"Argues persuasively that Christian teaching about the Spirit (pneumatology) has much to offer to a correct understanding of justification.... We have here a book of singular consequence."ùWilliam G. Rusch, Yale Divinity School --
Truth in Translation is a critical study of Biblical translation, assessing the accuracy of nine English versions of the New Testament in wide use today. By looking at passages where theological investment is at a premium, the author demonstrates that many versions deviate from accurate translation under the pressure of theological bias.
Justification as the Speech of the Spirit by Jeffrey K. Anderson Pdf
In the past few decades there have been an increasing number of authors and movements that reject the classic Protestant understanding of justification (e.g., the New Perspective on Paul, Auburn Avenue Theology, the Renewal Movement, etc.). While the various proposals differ in many respects, they are generally united in their rejection of justification as a legal declaration made by the Father about the believer based on the work of the Son. In particular, among renewal (Pentecostal/Charismatic) authors, there have been several attempts to redefine justification, insisting that it is an umbrella term incorporating numerous redemptive ideas rather than a declaration of the believer’s righteousness. These attempts are in part rooted in the absence of any overt pneumatology in the doctrine’s typical formulation. One need only read the above sentences to see that there is no mention of the Holy Spirit. This book addresses these and other concerns, especially by renewal authors, and demonstrate that the doctrine is, in fact, pneumatologically informed, albeit latently rather than blatantly. As a result, there is no need to redefine the theology of the Reformers and their successors.

The Light and Life of Christ Within ... the Quakers' Principles Justified ... from the False ... Constructions Put Upon Them by William Burnet in ... The Capital Principles of the People Called Quakers ... by George Whitehead Pdf
Analyzing and comparing the doctrines of justification held by a legendary nineteenth-century Catholic, John Henry Newman, and an Italian hero of the Reformation, Peter Martyr Vermigli, this book uncovers abiding opportunities, as well as obstacles at the Catholic-Protestant divide. These earnest scholars of the faith were both converts, moving in opposite directions across that divide, and, as a result, speak to us with an extraordinary degree of credibility and insight. In addition to advancing scholarship on several issues associated with Newman's and Vermigli's doctrines, and illuminating reasons and attendant circumstances for conversion across the Tiber, the overall conclusions of this study offer a broader range of soteriological possibilities to ecumenical dialogue among Roman Catholics and Reformed Protestants by clarifying the common ground to which both traditions may lay claim.

All my books can be read online free at wayneodonnell.com. “Freely you have received, freely give” (Mt. 10:8). This booklet is included in and comprises one section of my book Physical and Spiritual Salvation: Justification, Sanctification, Glorification, the Messianic Kingdom, & Ezekiel’s Temple in Ezekiel 40-48, Matthew, Romans, & 1 John. Like most books and passages in the Bible, the topic is given in the first few verses. “The Gospel [good news] of God,” Rom. 1:1. More specifically the “salvation” (Rom. 1:18) God provided us. The main proposition of Romans is that all who have been justified, are being sanctified, and will be glorified - guaranteed, because of the way in which they were justified by having been joined in union with Messiah and thus sharing without fail in both forgiveness through his death and the power of his resurrection life. “We were buried with him by [union] into [his] death, so that ... we will also walk in [his] newness of [resurrection] life,” Rom. 6:4. “The gospel ... is the power of God to [all of] salvation [justification, sanctification, and glorification] to every one that believes ..., because therein is revealed the righteousness of God [justification],” Rom. 1:16-17. Our sanctification and glorification are guaranteed because of our justification. The salvation God provided to us in Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew, which means ‘salvation’), is also comprised of both spiritual and physical parts. Justification and sanctification are spiritual; but glorification, like also resurrection, is physical. God’s workings with Israel are also in the physical realm. “Israelites; to whom pertains the [national] adoption, and the [shekinah] glory, and the [Abrahamic, Land, Davidic, and New] covenants, and the giving of the [Mosaic] law, and the [temple] service of God, and the promises [throughout the Old Testament]; ... and of whom as concerning the flesh Messiah came,” Rom. 9:4-5. The realm where genealogies matter. “I ... am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin,” Rom. 11:1. So much misinterpretation of scripture, like that of Reformed Theology, is due to their felt need to leave the principle of literal interpretation of scripture because of their failure to differentiate between things like personal spiritual salvation and national physical salvation. Spiritual Salvation: “Having been justified by faith [past spiritual event of justification], we have had our access ... into this grace wherein we stand [present spiritual process of sanctification];” Physical Salvation: “and rejoice in hope of the glory of God [future physical event of glorification],” Romans 5:1-2.
In this important study Hays argues against the mainstream that any attempt to account for the nature and method of Paul's theological language must first reckon with the centrality of narrative elements in his thought. Through an in-depth investigation of Galatians 3:1-4:11, Hays shows that the framework of Paul's thought is neither a system of doctrines nor his personal religious experience but the "sacred story" of Jesus Christ.
