The Legibility of Serif and Sans Serif Typefaces by John T. E. Richardson Pdf

This open access book provides a detailed and up-to-date account of the relevant literature on the legibility of different kinds of typefaces, which goes back over 140 years in the case of reading from paper and more than 50 years in the case of reading from screens. It describes the origins of serif and sans serif styles in ancient inscriptions, their adoption in modern printing techniques, and their legibility in different situations and in different populations of readers. It also examines recent research on the legibility of serif and sans serif typefaces when used with internet browsers, smartphones and other hand-held devices. The book investigates the difference in the legibility of serif typefaces and sans serif typefaces when they are used to produce printed material or when they are used to present material on computer monitors or other screens and it explores the differences in readers’ preferences among typefaces. The book’s main focus is on the psychology of reading, but there are clear implications for education and publishing. Indeed, the book can be read with benefit by anyone concerned with communicating with others through written text, whether it is printed on paper or displayed on computer screens.

Legibility of Segmented Versus Standard Numerals by Terrence K. Gibney Pdf

"The literature review compares the legibility of segmented numerals and standard Arabic numerals. Based on present literature, the following conclusions are drawn. When compared to standard Arabics, segmented numerals are usually found to be less legible. However, of all the nonstandard numeral designs, segmented numerals are consistently superior. As the complexity of the observer's task increases, differences between the legibilities of segmented and standard numerals become insignificant. Therefore, no appreciable decrement in functional legibility is to be expected from segmented numerals in applied situations where tasks are typically complex. Practice effects, observers' motivation and stress, interaction of design types, number of segments and intersegmental distance are important variables to be considered. At present, little is known about how these variables influence legibility. Future research on legibility should be conducted under conditions which most nearly simulate the situation for which the proposed design is intended."--Abstract.

Fictions of Legibility by Gabriela Stoicea Pdf

Gabriela Stoicea examines how the incidence and role of physical descriptions in German novels changed between 1771 and 1929 in response to developments in the study of the human face and body. As well as engaging the tools and methods of literary analysis, the study uses a cultural studies approach to offer a constellation of ideas and polemics surrounding the readability of the human body. By including discussions from the medical sciences, epistemology, and aesthetics, the book draws out the multi-faceted permutations of corporeal legibility, as well as its relevance for the development of the novel and for facilitating inter-disciplinary dialogue.

Illumination and Tilt as Factors in the Legibility of Reflex-reflective Numerals by Clarke W. Crannell,Anthony Debons Pdf

"AND 10400 digits made of reflex-reflective material and placed on a black background were found to be superior in identifiability to black digits on white or aluminum backgrounds at distances greater than 400 feet and also at lesser distances when the digits are tilted from the vertical axis. When the angle of observation is perpendicular to neither the vertical nor horizontal axis, legibility of digits of all types is reduced. At 500 feet, increases in illumination resulted in negligible improvement in legibility of the reflex-reflective digits."--Abstract
