Life Skills, Sexual Maturation and Sanitation by Julie Stewart Pdf

Most pupils in eastern and southern Africa leave school before they have received an education equipping them with many essential life skills. There has therefore been much discussion of life skills as a key part of the primary curriculum; and about better equipping pupils to cope with unfavourable economic climates. They advocate that pupils acquire skills for survival after school, rather than the largely academic curriculum which is taught at present. This exploratory research from Kenya is part of a three-part study conducted in Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe. If focuses on the provision of teaching of life skills in primary schools, how the process of sexual maturation for boys and girls in handled in schools and at home; and explores whether there is a link between the lack of adequate sanitation protection for girls and dropout rates.

Together, the chapters constitute a concerted effort to build a responsive human rights approach ?from below and within'.

Perspectives on Coping Strategies for Menstrual and Premenstrual Distress by Parimal, B.S.,Gupta, Kavita Pdf

Women around the world are dealing with hormone and menstrual problems; evidence linking high levels of menstrual distress to harmful health effects continues to emerge. Premenstrual, or late luteal, menstrual misery is quite frequent, with many women reporting physiological and psychological symptoms linked with it. Additionally, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle have been linked to a variety of unpleasant mental and physical symptoms. Further study on the many challenges and health concerns associated with menstrual and premenstrual distress is required to provide women with appropriate support and treatment. Perspectives on Coping Strategies for Menstrual and Premenstrual Distress sheds light on the various distress tolerance approaches and coping strategies during menstrual and premenstrual phases and highlights some of the contemporary issues and problems faced by women in today’s era. Covering key topics such as alternative medicine, stressors, menstrual health, and cognitive coping, this reference work is ideal for healthcare professionals, nurses, policymakers, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, instructors, and students.

The Gender Perspective by Ingelore Welpe,Britta Thege Pdf

The constitutional and legislative framework within the Southern African Development Community provides a positive institutional environment to ensure mainstreaming gender concerns. However, the translation and implementation of the gender perspective is at times lacking. Both agenda setting as an instrument of change management and reorganisation procedures are not used enough in the fields of economy, organisation and health. These three areas are crucial partly due to their interconnectivity and also because of their vital importance to the successful sustainable development of SADC nation. This volume results from the findings of a conference hosted by the Institute of Women and Gender Studies, Kiel, and the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies, Pretoria.

Women, Law and Human Rights by Fareda Banda Pdf

Africa, with its mix of statute, custom and religion is at the centre of the debate about law and its impact on gender relations. This is because of the centrality of the gender question and its impact on the cultural relativism debate within human rights. It is therefore important to examine critically the role of law, broadly constructed, in African societies. The book focuses on women's experiences in the family. This is because the lives of women continue to be lived out largely in the private domain, where the right to privacy is used to conceal unequal treatment of women which is justified by invoking 'custom' and 'tradition'. The book shows how law and its interpretation is used to disenfranchise women, resulting in their being deprived of land and other property which they may have helped to accumulate. It also considers issues of violence within the home, reproductive rights and examines the issue of female genital cutting. The role of women in development is explored as is their participation in politics and the NGO sector. A major theme of the book is a consideration of the linkages of constitutional and international human rights norms with local values. This is done using feminist tools of analysis. The book considers the provisions of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Women which was adopted by the African Union in July 2003.

The Managed Body by Chris Bobel Pdf

The Managed Body productively complicates ‘menstrual hygiene management’ (MHM)—a growing social movement to support menstruating girls in the Global South. Bobel offers an invested critique of the complicated discourses of MHM including its conceptual and practical links with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) development sector, human rights and ‘the girling of development.’ Drawing on analysis of in-depth interviews, participant observations and the digital materials of NGOs and social businesses, Bobel shows how MHM frames problems and solutions to capture attention and direct resources to this highly-tabooed topic. She asserts that MHM organizations often inadvertently rely upon weak evidence and spectacularized representations to make the claim of a ‘hygienic crisis’ that authorizes rescue. And, she argues, the largely product-based solutions that follow fail to challenge the social construction of the menstrual body as dirty and in need of concealment. While cast as fundamental to preserving girls’ dignity, MHM prioritizes ‘technological fixes’ that teach girls to discipline their developing bodies vis a vis consumer culture, a move that actually accommodates more than it resists the core problem of menstrual stigma.
