This book mainly addresses the applications of lasers in the manufacture of various industrial components. The technologies presented here have scopes of application ranging from the macro to meso and micro level of components and features. This book includes chapters on the basic and advanced applications of lasers in the manufacturing domain. They present theoretical and practical aspects of laser technology for various applications such as laser-based machining, micro-scribing, texturing, machining of micro-sized channels; laser welding; laser-based correction of sheet metal, i.e. straightening; laser forming; and laser technology for 3-D printing. Lasers have various applications such as the production of powerful lights for illumination or decoration; measurement of velocity (transportation) and length; interferometry; printing; recording; communication; bio-medical instrumentation and pollution detection. A significant body of literature is available on the physics of lasers and types of lasers. However it has been noted there are a few books published on the “applications of lasers in manufacturing domain,” a gap that this book remedies. Gathering contributions by leading engineers and academicians in this area, it offers a valuable source of information for young scientists and research students.

Micromachining Using Electrochemical Discharge Phenomenon by Rolf Wuthrich,Jana D. Abou Ziki Pdf

Micro-machining is an advanced manufacturing technique of growing importance, and adoption of micro-machining using electrochemical discharges (Micro-ECDM) has increased steadily in recent years. Among new developments is the interest of industry in Micro-ECDM. However, the potential of the technology is not being fully utilized and there is no comprehensive reference book available today covering it. Micromachining Using Electrochemical Discharge Phenomenon, Second Edition fills this gap. It is unique in its detailed coverage of all aspects of the Micro-ECDM process, as well as Spark Assisted Chemical Engraving (SACE). As such, it covers technologies such as chemical etching, micro-drilling, and other material removal mechanisms, high aspect ratio machining, design and construction of the machining apparatus, and a wide range of applications. The new edition compares Micro-ECDM and SACE with other micromachining technologies such as laser machining and traditional EDM. ECDM is used for machining of electrically non-conductive materials. Micro-ECDM/SACE is mainly applied to glass and the book focuses on glass, but the authors also present new results on other materials such as ceramics. In addition, techniques to modify material properties for the machining process are explained. The authors discuss machining strategies including the latest developments in micro-texturing of glass micro-channels and reports on developments in controlling and analysis aspects of machining. This book is a unique reference for engineers and industrial researchers involved in development, design and use of micromachining, chemical micro-drilling or chemical engraving techniques and equipment. Only all-encompassing reference coving Micro-ECDM and SACE available on the market Covers a wide range of applications, including applications in the MEMS industry and the Medical Devices and Medical Diagnostics industries New edition includes expanded sections on comparing Micro-ECDM/SACE with other micromachining technologies

Laser Processing and Diagnostics by D. Bäuerle Pdf

Laser processing is now a rapidly increasing field with many real and potential applications in different areas of technology such as micromecha nics, metallurgy, integrated optics, and semiconductor device fabrication. The neces s ity for such soph i st i cated 1 i ght sources as 1 asers is based on the spatial coherence and the monochromaticity of laser light. The spatial coherence permits extreme focussing of the laser light resulting in the availability of high energy densities which can be used for strongly loca lized heat- and chemical-treatment of materials, with a resolution down to 1 ess than 1 lJIll. When us i ng pul sed or scanned cw-l asers, 1 oca 1 i zat i on in time is also possible. Additionally, the monochromaticity of laser light allows for control of the depth of heat treatment and/or selective, nonthermal bond breaking - within the surface of the material or within the molecules of the surrounding reactive atmosphere - simply by tuning the laser wavelength. These inherent advantages of laser light permit micromachining of materials (drilling, cutting, welding etc.) and also allow single-step controlled area processing of thin films and surfaces. Processes include structural transformation (removal of residual damage, grain growth in polycrystalline material, amorphization, surface hardening etc.), etching, doping, alloying, or deposition. In addition, laser processing is not 1 imited to planar substrates.
