Meditations on the Beatitudes by Donald R. Clymer Pdf

What does it mean to be meek? To hunger and thirst after righteousness? The author draws on stories from years of experience in Latin America to invite readers to glean insights regarding the Beatitudes' meaning. Writing in the Foreword, Leanne Eshleman Benner, who works at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community as a Resident Services Manager, says that "I'm always taken aback when something like Don Clymer's book jolts me into realizing just how enmeshed I have become in a culture which barely needs the Beatitudes. Our pockets and our minds are full to overflowing. Reading the Beatitudes then becomes a sort of academic exercise and/or a checklist for making us feel better about ourselves. Clymer vividly defines the Beatitudes in a way that opens a new circuit of thought. Because of the way he interweaves other cultures into the picture, he helps us recognize our cultural blinders and encourages us to take them off." Dorothy Jean Weaver, Professor of New Testament, Eastern Mennonite Seminary, observes that "Don Clymer's Meditations are creative, thoughtful, and substantive. Clymer does a beautiful job of setting up a personal story for each meditation and then reflecting on the beatitude in question and the conflicting cultural value associated with it. This is excellent material for study groups." And Orval Gingerich, Assistant Vice President, International Programs; and Director, Center for Global Education, Augsburg College, thinks that "Each meditation brings life to the words of Jesus by confronting the comfortable assumptions middle-class North Americans hold about life, happiness, and the gospel."

The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes by Yiu Sing Lúcás Chan Pdf

The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes are often considered significant texts for the Christian moral life. However, most interpretations of these passages either focus on the original meaning of the text or how the texts should impact ordinary living today. In The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes Yiu Sing Lúcás Chan brings together biblical studies and Christian ethics to look at these foundational texts in a new way. For each passage Chan asks both what the texts meant and what they mean today. He helps readers to carefully study the text’s original meaning, then interpret the text within a sound ethical framework. The Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes is an excellent introduction to key concepts in biblical studies and Christian ethics that combines sound study with warmth and wisdom.

The Ladder of the Beatitudes by Jim Forest,James H. Forest Pdf

Drawing on stories from the lives of the saints, scripture, and everyday life, Jim Forest opens up the mysteries of the Beatitudes. These ancient blessings, with which Christ began his Sermon on the Mount, are all aspects of communion with God. As Forest shows, they are like rungs on a ladder, each one leading to the next. They appear at the doorway of the New Testament to provide an easily memorized summary of everything that follows, right down to the crucifixion ("Blessed are you who are persecuted") and the resurrection ("Rejoice and be glad").

With the Master Before the Mirror of God's Word by Susan Heck Pdf

"With the Master Before the Mirror of God's Word is a women's Bible Study on 1st John. The book of First John is a letter of self-examination to see if you are in the faith and living the example of the life of Christ. 1 John 2:1: ""My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). The tone is tender in this book as the Apostle John expresses love and concern to his readers, using that phrase, ""little children"" seven times. As we look in the mirror of God's Word we are to examine our hearts closely and we will see that we need to change!"

The Cross and the Beatitudes by Fulton J. Sheen Pdf

The Cross and the Beatitudes (1937) is a short volume by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Priest, philosopher, theologian, and educator, the Archbishop worked tirelessly to spread the word of Jesus Christ and to help those looking for clarity and inner peace in their lives and souls. Well-traveled and highly educated, Archbishop Sheen had a gift for making the complexities of the Scriptures clear without ever talking down to his audience. He used this gift in many capacities throughout his life: as a priest and bishop; as an educator at the Catholic University of America; and on radio and television where he had several wildly successful programs on theology and religion. His show Life is Worth Living ran from 1952 to 1957 and won him an Emmy Award for Most Outstanding Television Personality. Archbishop Sheen also wrote dozens of books during his life, at a pace of one or two per year. The Cross and the Beatitudes is one of his earlier works, first published in 1937. This special book draws a parallel between the first seven Beatitudes and Christ's final Seven Words. The Beatitudes are the blessings and instructions given forth by Jesus Christ at the Sermon on the Mount, which all begin "Blessed are." There are in fact eight Beatitudes, but Archbishop Sheen views the final as "confirmation and a declaration of all those that precede," in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas. The final Seven Words are the few sentences and phrases that Jesus Christ spoke while on the Cross. Assigning a chapter to each pairing of early Beatitude and final Word, Archbishop Sheen shows how Christ spoke the Word early in His Ministry, lived according to the Beatitudes throughout His life, and stayed faithful to their precepts on the Cross. As the Archbishop writes, "Our Lord began His Public Life on the Mount of the Beatitudes and closed it on the Mount of Calvary." And as this book shows us, his messages remained consistent throughout. The explanations of the Beatitudes contained in this work help the reader to apply these lessons to their own lives. While the words themselves are well-known to many-even those who haven't studied the Bible-their meaning takes some study to understand. The seven Beatitudes read as follows: 1."Blessed are the meek; for they shall possess the land." 2."Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy." 3."Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God." 4."Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." 5."Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice; for they shall have their fill." 6."Blessed are the peace-makers; for they shall be called the children of God." 7."Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted." And the Seven Words: 1."Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." 2."This day thou shalt be with me in paradise." 3."(Son) behold thy mother; Woman, behold thy son." 4."My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" 5."I thirst." 6."It is consummated." 7."Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." Archbishop Sheen highlights examples of each Beatitude, both as practiced in the life of Christ and from other stories in the Bible. By doing so, he shines a light on what each blessing means and how it can be applied to daily life.
