Liu Yi and the Dragon Princess by Zhongxian Shang Pdf
This is an adaptation of the thirteenth-century zaju play Liu Yi Chuan Shu, which was itself based on an eighth-century fairy tale about a failed examination candidate's encounter with a shepherdess in distress who turns out to be the youngest daughter of the Dragon King of Lake Dongting. The young man's help is rewarded with riches, immortality and marriage to the beautiful princess. It is a wish-fulfillment fantasy written with charm and a certain ironical edge. This adaptation consists of the freely-translated lyrics of the zaju with new, original dialogue, including an on-stage narrator. There is a long introduction with synopses of the Chinese text of the zaju and the original story it was based on. There is also an appendix explaining the use of "padding words" in zaju.
Liu Yi meets the princess after he fails the national exam to become a high offical in the emperor's court. He is so frustrated that he decides to meet a friend before going home. Unexpectedly his horse takes him to a strange place where a very beautiful shepherdess is looking after her sheep. Attracted by her beauty Liu Yi discovers the true identity of the lady and decides to help her return to her parents.
Liu Yi miraculously travels to the luxurious place of the Dragon King under the water of the lake. He delivers the letter from the Dragon Princess to her father who is overcome with remorse for having ignored his daughter. The Dragon King is full of gratitude to Liu Yi who has faithfully brought the letter from the world of humans. Liu Yi is invited to a feast at the palace, where he is surprised and pleased to find that the beautiful princess has already somehow returned to the palace.

In traditional China, upper-class literati were inevitably strongly influenced by Confucian doctrine and rarely touched upon such topics as love and women in their writings. It was not until the mid-Tang, a generation or two after the An Lushan rebellion, that literary circles began to engage in overt discussion of the issues of love and women, through the use of the newly emerging genres of zhiguai and chuanqi fiction. The debate was carried out with an unprecedented enthusiasm, since the topics were considered to be the key to understanding the crisis in Chinese civilization. This book examines the repertoire of chuanqi and zhiguai written during the Six Dynasties and Tang periods and analyzes the key themes, topics, and approaches found in these tales, which range from expressions of male fantasy, sympathy, fear, and anxiety, to philosophical debate on the place of the feminine in patriarchal Chinese society.
