The Art of Lawn Tennis by William T. Tilden Pdf

Tennis is at once an art and a science. The game as played by such men as Norman E. Brookes, the late Anthony Wilding, William M. Johnston, and R.N. Williams is art. Yet like all true art, it has its basis in scientific methods that must be learned and learned thoroughly for a foundation before the artistic structure of a great tennis game can be constructed.

Methods and Players of Modern Lawn Tennis by J. Parmly Paret Pdf

Excerpt from Methods and Players of Modern Lawn Tennis I Have no patience with the players who say: "I do not read books on lawn tennis, and have no use for fine-spun theories." Mediocrity is almost always their portion. Their enjoyment of the game suffers because they neither theorise themselves nor study the theories evolved by others. When, about fifteen years ago, I began to play lawn tennis with some seriousness, my first thought was to secure instruction from the leading writers on the game. To a close study of the rules for rudimentary play laid down by, singularly enough, J. Parmly Paret in the Spalding Guide of that day, I owe, in considerable measure, what small portion of skill I have managed to accumulate. In particular, my possession of a backhand that is passable is due directly to Parct's admonitions on this subject. An understanding of my own needs has taught me what other players need. Furthermore, as publisher of "American Lawn Tennis" I have sold thousands of books on the game, which has made it possible for me to learn what the average player wants in a book. Out of this knowledge grew the determination to produce such a book, and the present volume is the result of that determination. Its title, "Methods and Players of Modem Lawn Tennis," designates it exactly. It deals with methods and players exclusively, and is designed to be a textbook for players desirous of improving their play. That it will accomplish this purpose, if closely and intelligently studied, I am absolutely convinced. I have been profoundly impressed with the success of the efforts the author has made to produce a book that would make a three-fold appeal to the beginner, to the average player and to the expert. The beginner will find in these pages a work that will start him right on the path to proficiency and ground him in the elements of the game. The average player will have before him a textbook that deals exhaustively with the production of strokes and their uses and the employment of proper tactics and generalship on the court. The expert, finally, will discover here much food for thought, no matter how thoroughly he may know the game. The book contains the most wonderful compilation of expert opinions that has ever been made. In laying the structure of the work, a series of over forty questions was drawn up, each dealing with some disputed point of play. The Game of Lawn Tennis and How to Play It by Oliver S. Campbell Pdf

Excerpt from The Game of Lawn Tennis and How to Play It The familiar recipe for making rabbit stew says that you must first catch your rabbit; likewise in playing lawn tennis you must first have your court. Courts may be three kinds - clay, dirt, and turf or grass the first being the rarest, the second the most common and the last the best. The first fundamental principle of a tennis court is that it must be level, and the second and equally as necessary that It be smooth. Scientific tennis cannot be played on the side of a h 11, neither is a polo field conducive to skillful work. This consideration cannot be too forcibly impressed upon the beginner or devotee and a piece of ground that at first sight seems perfectly horizontal will upon investigation be found to vary a foot or more from the strict level. See that your court is absolutely true to start with, for If you do not you will never make it a first-class one, however much labor you spend upon its subsequent improvement. The first expense of a clay court is greater perhaps than In the case of either of the other two styles and experience has not made it a favorite with expert players. The hard surface is very trying to the feet and the high bound of the light ball does not conduce to the better grade of scientific play. The most perfect examples of these courts are to be found in those of the Far and Near Club, of Hastings on-Hudson, and that of Dr. Havens, at Nahant, Massachusetts on which the annual Nahant invitation competition is played A brief description of the latter will serve as a good laid out typical clay court is made. The space to be occupied is first laid out and then the whole area excavated to a depth of about three feet. Essential Tennis by Ian Westermann Pdf

The essential book from online tennis coaching sensation Ian Westermann, founder of EssentialTennis.com What’s the number one thing stopping you from playing your best tennis? Ian Westermann, founder of the world’s #1 online tennis instruction portal, Essentialtennis.com, will confidently say it’s an obstacle you probably never thought of: The ball. You might think this sounds ridiculous. The whole point of tennis is to hit the ball over the net and in, so how can the ball be the thing that’s standing in the way? In fact, this is why the ball is such an impediment: your desire to hit a good shot, with the right mix of power and spin, to a specific spot on the court, prevents you from striking the ball the way you should. In Essential Tennis, readers – players and coaches, alike – will learn how improving at tennis actually happens and how to easily implement these lessons and integrate them into better play on the court. Players will hit stronger shots, make fewer errors, and beat players who are currently beating them. Coaches will look differently at what it means to provide a student with a holistic learning experience. Essential Tennis contains technique-based instruction for executing groundstrokes, volleys, and serves, as well as progressions, drills, and mindsets players should incorporate. Westermann illuminates strokes, movement, strategy, and mental toughness – all proven to be successful over 20 years with clients of all ages and skill levels.

Lawn Tennis by Jahial Parmly Paret Pdf

Excerpt from Lawn Tennis: Its Past, Present, and Future There is none too much literature on the game of lawn tennis, as may be gathered by a glance at the meagre (though complete) bibliography of the game that appears at the end of this work, and there is certainly need for more, since the game can be taught and learned by written instruction nearly as well as by personal direction. There are few capable instructors in America, too, which doubles the need for printed advice. That it requires much learning before one can expect to master it needs no proof. Eustace H. Miles, perhaps the cleverest of all amateur players of court tennis and rackets, expressed the opinion in a recent book that, "Personally, I find lawn tennis far the hardest and most scientific of all ball games that I have tried." Miles's argument is a good one, too, and bears repeating. He believes lawn tennis to be more scientific as well as more severe than similar games played indoors, because the player must always go to the ball, whereas he may wait for it to come to him in any game with side-walls and a back-wall. Lawn tennis is no child's play as the experts play it, and the physical stress of the game makes it somewhat of a tax on one's strength. The Complete Lawn Tennis Player by A. Wallis Myers Pdf

Excerpt from The Complete Lawn Tennis Player When this volume was contemplated, three objects were kept in view. The first was to demonstrate the evolution and organisation of a game which, in the short space of thirty years, has claimed more votaries and founded more clubs the world over than any other outdoor pastime in existence. The second was to treat methods of play, their developments and their results, their physiological and their psychological aspects, in such manner that both the beginner and the more experienced might derive some benefit. The third was to entertain, with the traditions and the ana of lawn tennis and with memories of some of its best-known exponents, that large army which wields the racket in many lands. In the more or less didactic chapters, those dealing with strokes in the making, I have received invaluable assistance from the Rev. A. E. Crawley, Headmaster of Derby School, who has made a profound study of their technique and whose practical experience as a player began in the days of Willie Renshaw. The exposition of the principles underlying the American service, its varieties and its complexities, is only one of the contributions in this section for which my acknowledgments to Mr. Crawley are due. These I very gratefully tender. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
