Analysis and Assessment of Peak Lightning Current Probabilities at the NASA Kennedy Space Center by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Pdf

This technical memorandum presents a summary by the Electromagnetics and Aerospace Environments Branch at the Marshall Space Flight Center of lightning characteristics and lightning criteria for the protection of aerospace vehicles. Probability estimates are included for certain lightning strikes (peak currents of 200, 100, and 50 kA) applicable to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Space Shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, during rollout, on-pad, and boost/launch phases. Results of an extensive literature search to compile information on this subject are presented in order to answer key questions posed by the Space Shuttle Program Office at the Johnson Space Center concerning peak lightning current probabilities if a vehicle is hit by a lightning cloud-to-ground stroke. Vehicle-triggered lightning probability estimates for the aforementioned peak currents are still being worked. Section 4.5, however, does provide some insight on estimating these same peaks.Johnson, D. L. and Vaughan, W. Safety Design for Space Operations by Isabelle Rongier Pdf

This chapter covers all aspects of spaceport design for safety. This includes the choice of launch site, and explores the approach taken when choosing a location for the French Guiana Space Centre. Once the choice of geographical location has been made, the principles for the deployment these facilities in this location must be defined - the master plan. The chapter then looks at ground safety and the regulations concerned, and goes on to discuss the flight risk control within a launch site perimeter during a launch operation. Safety design for a spaceport includes limiting exposure of personnel in hazard zones. The location and design of buildings and roadways, and safety distances all need to be considered. Lightning protection systems are discussed in detail. Launch pad escape systems are essential for human spaceflight and the development of these systems is covered. The final section covers environmental protection.

Echoes Among the Stars: A Short History of the U.S. Space Program by Patrick J. Walsh Pdf

Emphasizing the importance of the space programme to the scientific, social and cultural history of the last half of the 20th century, this brief history celebrates the almost unimaginable technological leap that the space programme represents, a feat of teamwork, innovation, dedication and mastery unprecedented in the history of mankind. Walsh's narrative begins just before the Mercury programme, covers the original seven astronauts, the Gemini and Apollo programmes, through Skylab and up to the space shuttle. The glories and emotion of space exploration are presented against the backdrop of the Cold War, the presidential administrations of Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Carter, and other singificant events in US history. The positive accomplishments of the astronauts are put in context of an increasingly negative domestic situation in the '60s and '70s, the Bay of Pigs, civil rights, assassinations, growing involvement in and dissension about Vietnam, the Watergate scandal, and Nixon's resignation.

Lightning Protection of Aircraft by Franklin Fisher,J. Plumer Pdf

This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.
