Lectures on Important Subjects in Divinity (Classic Reprint) by Finis Ewing Pdf

Excerpt from Lectures on Important Subjects in Divinity ON Opening a book, we naturally feel a desire to know something of its origin. To satisfy this curiosity, we say to the reader, that these Lectures were commenced by the Author, when a Theological School was taught in his neighborhood And the general plan was pursued after the school had been discontinued. An edition of these Lectures was printed, in 1827, for the Cumberland Presbyterian Synod. The work was well received. The publication of another edition has been repeatedly called for. It is now issued as a publication of the Cumberland Presbyterian Board. The copy right has been donated to the Board. A People Called Cumberland Presbyterians by Ben M. Barrus,Milton L. Baughn,Thomas H. Campbell Pdf

Light on a people's forward path comes from behind - from the past. Because Cumberland Presbyterians are eager for illumination for their ongoing mission this set of books have been written. In ÒA People Called Cumberland PresbyteriansÓ three writers have endeavored to directly and effectively present the convictions, dedication and purpose that formed this Presbyterian denomination on the American frontier and have impelled it through more than 160 years to the present. The books illuminate some of the most distinctive traits of the church. Many persons and events come to life in it. Not only the better known heroes and heroines of the movement are presented, but also many of the lesser known who play colorful and significant roles, and details typical of the ongoing life of the church are here, along with accounts of the stirring hours of its history.

Elements of Divinity by Thomas N. Ralston Pdf

Excerpt from Elements of Divinity: Or, a Course of Lectures, Comprising a Clear and Concise View of the System of Theology as Taught in the Holy Scriptures; With Appropriate Questions Appended to Each Lecture The design of this work is to present a clear and comprehensive outline of the General System of Bible Theology, in a smaller compass, and a form less intricate and perplexing to private Christians, young ministers, and students of Divinity, than the more critical and voluminous works heretofore published on the subject admit. It is hoped that the appropriate Questions appended to each Lecture will tend greatly to facilitate the study of young persons, and render the work a valuable auxiliary to senior Bible Classes and Sunday Schools, as well as a pleasing introduction to the critical study of Divinity, for junior ministers, private Christians, and young persons in general. Animated Son of Liberty by Walter McGinty Pdf

This is an account of a leading 18th century Scottish churchman, the Reverend John Witherspoon. His already colourful and eventful life took an unusual turn when in 1768, as a Minister of the Church of Scotland in a Paisley parish, he was persuaded to accept the office of President of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University. Within a year of taking up this academic post, he became involved in the Colonies' struggle for Independence. He was elected to Congress in 1775 and in 1776 was the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence. During his time of office as a Congressman, he served on over one hundred and twenty Congressional Committees and occupied key positions on both the Board of War and the Foreign Affairs Committee. He had a hand in drafting two of the foundation documents of the thirteen United States: the Articles of Confederation and the Declaration of Independence. Later, he was to provide the Instructions to the United States Delegates at the Paris Peace Conference in 1783. He was only prevented from participating in the Constitutional Convention which resulted in the production of the Constitution of the United States of America in 1789, because he had been already commissioned by the Presbyterian Church in America to Chair the Committee that was to produce its Confession of Faith and Books of Church Order and Discipline. Witherspoon transformed the College of New Jersey by broadening its curriculum to offer courses that would provide a substantial education for any one preparing for any of the Professions, or to engage in public life. He was a colleague of the first four Presidents of the USA: Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison (teaching Madison for four years and also Aaron Burr, who became a Vice-President). He was branded as a traitor by Britain, but won huge respect in America. This is a long-awaited biography giving a unique insight to interesting aspects of an important age.
