Reclaiming and Redefining American Exhibitions of Russian Art by Roann Barris Pdf

This book examines the history of American exhibitions of Russian art in the twentieth century in the context of the Cold War. Because this history reflects changes in museological theory and the role of governments in facilitating or preventing intercultural cooperation, it uncovers a story that is far more complex than a chronological listing of exhibition names and art works. Roann Barris considers questions of stylistic appropriations and influences and the role of museum exhibitions in promoting international and artistic exchanges. Barris reveals that Soviet and American exchanges in the world of art were extensive and persistent despite political disagreements before, during, and after the Cold War. It also reveals that these early exhibitions communicated contradictory and historically invalid pictures of the Russian or Soviet avant-garde. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, museum studies, and Russian studies.

The Lost Vanguard by Richard Pare,Jean-Louis Cohen Pdf

"This book includes seventy-three structures, starting with the Shabolovka Radio Tower in Moscow and concluding with the Lenin Mausoleum. In between are buildings from all over Moscow (where the greatest concentration of modernist buildings still remains), St. Petersburg, Ivanovo, Ekaterinburg, Kiev, Kharkov, Zaporozhe, Nizhi Novgorod, Sochi, and Baku. The buildings range from grand projects such as Gasprom in Kharkov to a modest bus shelter in Sochi, a rare survivor by an unknown architect." "In an essay, architectural historian Jean-Louis Cohen surveys the history of the period, providing a context for the emergence of this startling new architecture in parallel to contemporary experiments in Europe."--BOOK JACKET.

The Prairies Lost and Found by Leonard B. Kuffert Pdf

"We lose and find all the time. We can forget, apprehend or comprehend our surroundings several times each day. Both losing and finding, forgetting and rediscovering the natural and human traces on the prairies might seem like an impossibility. Have we not recorded our impressions and images of prairie life faithfully? Are we not standing on the shoulders of (prairie) giants? One kind of prairie, grain elevators, have been disappearing from the North American prairies for about a generation, and yet they have become (I would argue even more vividly than in the days before they started to disappear) an iconic symbol of a place which is less and less like its imagined past. Our memories (both individual and collective) adjust to such absences by canonizing vanishing saints before it really is too late. We lose the thing and find – we like to think – its essence. We remember artistic renderings of prairie people, landscapes and stories, reading Margaret Laurence’s novels or W. L. Morton’s history, but we cannot reproduce the pictures and words at will. We know the countours of their labours just the same. We forget, or at least under-advertise, the fast that the Prairie (however it might be divided by provincial or international borders) is also an urban place. We think less often of the fact that we have a transantional prairies, in which an awareness of divergent national pasts and presents is necessary. To acknowledge these complexities is to know, to reclaim and indeed to find the prairies."--BOOK JACKET.

British Warship Losses in the Age of Sail by David Hepper Pdf

This significant new reference book provides a complete list of the ships of the Royal Navy which were lost at sea in the age of sail. Arranged in chronological order, it includes outline details of each vessel lost and the circumstances of her loss. 1649 is the start date, which coincides with the execution of Charles I and that time when the Royal Navy entered a new phase as an instrument of state: the launch of the steam-powered and iron-hulled Warrior in 1860 effectively marks the end of the great era of the wooden-hulled sailing warship. Life at sea in the age of sail was a hazardous pursuit, and there were many reasons for a ship being lost. A correspondent to the Nautical Magazine in 1841 detailed some fifty reasons and causes, from being short of crew, abandonment without sufficient cause, the poor condition of a ship, incorrectness of charts, poor dead-reckoning as well as less obvious reasons such as ‘the presence of captains’ wives and other women.’ Navigational error, particularly before the chronometer allowed for the accurate calculation of longitude, was a common reason, while poor weather in the form of fog or gales was an obvious peril. So many ships suffered the melancholy fate of lonely disappearance – overwhelmed by storm and sea, and witnessed by none. Collisions and fire feature regularly as does, of course, loss to the enemy. Each entry includes details of the ship, its name and type, tonnage and dimensions, origin and place of build, the circumstances of the loss, the date and a list of the main references used. All this material is presented here in a single and highly accessible volume, and represents a major milestone both in naval research and publishing; it offers too a fund of fascinating and compelling stories of maritime misadventure. Praise for the author's previous work: ‘This volume is an amazing encyclopaedic, catalogue of British warships lost between 1920 and 1982 It is strongly recommended to historians, authors, researchers and all those with an interest in the history of the Royal Navy and the Second World War.’ -Scuttlebut Magazine
