Advances in Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems by Manuel Graña Pdf

In this 2012 edition of Advances in Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems the latest innovations and advances in Intelligent Systems and related areas are presented by leading experts from all over the world. The 228 papers that are included cover a wide range of topics. One emphasis is on Information Processing, which has become a pervasive phenomenon in our civilization. While the majority of Information Processing is becoming intelligent in a very broad sense, major research in Semantics, Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Engineering supports the domain specific applications that are becoming more and more present in our everyday living. Ontologies play a major role in the development of Knowledge Engineering in various domains, from Semantic Web down to the design of specific Decision Support Systems. Research on Ontologies and their applications is a highly active front of current Computational Intelligence science that is addressed here. Other subjects in this volume are modern Machine Learning, Lattice Computing and Mathematical Morphology. The wide scope and high quality of these contributions clearly show that knowledge engineering is a continuous living and evolving set of technologies aimed at improving the design and understanding of systems and their relations with humans.

Machine Learning Applications In Software Engineering by Du Zhang,Jeffrey J P Tsai Pdf

Machine learning deals with the issue of how to build computer programs that improve their performance at some tasks through experience. Machine learning algorithms have proven to be of great practical value in a variety of application domains. Not surprisingly, the field of software engineering turns out to be a fertile ground where many software development and maintenance tasks could be formulated as learning problems and approached in terms of learning algorithms. This book deals with the subject of machine learning applications in software engineering. It provides an overview of machine learning, summarizes the state-of-the-practice in this niche area, gives a classification of the existing work, and offers some application guidelines. Also included in the book is a collection of previously published papers in this research area.

Foundations of Knowledge Acquisition by Alan L. Meyrowitz,Susan Chipman Pdf

One of the most intriguing questions about the new computer technology that has appeared over the past few decades is whether we humans will ever be able to make computers learn. As is painfully obvious to even the most casual computer user, most current computers do not. Yet if we could devise learning techniques that enable computers to routinely improve their performance through experience, the impact would be enormous. The result would be an explosion of new computer applications that would suddenly become economically feasible (e. g. , personalized computer assistants that automatically tune themselves to the needs of individual users), and a dramatic improvement in the quality of current computer applications (e. g. , imagine an airline scheduling program that improves its scheduling method based on analyzing past delays). And while the potential economic impact of successful learning methods is sufficient reason to invest in research into machine learning, there is a second significant reason: studying machine learning helps us understand our own human learning abilities and disabilities, leading to the possibility of improved methods in education. While many open questions remain about the methods by which machines and humans might learn, significant progress has been made.

Mapping Forest Landscape Patterns by Tarmo K. Remmel,Ajith H. Perera Pdf

This book explores the concepts, premises, advancements, and challenges in quantifying natural forest landscape patterns through mapping techniques. After several decades of development and use, these tools can now be examined for their foundations, intentions, scope, advancements, and limitations. When applied to natural forest landscapes, mapping techniques must address concepts such as stochasticity, heterogeneity, scale dependence, non-Euclidean geometry, continuity, non-linearity, and parsimony, as well as be explicit about the intended degree of abstraction and assumptions. These studies focus on quantifying natural (i.e., non-human engineered) forest landscape patterns, because those patterns are not planned, are relatively complex, and pose the greatest challenges in cartography, and landscape representation for further interpretation and analysis.

Set-theoretic Fault-tolerant Control in Multisensor Systems by Florin Stoican,Sorin Olaru Pdf

Fault-tolerant control theory is a well-studied topic but the use of the sets in detection, isolation and/or reconfiguration is rather tangential. The authors of this book propose a systematic analysis of the set-theoretic elements and devise approaches which exploit advanced elements within the field. The main idea is to translate fault detection and isolation conditions into those conditions involving sets. Furthermore, these are to be computed efficiently using positive invariance and reachability notions. Constraints imposed by exact fault control are used to define feasible references (which impose persistent excitation and, thus, non-convex feasible sets). Particular attention is given to the reciprocal influences between fault detection and isolation on the one hand, and control reconfiguration on the other. Contents 1. State of the Art in Fault-tolerant Control 2. Fault Detection and Isolation in Multisensor Systems 3. Residual Generation and Reference Governor Design 4. Reconfiguration of the Control Mechanism for Fault-tolerant Control 5. Related Problems and Applications About the Authors Florin Stoican received a B.E. degree from the “Politehnica” University of Bucharest, Romania, in 2008 and his PhD from SUPELEC, France in 2011. He held an ERCIM Postdoctoral Fellowship with NTNU Trondheim, Norway, in 2012, and is currently Assistant Professor at “Politehnica” University of Bucharest. His main interest is the fault tolerant control of dynamical systems through the prism of set theoretic elements. His current work involves further results in set theory and constrained optimization problems. Sorin Olaru received an M.S. degree from the “Politehnica” University of Bucharest, Romania, and both his PhD and Habilitation from University Paris XI, France, being awarded the European Commission Archimedes Prize in 2002. Since 2001 he has held different positions at INRIA and SUPELEC in France and visiting appointments at the University of Newcastle, Australia and NTNU Trondheim, Norway. He is currently Professor at SUPELEC, a member of the INRIA Disco team and senior member of IEEE.
