Kaah Taak'in by Terry Godfrey Pdf

A large band of young adults flee from the only home they have known. They are led by the third son of their demanding ruler. The people are pursued for a time by their ruler. Later, they are confronted by many adversaries. The Taak’inal, as they call themselves, must walk for over a year before they find a location to build their new home. Upon this path, they face not only many enemies but also harsh weather and elements they had never before encountered. Along the way, the Taak’inal learned to work together in harmony and enjoy what they have. The leader Erdrich, the son of the old ruler, grows into a trusted and loved ruler. He puts the needs and comforts of his people before his own desires. Once they arrive at the location on the plains, they build a great city. Again, they must face enemies as they complete the construction of a city lined with gold. Together they are strong and content with their lives. As the people that had left their homes from tyranny grow old and die, the younger generation takes over. Within a couple generations, the happiness and harmony is replaced with greed, immorality, and laziness. This leads to the total downfall of the civilization and eventually the total collapse of the once great city their forefathers had created.

Parallel Worlds by Kerry M. Hull,Michael D. Carrasco Pdf

Despite recent developments in epigraphy, ethnopoetics, and the literary investigation of colonial and modern materials, few studies have compared glyphic texts and historic Maya literatures. Parallel Worlds examines Maya writing and literary traditions from the Classic period until today, revealing remarkable continuities across time. In this volume, contributions from leading scholars in Maya literary studies examine Maya discourse from Classic period hieroglyphic inscriptions to contemporary spoken narratives, focusing on parallelism to unite the literature historically. Contributors take an ethnopoetic approach, examining literary and verbal arts from a historical perspective, acknowledging that poetic form is as important as narrative content in deciphering what these writings reveal about ancient and contemporary worldviews. Encompassing a variety of literary motifs, including humor, folklore, incantation, mythology, and more specific forms of parallelism such as couplets, chiasms, kennings, and hyperbatons, Parallel Worlds is a rich journey through Maya culture and pre-Columbian literature that will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology, ethnography, Latin American history, epigraphy, comparative literature, language studies, indigenous studies, and mythology.

Discarded Pages by Kathleen Rock Martín Pdf

Araceli Cab Cumí is a contemporary Maya writer, grassroots leader, and political party activist from Mexico. She is also the only indigenous woman to have been elected to the State Congress of Yucatan, serving two terms of office. Discarded Pages is Cab Cumí's life narrative accompanied by her essays, poems, personal narratives, and political and public policy papers. Titled in honor of Cab Cumí's earliest writings which she had thrown away thinking them of little value, Discarded Pages showcases her expressions and thoughts within the context of her eventful and unusual life. In addition to translations of her work, Cab Cumí's original Spanish and Yucatec Maya writings are included in the book. Gramsci's theoretically innovative concept of the "organic intellectual" is used to analyze Cab Cumí's life and career. The book expands on Gramsci's original concept to include discussions of gender, new social movements, and the social context in which organic intellectuals labor as activists and thinkers. Throughout Discarded Pages Cab Cumí movingly represents the worldview of a Maya woman seeking to represent other Maya women.

Unity and diversity in grammaticalization scenarios by Walter Bisang,Andrej Malchukov Pdf

The volume contains a selection of papers originally presented at the symposium on “Areal patterns of grammaticalization and cross-linguistic variation in grammaticalization scenarios” held on 12-14 March 2015 at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. The papers, written by leading scholars combining expertise in historical linguistics and grammaticalization research, study variation in grammaticalization scenarios in a variety of language families (Slavic, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, Bantu, Mande, "Khoisan", Siouan, and Mayan). The volume stands out in the vast literature on grammaticalization by focusing on variation in grammaticalization scenarios and areal patterns in grammaticalization. Apart from documenting new grammaticalization paths, the volume makes a methodological contribution as it addresses an important question of how to reconcile universal outcomes of grammaticalization processes with the fact that the input to these processes is language-specific and construction-specific.

The Beatles as Musicians : Revolver through the Anthology by Walter Everett Associate Professor of Music in Music Theory University of Michigan Pdf

Given the phenomenal fame and commercial success that the Beatles knew for the entire course of their familiar career, their music per se has received surprisingly little detailed attention. Not all of their cultural influence can be traced to long hair and flashy clothing; the Beatles had numerous fresh ideas about melody, harmony, counterpoint, rhythm, form, colors, and textures. Or consider how much new ground was broken by their lyrics alone--both the themes and imagery of the Beatles' poetry are key parts of what made (and still makes) this group so important, so popular, and so imitated. This book is a comprehensive chronological study of every aspect of the Fab Four's musical life--including full examinations of composition, performance practice, recording, and historical context--during their transcendent late period (1966-1970). Rich, authoritative interpretations are interwoven through a documentary study of many thousands of audio, print, and other sources.
