Liming of Acidified Surface Waters by Lennart Henrikson,Y.W. Brodin Pdf

Acidification is one of the most serious environmental problems - especially in Sweden, which suffers most from the consequences of acid rain. Besides international negotiations to reduce sulphur emissions - 85% of the acid load on Sweden can be traced to emissions from outside the country itself - the Swedish Government has employed large-scale, operative liming activities to counteract acidification of surface waters. The scientific results show that - although acidification cannot be solved by liming alone - the measures taken resulted in substantial improvements to around 8,000 Swedish lakes and watercourses. The idea is that other countries affected by acidification may also profit from this experience.

Practical Guide to Managing Acidic Surface Waters and Their Fisheries by Robert W. Brocksen,Michael D. Marcus,Harvey Olem Pdf

Practical Guide to Managing Acidic Surface Waters and Their Fisheries explains how to manage acidic surface waters to preserve or restore fisheries. The work gives readers the basic tools to carry out a variety of surface water management activities. Topics include biological productivity and recovery, costs of liming, fish stocking, lake liming techniques, nutrients, regulations and permits, sampling, stream liming techniques, water quality analysis, and watershed liming techniques. The book will be a useful reference for fishing club managers, state and local government personnel, lake association managers, and others responsible for maintaining lakes and streams that may be affected by acidity from any source.

Experimental Watershed Liming Study by Charles T. Driscoll Pdf

This volume is a series of papers summarizing the results of the Experimental Watershed Liming Study (EWLS). The EWLS was initiated in 1989 to investigate the application of calcium carbonate (limestone) to upland and wetland forests as a strategy to mitigate the acidity of lake water and improve fisheries. Woods Lake, in the Adirondack region of New York U. S. A. , is the site of long-term studies of surface water acidification. This whole-ecosystem manipulation was designed to be a comprehensive evaluation of the chemical and biological response of uplands, wetlands and surface waters to calcium carbonate treatment. A multidisciplinary project team conducted this investigation, including researchers from Clarkson University, Cornell University, the Institute for Ecosystem Studies, Smith College, EWLS was conceived by Syracuse University and U. S. Geological Survey. The Bob Brocksen and others from Living Lakes Inc. and Don Porcella of the Electric Power Research Institute. Financial support for the EWLS was provided by Living Lakes Inc. , the Electric Power Research Institute, the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U. S. Geological Survey. vii Biogeochemistry 32: 143-174, 1996. © 1996 Kluwer Academic Publishers. The Lakes Handbook by Patrick O'Sullivan,C. S. Reynolds Pdf

Continuing concern about water supply and quality, ecosystem sustainability and restoration demands that the modern approach to the management of lakes and reservoirs should be based on a sound understanding of the application of the scientific and ecological principles that underlie freshwater processes. The Lakes Handbook provides an up-to-date overview of the application of ecologically sound approaches, methods and tools using experience gained around the world for an understanding of lakes and their management. Volume one of the Handbook addresses the physical and biological aspects of lakes pertinent to lake management, emphasising those aspects particularly relevant to large, still bodies of water. Volume two then considers lake management, with particular emphasis on sustainability, restoration and rehabilitation. This handbook will be invaluable to ecologists, environmental scientists, physical geographers and hydrologists involved in limnological research, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students looking for authoritative reviews of the key areas of limnological study.

Acid Deposition and the Acidification of Soils and Waters by J.O. Reuss,D.W. Johnson Pdf

The majority of this book was written in 1983-84 while the senior author was a Visiting Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We believe that the approach to the problem of acid deposition effects on soils and waters developed during this collaboration contains ele ments that are significantly different from most prior work in this area. Some of the material and the software used in the development of these concepts stem from earlier individual efforts of the authors. However, what we believe to be the more significant concepts concerning the processes by which alkalinity may be developed in acid soil solutions, and by which acid deposition may contrib ute to the loss of this alkalinity, were the result of this collaboration. The ultimate usefulness of these concepts in understanding and dealing with various aspects of the problems associated with acid deposition cannot be adequately gauged at the present time. They must first withstand tests of con sistency with available observation, and of direct experimentation. It is our hope that dissemination through this book will facilitate this process within the scientific community. The authors wish to thank the administration of the Environmental Science Division at ORNL, and the College of Agricultural Sciences at Colorado State University for their support in arranging this collaboration. We also wish to express our appreciation for the financial support provided by EPA. Personal thanks are due to Dr.

Acid Rain by Basil John Mason Pdf

The causes and consequences of acid rain are subjects of widespread concern and controversy. However the effects of acid deposition on the chemistry of lakes and streams, and on the survival of fish and other aquatic life, have been greatly clarified by the results of a recent Anglo-Scandinavian surface waters research program. This book presents a concise, nonspecialist account of the results and their implications by the director of the program. Based on studies conducted throughout the United Kingdom and northern Europe, the book includes chapters on emissions, transport, and deposition of acid pollution; hydrochemical studies in catchments; catchment process studies; catchment manipulation experiments; the role of hydrology and soil chemistry; palaeolimnological studies; the toxic effects of acidification on fish and other aquatic life; and catchment modelling studies. The highly interdisciplinary nature of the research should appeal to a wide range of scientists and to policy-makers interested in acid rain and its consequences. It is also aimed at postgraduates and third-year undergraduate students in the environmental sciences.

Acid Rain and Acid Waters by Gwyneth Parry Howells Pdf

Provides a basic account of the acid rain story and covers the social and historical background to the effects of emissions on health and the evironment. It provides a wide-ranging but integrated account of this issue which has been of environmental concern for several dcades and, now that control strategies have been enacted in Europe and North America, the author gives consideration to the time-scale for recovery of an acid-damaged ecosystem and the alternatives available.
