Lacan and Cassirer by Antoine Mooij Pdf

The Neo-Kantian philosopher Cassirer and the psychoanalyst Lacan are two key figures in the so-called medial turn in philosophy: the notion that any form of access to reality is mediated by symbols (images, words, signifiers). This explains why the theories of both philosophers merit a description in their own unique idioms, as well as having their respective basic tenets compared. It will be argued that, rather surprisingly, these tenets turn out be complementary - actually correcting each other – based on their shared notion of man as an animal symbolicum. Its fruitfulness will be substantiated for a limited number of topics within the humanities: perception, language, politics and ethics, and mental disorder, all to be considered from this perspective.

Rhetoric and Culture in Lacan by Gilbert D. Chaitin Pdf

This is the first book to explore the full range and import of Lacan's theory of poetry and its relationship to his understanding of the subject and historicity. Gilbert Chaitin's lucid and accessible study of this famously complex thinker shows how Lacan moves beyond the traditionally hostile polarities of mythos and logos, poetics and philosophy, to conceive of the subject as a complex interplay between psychoanalysis, rationality and history. Lacan's incorporation of historical necessity into the formation of subjectivity enables him to illuminate the role literature plays in the creation of selfhood. Lacan's metaphor of the subject, Chaitin argues, draws not only on Saussure, Jakobson, Freud, Heidegger and Hegel but on hitherto unacknowledged sources such as Bertrand Russell and I.A. Richards. Chaitin explores the ambiguities, contradictions and singularities of Lacan's immensely influential work to provide a definitive account of the theoretical development across his entire career.

Ernst Cassirer by Steve G. Lofts Pdf

This systematic introduction to Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbolic forms demonstrates how his approach transforms the project of modernity in accord with the limitations of the modern conception of rationality. At the same time, this book functions as an introduction to Cassirer's thought.

Ernst Cassirer and the Critical Science of Germany, 18991919 by Gregory B. Moynahan Pdf

Recovering a lost world of the politics of science in Imperial Germany, Gregory B. Moynahan approaches the life and work of the philosopher and historian Ernst Cassirer (1874–1945) from a revisionist perspective, using this framework to redefine the origins of twentieth-century critical historicism and critical theory. The only text in English to focus on the first half of the polymath Cassirer’s career and his role in the Marburg School, this volume illuminates one of the most important – and in English, least-studied – reform movements in Imperial Germany.

Biosemiotic Research Trends by Marcello Barbieri Pdf

Biosemiotics (bios = life and semion = sign) is an interdisciplinary science that studies communication and signification in living systems. Communication is the essential characteristic of life. An organism is a message to future generations that specifies how to survive and reproduce. Any autocatalytic system transfers information (ie initial conditions) to its progeny so that daughter systems will eventually reach the same state as their parent. Self-reproducing systems have a semantic closure because they define themselves in their progeny. A sign (defined in a broadest sense) is an object that is a part of some self-reproducing system. A sign is always useful for the system and its value can be determined by its contribution to the reproductive value of the entire system. The major trend in the evolution of signs is the increase of their complexity via development of new hierarchical levels, ie, metasystem transitions. This book presents new research in this dynamic field.

Lacan and the Ghosts of Modernity by Marshall Needleman Armintor Pdf

To understand the achievement of Jacques Lacan, one must turn to his roots. This book explores the grounding of Lacan's psychoanalytic work in the intellectual and artistic movements of the modernist period. More specifically, it examines masculine anxiety in the modernist novel in terms of Lacan's work on psychosis, masochism, and narcissism, viewed against the broader cultural context of the modernist era. In the process, this book illustrates how Lacan's intellectual apprenticeships and encounters (both real and imaginary) play out in his mature work, beginning with the first seminars of the 1950s. Like other thinkers of the early twentieth century, the trajectory of Lacan's psychoanalytic career is shaped by tendentious confrontations with peers, forebears, and intellectual traditions.

Language and the Unconscious by Hermann Lang Pdf

Hermann Lang's Language and the Unconscious is the standard introduction to the "philosophical" psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan in Germany. His treatise advances the thesis that the unifying force behind the Lacanian oeuvre is the efficacy of the "talking cure" itself. This approach allows the reader to understand Lacan's relationship to Freud, to structuralism and to the philosophical concerns of Heidegger and Gadamer. Finally, Lang's interpretation of Lacan also has returns for students' of hermeneutics and literary theory; his correlation between hermeneutics and the Lacanian subject expands the language of the former, allowing an approach to subjectivity not compromised by the assumptions of post-Cartesian modern metaphysics.

Ruminations: Selected Philosophical, Historical, and Ideological Papers: Volume 1, Part 1, The Infinite by Eric v.d. Luft Pdf

Since the 1970s I have pursued three separate but overlapping and sometimes simultaneous careers: (1) philosopher / writer / teacher / historian of the long nineteenth century, 1789-1914; (2) editor / translator / photographer / publisher / biographer / encyclopedist; (3) cataloging librarian / rare books and special collections librarian / historian of medicine. Somehow these three vocations have garnered me some acclaim, even an entry in Who's Who in America. Each of them has resulted in some published or presented works. Because these works have been scattered in a wide variety of venues, some of which have gone out of print or have otherwise become generally unavailable - and of course with the oral presentations being gone as soon as they are given - I have thought it wise to select, epitomize, and bring them together in one place - here. Thus, what follows in these volumes is what I consider to be the most important of my shorter works.

The Artist-Philosopher and Poetic Hermeneutics by George Smith Pdf

Focusing on the aesthetic representation of trauma, George Smith outlines the nexus points between poetics and hermeneutics and shows how a particular kind of thinker, the artist-philosopher, practices interpretation in an entirely different way from traditional hermeneutics. Taking a transhistorical and global view, Smith engages artists, writers, and thinkers from Western and non-Western periods, regions, and cultures. Thus, we see that poetic hermeneutics reconstitutes philosophy and art as hybridizations of art and science, the artist and the philosopher, subject and object. In turn, the artist-philosopher's poetic-hermeneutic reconstitution of philosophy and art is meant to transform human consciousness. This book will be of interest to artists and scholars working in studio practice, art history, aesthetics, philosophy, cultural studies, history of ideas, history of consciousness, psychoanalytic studies, myth studies, literary studies, and creative writing.

Architectures of Hiding by Rana Abughannam,Émélie Desrochers-Turgeon,Pallavi Swaranjali,Federica Goffi Pdf

Architecture manifests as a space of concealment and unconcealment, lethe and alêtheia, enclosure and disclosure, where its making and agency are both hidden and revealed. With an urgency to amplify narratives that are overlooked, silenced and unacknowledged in and by architectural spaces, histories and theories, this book contends the need for a critical study of hiding in the context of architectural processes. It urges the understanding of inherent opportunities, power structures and covert strategies, whether socio-cultural, geo-political, environmental or economic, as they are related to their hidescapes – the constructed landscapes of our built environments participating in the architectures of hiding. Looking at and beyond the intentions and agency that architects possess, architectural spaces lend themselves as apparatuses for various forms of hiding and un(hiding). The examples explored in this book and the creative works presented in the interviews enclosed in the interludes of this publication cover a broad range of geographic and cultural contexts, discursively disclosing hidden aspects of architectural meaning. The book investigates the imaginative intrigue of concealing and revealing in design processes, along with moral responsibilities and ethical dilemmas inherent in crafting concealment through the making and reception of architecture.
