Data Management for Libraries by V. J. Suseela,V. Uma Pdf

A library is a system that consists of inter-dependent and interrelated sub-systems that generate huge amounts of data. It shares the common data within the system and across the systems. In modern integrated library systems, the bibliographic data is primarily connected to various other sub-systems. The back-end relational database management systems (RDBMS) are effective in organizing the data in standard formats while avoiding data redundancy. The data created from this process is usually made available to users for their retrieval. Thus, the entire cycle revolves around the growing information requirements of users. This book attempts to focus on creating and understanding the basic concepts of databases, library databases, DBMS/RDBMS functioning at the backend of LIS operations in building such databases while specifying the usefulness of DBMS approach in the effective retrieval of information from library catalogs, as well as from external online databases. The relevant strategies to be applied in information retrieval and useful tools are briefly dealt with, with information given on emerging trends in library data management. Libraries organize information and data is information, so it is natural that librarians should help people who need to find, organize, use, or store data. Organizations need evidence for decision making; data provides that evidence. Inventors and creators build upon data collected by others. All around us, people need data. Librarians can help increase the relevance of their library to the research and education mission of their institution by learning more about data and how to manage it. Data Management will guide readers through: Understanding data management basics and best practices. Using the reference interview to help with data management Writing data management plans for grants. Starting and growing a data management service. Finding collaborators inside and outside the library. Collecting and using data in different disciplines.

Electronic Library Management System (ELMS) by Alikira Richard Pdf

Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, printed single-sided, grade: -, Kampala International University - Dar-es-salaam College (computer studdies), course: none, language: English, comment: I undertook this project together with my student and friend mwadawa sadallar. She was very supportive especially in the design of the system. Finally she graduated with a degree of IT. i have a degree in computer science, masters of MIS, and am currently pursuing a PhD of information systems. Am a lecturer of Artificial intelligence, compiler construction, programing and information systems., abstract: For many years, universities & colleges have used file based / manual system to manage library use. Whereas this was quite efficient for some time, due to the expansion of the library and increase in the number of students, the system wastes a lot of time especially when searching for a particular book or resource. In response to this problem, more librarians have been added (employed), and this has escalated the cost of managing the library. This inefficiency, led to the study that was aimed at automating the book keeping function of the library. A study was carried out at Kampala International University Dar salaam Campus and it was discovered that the manual system had inefficiencies ranging from time wastage, high cost of operation in terms of human resources, long search time, data redundancy among others. A computer based library management system was developed using visual studio. The new system allows the user to add books into the system, search for books from the system database, track member information, manage borrowing among others. By automating library operations, the university will enjoy the advantages of using databases and transaction processing systems.

Managing Research Data by Graham Pryor Pdf

This title defines what is required to achieve a culture of effective data management offering advice on the skills required, legal and contractual obligations, strategies and management plans and the data management infrastructure of specialists and services. Data management has become an essential requirement for information professionals over the last decade, particularly for those supporting the higher education research community, as more and more digital information is created and stored. As budgets shrink and funders of research demand evidence of value for money and demonstrable benefits for society, there is increasing pressure to provide plans for the sustainable management of data. Ensuring that important data remains discoverable, accessible and intelligible and is shared as part of a larger web of knowledge will mean that research has a life beyond its initial purpose and can offer real utility to the wider community. This edited collection, bringing together leading figures in the field from the UK and around the world, provides an introduction to all the key data issues facing the HE and information management communities. Each chapter covers a critical element of data management: • Why manage research data? • The lifecycle of data management • Research data policies: principles, requirements and trends • Sustainable research data • Data management plans and planning • Roles and responsibilities – libraries, librarians and data • Research data management: opportunities and challenges for HEIs • The national data centres • Contrasting national research data strategies: Australia and the USA • Emerging infrastructure and services for research data management and curation in the UK and Europe Readership: This is essential reading for librarians and information professionals working in the higher education sector, the research community, policy makers and university managers. It will also be a useful introduction for students taking courses in information management, archivists and national library services.

#MakeoverMonday by Andy Kriebel,Eva Murray Pdf

Explore different perspectives and approaches to create more effective visualizations #MakeoverMonday offers inspiration and a giant dose of perspective for those who communicate data. Originally a small project in the data visualization community, #MakeoverMonday features a weekly chart or graph and a dataset that community members reimagine in order to make it more effective. The results have been astounding; hundreds of people have contributed thousands of makeovers, perfectly illustrating the highly variable nature of data visualization. Different takes on the same data showed a wide variation of theme, focus, content, and design, with side-by-side comparisons throwing more- and less-effective techniques into sharp relief. This book is an extension of that project, featuring a variety of makeovers that showcase various approaches to data communication and a focus on the analytical, design and storytelling skills that have been developed through #MakeoverMonday. Paging through the makeovers ignites immediate inspiration for your own work, provides insight into different perspectives, and highlights the techniques that truly make an impact. Explore the many approaches to visual data communication Think beyond the data and consider audience, stakeholders, and message Design your graphs to be intuitive and more communicative Assess the impact of layout, color, font, chart type, and other design choices Creating visual representation of complex datasets is tricky. There’s the mandate to include all relevant data in a clean, readable format that best illustrates what the data is saying—but there is also the designer’s impetus to showcase a command of the complexity and create multidimensional visualizations that “look cool.” #MakeoverMonday shows you the many ways to walk the line between simple reporting and design artistry to create exactly the visualization the situation requires.
