents the best new work in contemporary political theory. It is intended to be broad in scope, including original contributions to political philosophy, and also work in applied political theory. The series will contain works of outstanding quality with no restriction as to approach or subject matter. Series Editors: Will Kymlicka and David Miller.
