Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and Essanay by Ted Okuda,David Maska Pdf

Charlie Chaplin is universally hailed as the greatest comedic talent in the history of motion pictures. And yet Chaplin's early efforts-which account for more than half of his total output-are often overlooked in favor of his later films. In 1914 Chaplin appeared in a total of 35 films for the Keystone Film Company; the following year he signed with the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company, where he wrote, directed and starred in more than a dozen short comedies. Though the resulting pictures were frequently crude and erratic, they reveal the emergence of a formidable comic genius. Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and Essanay: Dawn of the Tramp is a film-by-film examination of this period in Chaplin's career, tracing the birth of his beloved 'Tramp" character and his evolution as an actor and filmmaker. Also discussed are how these movies have been re-edited, recopied, reissued and retitled over the years, with a special section that matches pseudonym titles to their original source film. Charlie Chaplin at Keystone and Essanay: Dawn of the Tramp is a fascinating look at the first celluloid steps taken by this legendary laughmaker, and is a must for all Chaplin fans, old and new.

Keystone Korner by Kathy Sloane Pdf

The award-winning photographer’s pictorial history of the famous San Francisco Jazz club featuring oral histories and more than 100 images—“A treasure” (SF Weekly). In the words of Wynton Marsalis, “Keystone Korner was the quintessential jazz club . . . a happy home to people of all persuasions.” During the 1970s, when jazz clubs across America were folding under the onslaught of rock and roll and disco, San Francisco’s Keystone Korner was an oasis for jazz listeners and musicians. Tucked away in the city’s North Beach area, the Keystone became one of the most important jazz spots in the United States. It was so beloved by musicians that superstars McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, and Elvin Jones played a benefit concert to raise money for its liquor license. In this book, award-winning photographer Kathy Sloane shares more than 100 black and white photographs documenting the musicians and regulars, the spontaneous moments and ephemeral scene of this legendary club. Together with these images, she has compiled a fascinating collage of first-hand oral histories that chronicle the Keystone experience. “From the antics of the photo-laden backroom to the underground hype of Ora Harris’ Keystone Kitchen, Sloane and fellow editor Sascha Feinstein leave no stone unturned. They examine the backstories of some of Keystone’s most lovable characters . . . a delightful sensory overload” (Downbeat).

Atlas of Keystone Reconstructive Technique in Melanoma Management by Felix Behan Pdf

Worldwide, it is quoted that 85% of Melanoma cases are treated surgically. The reliability of the Keystone Perforator Island Flap (KPIF) as a reconstructive technique has wide applications. Its low complication rate is the key to its surgical success. The technique is clearly explained in this Atlas by the author, a renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, who established this reconstructive principle over 20 years. The illustrations range from simple to complex cases in an easy-to-follow format. Audio files, as a supplementary tool, amplify the technique to enhance the reader’s experience and foster clear understanding. Chapters focussing on anatomical regions contain carefully selected cases accompanied by images to demonstrate a step-by-step surgical technique. The basic design format for all Keystones are highlighted, all sitting within the dermatomal precincts. The KPIF must contain a fascial base for lining and the island outline is an essential pre-requisite. It is hypothesized that this islanding creates a sympathectomy effect resulting in hyperaemic blood flow which optimises healing. Undermining up to 2/3 is permissible as long as there is a deep attachment of 1/3 at the base of the flap to contain the random perforator vascular support. This design allows the rotation, advancement and transposition (ART) of the flap to facilitate the reconstructive closures. Presumably, there are somatic and autonomic neural support lines accompanying the vascular pathways of these random perforator flaps. The vascular perforator tree must not be skeletonised (as in propellor flaps) to allow preservation of such anatomical elements - somatic, autonomic and lymphatic pathways, all of which are an essential component in any surgical repair. This KPIF provides an alternative to microvascular procedures where the biggest drawback is tissue match. The KPIF addresses this problem admirably with a low pain component, an excellent aesthetic match with a low vascular complication rate and a performed in an expeditious manner – these all characterise the KPIF. Simple solutions solve problems and this KPIF Atlas for Melanoma becomes a welcome companion to any surgical speciality including plastic and reconstructive surgeons, surgical oncologists, general surgeons and dermatologists.

Mt. Rushmore and Keystone by Tom Domek,Robert E. Hayes Pdf

In the heart of a geological upthrust, four presidents, memorialized in granite, gaze across the rugged country of South Dakota’s Black Hills. At the foot of the mountain lies Keystone, a small community indelibly linked to the carving of Mount Rushmore. In 1876, prospectors swarmed into the central Black Hills in search of gold. While they did find it, these early miners also found other minerals, such as tin and feldspar. By the turn of the 20th century, Keystone was well-known for its mineral riches, but also for the boom and bust cycles that often accompany mining. The town’s future was guaranteed in 1925, however, when Gutzon Borglum, a noted sculptor, arrived to secure a location for a monument to American democracy. Borglum drew heavily on the skills of Keystone miners, putting them to work on a mountain that would soon portray the images of Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt. In this book, readers will find vintage photographs—many never before published—that, along with engaging narrative, tell the story of Keystone and the carving of Mount Rushmore.

Keystone Species That Live in Forests by Mitchell Lane Publishers Inc.,Bonnie Hinman Pdf

Most arches built today contain a single building block at the top that is the most important piece. This special piece can be found in the arches of soaring cathedrals, doorways in temples, and even simple buildings made out of wooden blocks. It is called a keystone, and it holds everything else together. Remove the keystone and the building or doorway is likely to collapse. The same thing is true in nature. Certain species of animals and plants are so important to their ecosystems, that if they disappear, the whole system may collapse. They are called keystone species. Some keystone species are large, like white rhinos, while others are quite small, like honey bees. But size doesn't matter in an ecosystem. All living things rely on other species to survive. A keystone species plays an especially large role that affects many different species in an ecosystem. Some keystone species are at the top of a huge ecosystem like the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, while others may affect a tiny ecosystem in a river or forest. Whether the ecosystem is big or small, the result of a keystone species disappearing or being greatly reduced is the same. Just like one falling domino can cause many others to fall, the loss of a keystone species can lead to the extinction of many other species. Today scientists are focusing more attention on preserving the natural balance in ecosystems. Identifying and protecting keystone species is an important part of their work.

The Keystone Advantage by Marco Iansiti,Roy Levien Pdf

Leveraging the power of business networks for success. Whether it sells computers, clothing, or cars, your firm's fate is increasingly linked to that of many other firms, all of which must collaborate effectively in order for each to thrive. This phenomenon has changed the basis of competition from battle between firms to battles between networks of firms--and more than ever before, success depends on managing assets your company doesn't own. In The Keystone Advantage, Marco Iansiti and Roy Levien offer a new lens for understanding how these ubiquitous and complex business networks behave and explore the implications for strategy formulation, innovation, and operations management. Iansiti and Levien argue that biological ecosystems provide a powerful analogy to the functioning of business networks. Just as "keystone species" in nature play central roles in their ecosystems, companies such as Walmart, Microsoft, and Li & Fung deploy "keystone strategies" to actively shape and regulate the workings of their business ecosystems--dramatically improving their own performance in the process. Iansiti and Levien argue that the best keystones simplify the challenge of connecting a very large and distributed network of companies to their customers and provide "platforms" that other firms can leverage to increase productivity, enhance stability, and spur innovation. Drawing from more than ten years of research and practical experience across a range of industries, the authors identify three specific roles that firms play within business ecosystems: keystone, dominator, and niche. The book lays out a framework any firm can use to assess the characteristics of its own ecosystem, reevaluate its technology and operations strategy, and formulate specific tactics for gaining sustainable competitive advantage. Practical and insightful, The Keystone Advantage will help leaders, managers, and policy makers to understand, analyze, and successful execute strategy in today’s networked environments.
