Le Strange Records by Hamon Le Strange Pdf

Excerpt from Le Strange Records: A Chronicle of the Early Le Stranges of Norfolk and the March of Wales A. D. 1100-1310; With the Lines of Knockin and Blackmere Continued to Their Extinction The present volume is an attempt to write the early history of the family from records of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries which have come down to us it is composed on the principle of printing original documents in full, and in the tongue, Latin, norman-french, or English, in which they were written. All dates have been reduced to the New Style, with the year commenc ing on January I, and place names have been generally modernized. In addition to the Rolls and Charters at the Public Record Office and the British Museum, which have been searched, con siderable use has been made of the family Muniments preserved at Hunstanton Hall. They are kept in a small vaulted chamber, originally the guard-room of the gate-house, built in the reign of Henry VII. It contains a large number Of early Rolls and Charters, many Of which documents were not noticed in the meagre description Of this collection, given in the Third Report Of the Historical Manuscripts Commission (pp. 271 by the late Mr. Alfred Horwood, who was only able to devote two days to the examination thereof. They were arranged, and a full Repertory of them was made by the late Mr. Henry Harrod, in 1869. The series of manorial Rolls relating to the Norfolk estates Of the family is extraordinarily ample, running from the reign of Henry III onwards, though of course there are many gaps in the series. The Magna Charta Sureties, 1215 by Frederick Lewis Weis,William Ryland Beall Pdf

At the signing of the Magna Charta, twenty-five men, representing the barons, signed as sureties of the baronial performance, in effect pledging the barons to fulfill their obligations to the Crown in accordance with the terms of the Great Charter. Of these twenty-five sureties only seventeen have identified descendants. Each of the seventeen is represented in the celebrated "Magna Charta Sureties," which traces their connections--line by line and generation by generation--to approximately 160 American colonists. Eight years have passed since the publication of the last edition of this work, however, and in the interval a great many additions, corrections, and revisions have accumulated. Brought to a very high standard by the unremitting efforts of its editor, Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr., this fifth edition incorporates new lines, corrects errors in existing lines, adds recently discovered material, and supplies references where they had previously been omitted. The result is a reliable and authoritative collection of interlocking pedigrees which carry the ancestry of some 160 American colonists back to the thirteenth century. With the possible exception of Weis's "Ancestral Roots" (also published by Genealogical Publishing Co.), this is probably the very best work ever written on the pre-colonial ancestry of American colonists.

Africans in East Anglia, 1467-1833 by Richard Maguire Pdf

What were the lives of Africans in provincial England like during the early modern period? How, where, and when did they arrive in rural counties? How were they perceived by their contemporaries? This book examines the population of Africans in Norfolk and Suffolk from 1467, the date of the first documented reference to an African in the region, to 1833, when Parliament voted to abolish slavery in the British Empire. It uncovers the complexity of these Africans' historical experience, considering the interaction of local custom, class structure, tradition, memory, and the gradual impact of the Atlantic slaving economy. Richard C. Maguire proposes that the initial regional response to arriving Africans during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries was not defined exclusively by ideas relating to skin colour, but rather by local understandings of religious status, class position, ideas about freedom and bondage, and immediate local circumstances. Arriving Africans were able to join the region's working population through baptism, marriage, parenthood, and work. This manner of response to Africans was challenged as local merchants and gentry begin doing business with the slaving economy from the mid-seventeenth century onwards. Although the racialised ideas underpinning Atlantic slavery changed the social circumstances of Africans in the region, the book suggests that they did not completely displace older, more inclusive, ideas in working communities.

Consumption and Gender in the Early Seventeenth-Century Household by Jane Whittle,Elizabeth Griffiths Pdf

Lady Alice Le Strange of Hunstanton in Norfolk kept a continuous series of household accounts from 1610-1654. Jane Whittle and Elizabeth Griffiths have used the Le Stranges' rich archive to reconstruct the material aspects of family life. This involves looking not only at purchases, but also at home production and gifts; and not only at the luxurious, but at the everyday consumption of food and medical care. Consumption is viewed not just as a set of objects owned, but as a process involving household management, acquisition and appropriation, a process that created and reinforced social links with craftsmen, servants, labourers, and the local community. It is argued that the county gentry provide a missing link in histories of consumption: connecting the fashions of London and the royal court, with those of middling strata of rural England. Recent writing has focused upon the transformation of consumption patterns in the eighteenth century. Here the earlier context is illuminated and, instead of tradition and stability, we find constant change and innovation. Issues of gender permeate the study. Consumption is often viewed as a female activity and the book looks in detail at who managed the provisioning, purchases, and work within the household, how spending on sons and daughters differed, and whether men and women attached different cultural values to household goods. This single household's economy provides a window into some of most significant cultural and economic issues of early modern England: innovations in trade, retail and production, the basis of gentry power, social relations in the countryside, and the gendering of family life.
