Learning To Live Together: Promoting Social Harmony by J. A. Scott Kelso Pdf

This book is devoted to the issue of how we can learn to live together in the face of division and conflict. It is dedicated to the life and work of a remarkable human being, Dr Epimenidis Haidemenakis, scientist, statesman, visionary leader, President Emeritus of the International S.T.E.P.S. Foundation and founding father of The Olympiads of the Mind (OM). The monograph consists of a collection of papers presented at the 8th and 9th Olympiads of the Mind held in Washington, DC and Chania, Crete respectively. Distinguished international scholars, government and corporate representatives, leading researchers and academics from multiple disciplines and Nobel Laureates Leon Lederman (Physics, 1988), Martin Perl (Physics, 1995) and Yuan T. Lee (Chemistry, 1986) address a broad range of issues all with the aim of improving the human condition and achieving cooperation among the people of the world. The topics include the environment, sustainability and security; diversity and how to achieve integration and peace among people in a fractured world; the important role of brain research; how to overcome poverty and inequality; how to enhance creativity and improve education at all levels; and how new technologies and tools can be used for common benefit. The culmination of the book is a call to action, to join what one might call the “OM Movement”—bringing the best minds in the world together to create solutions to world issues so that we can all live together in harmony.

Morphogenesis of Symbolic Forms: Meaning in Music, Art, Religion, and Language by Wolfgang Wildgen Pdf

In the present book, the starting line is defined by a morphogenetic perspective on human communication and culture. The focus is on visual communication, music, religion (myth), and language, i.e., on the “symbolic forms” at the heart of human cultures (Ernst Cassirer). The term “morphogenesis” has more precisely the meaning given by René Thom (1923-2002) in his book “Morphogenesis and Structural Stability” (1972) and the notions of “self-organization” and cooperation of subsystems in the “Synergetics” of Hermann Haken (1927- ). The naturalization of communication and cultural phenomena is the favored strategy, but the major results of the involved disciplines (art history, music theory, religious science, and linguistics) are respected. Visual art from the Paleolithic to modernity stands for visual communication. The present book focuses on studies of classical painting and sculpture (e.g., Leonardo da Vinci, William Turner, and Henry Moore) and modern art (e.g., Jackson Pollock and Joseph Beuys). Musical morphogenesis embraces classical music (from J. S. Bach to Arnold Schönberg) and political songwriting (Bob Dylan, Leonhard Cohen). The myths of pre-literary societies show the effects of self-organization in the re-assembly (bricolage) of traditions. Classical polytheistic and monotheistic religions demonstrate the unfolding of basic germs (religious attractors) and their reduction in periods of crisis, the self-organization of complex religious networks, and rationalized macro-structures (in theologies). Significant tendencies are analyzed in the case of Buddhism and Christianism. Eventually, a holistic view of symbolic communication and human culture emerges based on state-of-the-art in evolutionary biology, cognitive science, linguistics, and semiotics (philosophy of symbolic forms).

Reconceptualising Information Processing for Education by Geoff Woolcott Pdf

This book presents a novel conceptualisation of universal information processing systems based on studies of environmental interaction in both biological and non-biological systems. This conceptualisation is used to demonstrate how a single overarching framework can be applied to the investigation of human learning and memory by considering matter and energy pathways and their connections. In taking a stance based on everyday interactions, as well as on scientific practices, the conceptualisation is used to consider educational theories and practices, exemplified by the widely cited cognitive load theory. In linking these theories and practices more closely to scientific thinking, the book embraces an holistic approach to informational interactions, not limited to conceptualisations of pattern, signal or meaning. The book offers educational researchers and educators an opportunity to re-think their approach to instruction – to take all facets of student learning environments into account in increasing human knowledge, skills and experiences across society.

Contemporary Accounts in Drug Discovery and Development by Xianhai Huang,Robert G. Aslanian,Wayne H. Tang Pdf

CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTS IN DRUG DISCOVERY AND DEVELOPMENT A useful guide for medicinal chemists and pharmaceutical scientists Drug discovery is a lengthy and complex process that typically involves identifying an unmet medical need, determining a biological target, chemical library screening to identify a lead, chemical optimization, preclinical studies and clinical trials. This process often takes many years to complete, and relies on practitioners’ knowledge of chemistry and biology, but also—and perhaps more importantly—on experience. Improving the success rate in discovery and development through a thorough knowledge of drug discovery principles and advances in technology is critical for advancement in the field. Contemporary Accounts in Drug Discovery and Development provides drug discovery scientists with the knowledge they need to quickly gain mastery of the drug discovery process. A thorough accounting is given for each drug covered within the book, as the authors provide pharmacology, drug metabolism, biology, drug development, and clinical studies for every case, with modern drug discovery principles and technologies incorporated throughout. Contemporary Accounts in Drug Discovery and Development readers will also find Case histories used as an engaging way of learning about the drug discovery/development process Detailed biological rational and background information, drug design principles, SAR development, ADMET considerations, and clinical studies The full history of individual marketed small molecule drugs Coverage of drug candidates that have passed Phase I clinical trials with different modalities, such as antibody drug conjugates (ADC), proteolysis-targeting chimera (PROTAC), and peptide drugs The application of new technologies in drug discovery such as DNA-encoded libraries (DEL), positron emission tomography (PET), and physics-based computational modeling employing free energy perturbation (FEP) Contemporary Accounts in Drug Discovery and Development is a helpful tool for medicinal chemists, organic chemists, pharmacologists, and other scientists in drug research and process development. It may be considered essential reading for graduate courses in drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, drug synthesis, pharmaceutical science, and pharmacology. It is also a useful resource for pharmaceutical industry labs, as well as for libraries.

What can be done to address this? • How far are Muslim religious and political leaders responsible for the present conditions of the Indian Muslims? • How should the Indian Muslims relate to the present social and political context? • How can the Muslims of India earn the goodwill of people from the other communities in the country? Voices for the Future by Liz Mohn,Wolfgang Schüssel Pdf

How can culture, politics and business work together to meet the challenges of the future? Will united Europe fall victim to individual national interests? Is the economy the silver bullet when it comes to solving global challenges? Can policy makers still lead in an age of fake news and escalating expectations? What kind of support is needed – and from which culture – to shape a sustainable society? The book Voices for the Future documents the lively exchange between international thought leaders from the cultural, economic and political spheres on solutions to current and coming problems. Since 2002, they have been gathering at the Trilogue Salzburg to take a shared look at what the future holds. Where has the Trilogue been farsighted in terms of the issues that now dominate the policy agenda and our everyday lives? What must (still) happen if we are to respond effectively to future challenges? Voices for the Future essays answers to these questions, addressing the topics of Europe, the labor market, leadership, education and values.

The New Orthodoxy by Bruce J Clemenger Pdf

This book examines the founding non-sectarian approach to Canadian statecraft that accommodated religious and cultural diversity. The 1960’s promise of political liberalism embraced in Canada was to provide a philosophy of government that facilitates the individual's vision and pursuit of the good life. Decades later, the promotion of individual autonomy and fraternity by governments and the courts threatens to undermine the very freedom governments claim to promote and protect. Bruce J. Clemenger presents a biblically-based model of public and political engagement and a defense of religious freedom, especially the freedom to disagree, in an increasingly secularist state. A timely work.
