Lord, Stand By Me by Eula Youngblood Pdf

LORD, STAND BY ME This book is more like a series of novellas, than a continuous novel; for it is the strange recorded moments of an eight year old child remembering tales she overheard her adult relatives, and their friends tell of hardships, rape murder, and other horrific crimes that occurred in the early forties in the deep South.

Stand by Me by Neta Jackson Pdf

Sometimes the person you most need is the one least like you. Kathryn Davies is a bright young woman from a prominent Phoenix family. But after making a leap of faith at a Christian music fest, dropping out of med school, and moving to inner city Chicago, her family all but disowns her. When Kat discovers SouledOut Community Church, she longs to become a part of the multicultural church family. But her tendency to immediately say whatever sheÆs thinking steps on the toes of nearly everyone she meetsùespecially Avis Douglass. Avis has a strong faith, is the principal of one of ChicagoÆs highest performing elementary schools, and is a founding member of SouledOut. But the countryÆs economic downturn has thrown both her and her husbandÆs jobs in question. And Avis hasnÆt heard from her youngest daughter in monthsùan estrangement that gnaws at her every day. Where is God in this? KatÆs flamboyant zeal for living a ôradicalö Christian life is a stark contrast to AvisÆs more reserved faith. But in GodÆs timing, the two women discover they need each other in ways neither of them expected.

Blues & Gospel Records, 1890-1943 by Robert M. W. Dixon,John Godrich,Howard Rye Pdf

Since its first edition, in 1964, Dixon and Godrich's Blues and Gospel Records has been dubbed 'the bible' for collectors of pre-war African-American music. It provides an exhaustive listing of all recordings made up to the end of 1943 in a distinctively African-American musical style, excluding those customarily classed as jazz (which are the subject of separate discographies). The book covers recordings made for the commercial market (whether issued at the time or not) and also recordings made for the Library of Congress Archive of Folk Song and similar bodies -- about 20,000titles in all, by more than 3,000 artists. For each recording session, full details are given of: artist credit, accompaniment, place and date of recording, titles, issuing company and catalogue numbers, matrix numbers and alternate takes. There are also short accounts of the major 'race labels',which recorded blues and gospel material, and a complete list of field trips to the south by travelling recording units. Howard Rye has joined the original compilers for this thoroughly revised fourth edition. The scope has been enlarged by the addition of about 150 new artists, in addition tonewly discovered recordings by other artists. Early cylinder recordings of gospel music, from the 1890s, are also included for the first time. Previous editions of this work were applauded for their completeness, accuracy, and reliability. This has now been enhanced by the addition of newinformation from record labels and from record company files, and by listening to a wide selection of titles, and detailed cross-checking.

How Sweet the Sound by Horace Clarence Boyer Pdf

In How Sweet the Sound, music historian Horace Clarence Boyer charts gospel's emergence as a discrete musical style in the early 1900s. He details its heyday in the years from 1945 to 1955 and describes its development through the 1960s, when the soulful strains of the once-churchbound music could be heard in the finest concert halls in the country. A gospel singer himself, Boyer brings added insight to the story of this indigenous American art form and the people who created it. He explains the various styles and stages of the music, and refers to more than a hundred of gospel's finest, from Thomas A. Dorsey and Mahalia Jackson to the Soul Stirrers and Aretha Franklin. Rare performance photographs and backstage studies by Lloyd Yearwood illustrate Boyer's text. --From publisher's description.
