The Diet of John the Baptist by James A. Kelhoffer Pdf

James A. Kelhoffer offers a comprehensive analysis of Mark 1:6c par. Matt 3:4c in its socio-historical context, the Synoptic gospels and subsequent Christian interpretation. The first chapter surveys various anecdotes about John's food in the Synoptic gospels and notes that there has never been a consensus in scholarship concerning John's locusts and wild honey. Chapters 2 and 3 address locusts as human food and assorted kinds of wild honey in antiquity. Chapter 4 considers the different meanings of this diet for the historical Baptist, Mark, and Matthew. Contemporary anthropological and nutritional data shed new light on John's experience as a locust gatherer and assess whether these foods could have actually sustained him in the wilderness. The last chapter demonstrates that the most prevalent interpretation of the Baptist's diet, from the third through the sixteenth centuries, hails John's simple wilderness provisions as a model for believers to emulate.

God of All Things by Andrew Wilson Pdf

Abstract theology is overrated, for God can be found in even the most ordinary of things. Jesus used things like a lily, sparrow, and sheep to teach about the kingdom of God. And in the Old Testament, God repeatedly describes himself and his saving work in relation to physical things such as a rock, horn, or eagle. In God of All Things, pastor and author Andrew Wilson invites you to rediscover God in this way, too--through ordinary, everyday things. He explores the idea of a material world and presents a variety of created marvels that reveal the gospel in everyday life and fuel worship and joy in God--marvels like: Dust: the image of God Horns: the salvation of God Donkeys: the peace of God Water: the life of God Viruses: the problem of God Cities: the kingdom of God God of All Things will leave you with a deeper understanding of Scripture, the world you live in, and the God who made it all.

Bad Beekeeping by Ron Miksha Pdf

A million pounds of honey. Produced by a billion bees! This memoir reconstructs the life of a young man from Pennsylvania as he drops into the bald prairie badlands of southern Saskatchewan. He buys a honey ranch and keeps the bees that make the honey. But he also spends winters in Florida swamps, nurse-maid to ten thousand dainty queen bees. From the dusty Canadian prairie to the thick palmetto swamps of the American south, the reader meets with simple folks who shape the protagonist's character - including a Cree rancher with three sons playing NHL hockey, a Hutterite preacher who yearns to roam the globe, a reclusive bee-eating homesteader, and a grey-headed widow who grows grapefruit, plays a nasty game of scrabble, and lives with four vicious dogs. Encompassing a ten-year period, this true story evolves from the earnest inexperience of the young man as he learns an art and builds a business. Carefully researched natural biology runs counterpoint to human social activities. Bee craft serves as the setting for expositions that contrast American and Canadian lifestyles, while exemplifying the harsh reality of a man working with and against the physical environment.

Locusts and Wild Honey by John Burroughs Pdf

The honey-bee goes forth from the hive in spring like the dove from Noah's ark, and it is not tillafter many days that she brings back the olive leaf, which in this case is a pellet of golden pollenupon each hip, usually obtained from the alder or the swamp willow. In a country where maplesugar is made the bees get their first taste of sweet from the sap as it flows from the spiles, or as itdries and is condensed upon the sides of the buckets. They will sometimes, in their eagerness, comeabout the boiling-place and be overwhelmed by the steam and the smoke. But bees appear to bemore eager for bread in the spring than for honey: their supply of this article, perhaps, does not keepas well as their stores of the latter; hence fresh bread, in the shape of new pollen, is diligently soughtfor. My bees get their first supplies from the catkins of the willows. How quickly they find them out!If but one catkin opens anywhere within range, a bee is on hand that very hour to rifle it, and it is amost pleasing experience to stand near the hive some mild April day and see them come pouring inwith their little baskets packed with this first fruitage of the spring. They will have new bread now;they have been to mill in good earnest; see their dusty coats, and the golden grist they bring homewith them. When a bee brings pollen into the hive he advances to the cell in which it is to be deposited andkicks it off, as one might his overalls or rubber boots, making one foot help the other; then he walksoff without ever looking behind him; another bee, one of the indoor hands, comes along and rams itdown with his head and packs it into the cell, as the dairymaid packs butter into a firkin with a ladle. The first spring wild-flowers, whose sly faces among the dry leaves and rocks are so welcome, arerarely frequented by the bee. The anemone, the hepatica, the bloodroot, the arbutus, the numerousviolets, the spring beauty, the corydalis, etc., woo all lovers of nature, but seldom woo the honeyloving bee. The arbutus, lying low and keeping green all winter, attains to perfume and honey, butonly once have I seen it frequented by bees. The first honey is perhaps obtained from the flowers of the red maple and the golden willow. Thelatter sends forth a wild, delicious perfume. The sugar maple blooms a little later, and from its silkentassels a rich nectar is gathered. My bees will not label these different varieties for me, as I reallywish they would. Honey from the maple, a tree so clean and wholesome, and full of such virtuesevery way, would be something to put one's tongue to. Or that from the blossoms of the apple, thepeach, the cherry, the quince, the currant, -one would like a card of each of these varieties to notetheir peculiar qualities. The apple-blossom is very important to the bees. A single swarm has beenknown to gain twenty pounds in weight during its continuance. Bees love the ripened fruit, too, andin August and September will such themselves tipsy upon varieties such as the sops-of-wine.The interval between the blooming of the fruit-trees and that of the clover and the raspberry isbridged over in many localities by the honey locust. What a delightful summer murmur these treessend forth at this season! I know nothing about the quality of the honey, but it ought to keep well

The Gospel of Matthew by John Nolland Pdf

Having devoted the past ten years of his life to research for this major new work, John Nolland gives us a commentary on the Gospel of Matthew that engages with a notable range of Matthean scholarship and offers fresh interpretations of the dominant Gospel in the history of the church. Without neglecting the Gospel's sources or historical background, Nolland places his central focus on the content and method of Matthew's story. His work explores Matthew's narrative technique and the inner logic of the unfolding text, giving full weight to the Jewish character of the book and its differences from Mark's presentation of parallel material. While finding it unlikely that the apostle Matthew himself composed the book, Nolland does argue that Matthew's Gospel reflects the historical ministry of Jesus with considerable accuracy, and he brings to the table new evidence for an early date of composition. Including accurate translations based on the latest Greek text, detailed verse-by-verse comments, thorough bibliographies for each section, and an array of insightful critical approaches, Nolland's Gospel of Matthew will stimulate students, preachers, and scholars seeking to understand more fully Matthew's presentation of the gospel narrative.
