That Special Knack by Douglas J. McGregor Pdf

Jake McCluskie is back... last time, he was the Repairman, and he fixed Time and helped flush a demon back to Oblivion. This time, McCluskie is the Redeemer. He must redeem three souls and find Hell's Codes for the Angel of Death. In order to do that, he has to go to Oblivion--into his enemy's cage. No wonder the Redeemer always dies. Satan straightened up in the chair and reached into his coat pocket. "Oh, I almost forgot. As promised, I read your ghost story book." In his hand he held a hard cover edition of my second book entitled: Limbo, Mississippi: A Ghost Story. The plastic cover book jacket had a library tag. "You borrowed it?" I asked. "From the library?" He grinned. "Okay, let's call it borrowed." "Aw, c'mon man, for the love of God, you're an archangel, would it kill you to break open your wallet and buy a copy?" "You're rich enough, McCluskie," he said, laughing. "Now, for the review." He made a sour face. "It was okay, nothing special, but okay. A passing grade." He tapped the book with a finger. "The problem is, your story is better than your writing. Hopefully, one day the writing will catch up." "Maybe you'll like my time travel book better. It's entitled: Broken Time. It just came out." He turned up his nose. "I don't know, McCluskie. One of your books is enough for me." "You should give this one a chance. The grade ten English classes at Rockaway High School will be reading it this semester." "Really?" he questioned, his smile beaming. "I can't believe it. Jacob McCluskie, part of modern literature." He shook his head, still smiling. "The great ones are turning over in their graves." "Thanks for your continued support." "Anytime," he said, laughing...

8 Crazy Moments in Time by Douglas J. McGregor Pdf

Three excerpts from the eight stories ... Antietam I had read the cornstalks ranged between six and ten feet high; from my perspective, the stalks looked higher. The light wind eerily swayed the late summer corn, and the first slants of daylight hit the field. The glint of the sun bouncing off the bayonets chilled my blood, and with utter fascination, I watched the Confederates move about in the green and yellow of the corn like gray ants. The Time Machine The dog grinned coyly, I know what youre thinking - maybe you can get to me - and if I were you, Id be thinking that too, but shovel or not, everything is drenched in gas, even the shovel. Rex allowed his words ample time to be absorbed before adding, Youre gonna catch on fire. That cant be avoided. No matter how smart you are, you cant think of a way out. Cuz there is no way out. You are trapped. The Last Cubicle A long pause ensured as he stared into her eyes, and then he quitely asked, Why am I sitting in the last cubicle with an angel? A sheet of paper appeared in her hand and she pointed at the letterhead. Spell D.E. Mood backwards.

Redneck Liberal by Chester M. Morgan Pdf

“Theodore Glimore Bilbo was, is, and evermore shall be God or Satan. He dwelled—dwells— in heaven or hell, but never in limbo.” So wrote A. Wigfall Green almost a quarter of a century ago, and so remains the popular perception of this colorful and controversial symbol of a faded era, though current opinion would tip the scales heavily in favor of the satanic and hellish. Theodore Bilbo is remembered almost exclusively as the archangel of white supremacy. His reputation as perhaps the vilest purveyor of racist rhetoric is richly deserved in light of his vehement opposition to the black civil rights movement that emerged during the last years of his career as United States senator from Mississippi. Yet, as Chester Morgan demonstrates in Redneck Liberal, the conventional image of Bilbo as merely a racist demagogue paints only half the picture. Bilbo served a full term in the Senate (1934-1940) before his political career was consumed by racism, and it is that period that is the focus of this study by Morgan. Bilbo’s first term in the Senate coincided with Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. Morgan provides a thorough treatment of Bilbo’s activities in Washington and his large role in Mississippi politics. In the Senate Bilbo consistently gave strong support to virtually all New Deal social and economic programs, such as relief for the unemployed, social security, public housing, and fair labor standards, while at the same time championing the cause of the nation’s small farmers in every way he could. His crude and often repulsive style may have antagonized the more sophisticated liberal academics and bureaucrats of the time, but his first-term voting record would have been the envy of any urban New Dealer. Morgan’s early chapters provide background on Bilbo’s long career prior to his election to the Senate (he served twice as governor of Mississippi, for instance) and also on the main trends in Mississippi politics from Reconstruction to the 1930s. An epilogue seeks to explain the well-known, virulently racist attitude of his final years. Throughout the book Morgan manages to capture the flamboyance of Bilbo’s personality and the vitality and intricacy of Mississippi politics. Redneck Liberal—only the second book on Bilbo ever to be published—draws heavily on Bilbo’s personal correspondence, the papers of Franklin Roosevelt, and other primary sources.

Killing Time Till I Die by Douglas J. McGregor Pdf

Jake McCluskie is back… Last time, he was the Redeemer, and he redeemed three souls and found Hell’s Codes for the Angel of Death. This time, McCluskie is Morning Star’s Dog, let off his leash to stop the Horseman Pestilence from unleashing a plague that will exterminate Mankind. “Something,” I said, “I don’t know what the hell it was—blocked the hole.” The Devil’s eyebrows twitched as he regarded me. His fingers moved, and a chair pulled away from the table. He opened his coat and sat. “What did this thing look like?” “Picture something covered in black hair about the size of a dump truck with arms and legs and a head. It picked me up, sniffed me, and then tossed me halfway across the warehouse. All I have to say is yes, “ouch’, it sure hurt when I hit the wall.” The Devil sighed. “Stop complaining. Do you have any more of that rot-gut Cognac? Because I need a drink.” You knew this creature had to be bad when even the Devil needed a drink. “I need a drink too.” I climbed to my feet, my back and ribs aching. “You drank all the Cognac last night. I’ve got beers in the fridge.” I hobbled to the kitchen, dug two cans of Bud from the fridge and plunked down his can in front of him. “There you go, 24 ounces of Bud.” He sipped on his can of beer, and grimaced. “Why don’t you have a stocked liquor cabinet? Even do-gooder Catholics drink. And the Mrs. has blown so you won’t get nagged because you have a few bottles of hooch lying around.” “I wasn’t expecting company, and may I ask—how bad is this creature?” “Let’s just say this swill I’m drinking isn’t making it.” “May I have clarification on how ‘bad’ it is? “The word ‘bad’ doesn’t even come close to describing it. It’s probably the worse case scenario you could think of.” I took a hit of beer. “Thanks for sugar coating it.” “A team of bakery chefs couldn’t sugar coat this disaster.” “Do you know what crawled out of Oblivion? I mean, aside from Luther.” “It’s Mohana,” the Devil said flatly. “Mohana of the Chaos Hold.”

Beyond The Limbo Silence by Elizabeth Nunez Pdf

“[A] haunting story . . . Bears witness to the struggles of an African Caribbean woman as she seeks to find her place in America without selling her soul.” –BEBE MOORE CAMPBELL, Author of Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine When Sara Edgehill is given a scholarship to leave Trinidad and attend a college in Wisconsin, she is thrilled. America, the one she has seen in the movies, is a land of dreams, prosperity, and equality. Not like Trinidad, where her parents cast disappointed glances her way because she wasn’t born with lighter-colored skin. But when Sara leaves her island’s brilliant green fields and warm sparkling waters for the pale cornfields of the Midwest, the ties to her home and her past grip her as strongly as America’s cold, winter winds. For as soon as Sara sets foot in her new home, she must make tough decisions. Wanting desperately to fit in, she begins to understand that in America, the color lines run deeper than they did even in Trinidad. And as Sara forms ties with two other West Indian students–the beguiling, haunted Courtney and the passionate, vivacious Sam–she is irrevocably pulled into the very center of America’s exploding civil rights movement.

Beware of Limbo Dancers by Roy Reed Pdf

This witty, wide-ranging memoir from Roy Reed--a native Arkansan who became a reporter for the New York Times--begins with tales of the writer's formative years growing up in Arkansas and the start of his career at the legendary Arkansas Gazette. Reed joined the New York Times in 1965 and was quickly thrust into the chaos of the Selma, Alabama, protest movement and the historical interracial march to Montgomery. His story then moves from days of racial violence to the political combat of Washington. Reed covered the Johnson White House and the early days of the Nixon administration as it wrestled with the competing demands of black voters and southern resistance to a new world. The memoir concludes with engaging postings from New Orleans and London and other travels of a reporter always on the lookout for new people, old ways, good company, and fresh outrages.
