Excerpt: ... him, --he who had built the Court House at Chester on the model of the beautiful Propylseum of the Acropolis, and that he, Lord Elgin, immediately consulted Harrison how it was possible he could render his visit to Constantinople available to the improvement of architecture and sculpture, with reference to what remained at Athens. Harrison, who was a man of the purest taste and greatest simplicity of mind, told Lord Elgin that he could greatly serve architectural knowledge if he could get leave to procure casts from the Ionic columns at the end or angle of the pediments, in order to show us how the Greeks turned the volute round at that point. Harrison confirmed this to me after, at Chester, 1821; and he also added, the greatest good would accrue to the science by such casts, or by casts from any other order, or any other part of pure Greek building, which he might meet or admire; for, notwithstanding the beauty of Stewart's engravings, still there was something in a real projection of architecture, which, under the varieties of fight and shadow, far exceeded in utility any drawing which could be produced by the greatest draughtsman. Harrison added: sculpture, too, would be greatly benefitted and advanced by casts from any fine work remaining. Lord Elgin, thus advised by a man of so pure a mind and eminent a genius as Harrison, came up to London, and laid a plan (before embarking for Turkey) before Dundas, Lord Grenville, and Mr. Pitt; but all these replied, that with all their love for the arts (" an ounce of Civet, good apothecary!") they could not feel justified in advancing the public money for such objects! There is nothing more important than this tact, for nothing is so often intruded on painters as subjects for painting, the prospects of which exist only in the imagination of the chooser. Coleridge, with all his wild dreams, was always selecting for the artist; and I never in my life remember one of his subjects which had a single qualification. Coleridge was seldom intelligible, with the subtle distinctions of words, much less likely was it in art, which requires gross palpability, he could make himself understood. I have seen the finest scenes in the world between Coleridge and Sir George Beaumont Sir George's adoration of Sir Joshua was sincere. Coleridge would often attack him; the agony of Sir George between his enthusiasm for the genius of Coleridge and his awe for his departed friend are not to be done justice to. Sir Joshua relates a very curious anecdote of some one wishing to have painted what passed in Council with James the Second before the Revolution. As a painter has but one moment, --first, it must be a subject of palpable and gross interest, big with the past and pregnant with the future; next, your actions must be doing, your passions expressing, your lights and shadows fleeting, something must have passed, and something must be coming, and you choose the point of interest--the point between. There is Ananias, he has just dropped, why? for some cause passed, it is the moment, because the effect has not yet reached the extremities. For choice of moment, subject, and composition, Raffaelle is perfection, study him for ever. To return to the epic or sublime, I conceive it more peculiarly belongs to the elements, the air, .

The first publication of a series of lectures delivered by the 19th-century American painter to the New York Athenaeum in 1826, soon after he became president of the National Academy of Design. The four lectures marked an important step in the development of the artistic profession in the United States. Because Morse's audience was more familiar with literature and science than with painting, his strategy in these lectures was to explain the principles of painting, rather than the technicalities, by comparing them with the principles of other arts.
