Keystone Species That Live in the Sea and Along the Coastline by Bonnie Hinman Pdf

Most arches built today contain a single building block at the top that is the most important piece. This special piece can be found in the arches of soaring cathedrals, doorways in temples, and even simple buildings made out of wooden blocks. It is called a keystone, and it holds everything else together. Remove the keystone and the building or doorway is likely to collapse. The same thing is true in nature. Certain species of animals and plants are so important to their ecosystems, that if they disappear, the whole system may collapse. They are called keystone species. Some keystone species are large, like white rhinos, while others are quite small, like honey bees. But size doesn't matter in an ecosystem. All living things rely on other species to survive. A keystone species plays an especially large role that affects many different species in an ecosystem. Some keystone species are at the top of a huge ecosystem like the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, while others may affect a tiny ecosystem in a river or forest. Whether the ecosystem is big or small, the result of a keystone species disappearing or being greatly reduced is the same. Just like one falling domino can cause many others to fall, the loss of a keystone species can lead to the extinction of many other species.Today scientists are focusing more attention on preserving the natural balance in ecosystems. Identifying and protecting keystone species is an important part of their work.

Return of the Sea Otter by Todd McLeish Pdf

A science journalist's journey along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska to track the status, health, habits, personality, and viability of sea otters--the appealing species unique to this coastline that was hunted to near extinction in the 18th and 19th centuries. These adorable, furry marine mammals--often seen floating on their backs holding hands--reveal the health of the coastal ecosystem along the Pacific Ocean. Once hunted for their prized fur during the 1700s and 1800s, these animals nearly went extinct. Only now, nearly a century after hunting ceased, are populations showing stable growth in some places. Sea otters are a keystone species in coastal areas, feeding on sea urchins, clams, crab, and other crustaceans. When they are present, kelp beds are thick and healthy, providing homes for an array of sealife. When otters disappear, sea urchins take over, and the kelp disappears along with all of the creatures that live in the beds. Now, thanks to their protected status, sea otters are making a comeback in California, Washington, and Alaska.

Monster of God: The Man-Eating Predator in the Jungles of History and the Mind by David Quammen Pdf

"Rich detail and vivid anecdotes of adventure....A treasure trove of exotic fact and hard thinking." —New York Times Book Review For millennia, lions, tigers, and their man-eating kin have kept our dark, scary forests dark and scary, and their predatory majesty has been the stuff of folklore. But by the year 2150 big predators may only exist on the other side of glass barriers and chain-link fences. Their gradual disappearance is changing the very nature of our existence. We no longer occupy an intermediate position on the food chain; instead we survey it invulnerably from above—so far above that we are in danger of forgetting that we even belong to an ecosystem. Casting his expert eye over the rapidly diminishing areas of wilderness where predators still reign, the award-winning author of The Song of the Dodo and The Tangled Tree examines the fate of lions in India's Gir forest, of saltwater crocodiles in northern Australia, of brown bears in the mountains of Romania, and of Siberian tigers in the Russian Far East. In the poignant and troublesome ferocity of these embattled creatures, we recognize something primeval deep within us, something in danger of vanishing forever.

Something Rich and Strange: by Susan Davis Ph.D. Pdf

Something Rich and Strange breathes fresh air into a tired list of psychological how-to and theological you-should books. In this inspiring work, psychologist Susan Davis guides us through a process of self-discovery and personal growth toward new freedom, deeper love, and more joyous living. Using the biblical stories of the Exodus and of Jesus death and resurrection, ideas from modern psychology, and the words of writers, poets, and ordinary people, she shows that the path of the transformative journey is well traveled and available to us today. She includes a foreword by Eugene Peterson, author of The Message, and chapter-by-chapter questions for group discussion or personal reflection. This book is an invaluable map for those who are on the journey of psychological healing and spiritual formationand for those who guide them. The most distinctive thing about Dr. Daviss account of her work is that in weaving this tapestry using the threads of story and poetry and psychology, she does her work on a loom constructed from the parallel stories of the exodus of the Hebrews and the death and resurrection of Jesus. Reading Something Rich and Strange puts us in the unhurried and gentle company of a friend. Eugene Peterson, author and professor emeritus of spiritual theology, Regent College, British Columbia I have recognized how great an impact reading this book has had on me, and I believe this response is possible for anyone who would be willing to read Daviss book and allow it to read them as well. There is definitely a revealing process that takes place in the reader as they make connections to the correlating realities of their own journey out of slavery and into freedom, rather, wholeness. The Community Ecology of Sea Otters by Glenn R. VanBlaricom,James A. Estes Pdf

The impetus for this volume comes from two sources. The first is scientific: by virtue of a preference for certain large benthic invertebrates as food, sea otters have interesting and significant effects on the structure and dynamics of nearshore communities in the North Pacific. The second is political: be cause of the precarious status of the sea otter population in coastal California, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced, in June 1984, a proposal to establish a new population of sea otters at San Nicolas Island, off southern California. The proposal is based on the premise that risks of catastrophic losses of sea otters, due to large oil spills, are greatly reduced by distributing the population among two geographically separate locations. The federal laws of the U.S. require that USFWS publish an Environmental Impact Statement (ElS) regarding the proposed translocation of sea otters to San Nicolas Island. The EIS is intended to be an assessment of likely bio logical, social, and economic effects of the proposal. In final form, the EIS has an important role in the decision of federal management authority (in this case, the Secretary of the Interior of the U.S.) to accept or reject the proposal.
