They Played for the Love of the Game by Frank M. White Pdf

A century before Kirby Puckett led the Minnesota Twins to World Series championships, Minnesota was home to countless talented African American baseball players, yet few of them are known to fans today. During the many decades that Major League Baseball and its affiliates imposed a strict policy of segregation, black ballplayers in Minnesota were relegated to a haphazard array of semipro leagues, barnstorming clubs, and loose organizations of all-black teams—many of which are lost to history. They Played for the Love of the Game recovers that history by sharing stories of African American ballplayers in Minnesota, from the 1870s to the 1960s, through photos, artifacts, and spoken histories passed through the generations. Author Frank White’s own father was one of the top catchers in the Twin Cities in his day, a fact that White did not learn until late in life. While the stories tell of denial, hardship, and segregation, they are highlighted by athletes who persevered and were united by their love of the sport.

Lost in a Good Game by Pete Etchells Pdf

'Etchells writes eloquently ... A heartfelt defence of a demonised pastime' The Times 'Once in an age, a piece of culture comes along that feels like it was specifically created for you, the beats and words and ideas are there because it is your life the creator is describing. Lost In A Good Game is exactly that. It will touch your heart and mind. And even if Bowser, Chun-li or Q-Bert weren't crucial parts of your youth, this is a flawless victory for everyone' Adam Rutherford When Pete Etchells was 14, his father died from motor neurone disease. In order to cope, he immersed himself in a virtual world - first as an escape, but later to try to understand what had happened. Etchells is now a researcher into the psychological effects of video games, and was co-author on a recent paper explaining why WHO plans to classify 'game addiction' as a danger to public health are based on bad science and (he thinks) are a bad idea. In this, his first book, he journeys through the history and development of video games - from Turing's chess machine to mass multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft- via scientific study, to investigate the highs and lows of playing and get to the bottom of our relationship with games - why we do it, and what they really mean to us. At the same time, Lost in a Good Game is a very unusual memoir of a writer coming to terms with his grief via virtual worlds, as he tries to work out what area of popular culture we should classify games (a relatively new technology) under.

“. . . I think it’s time to move on,” he reported coldly. “If you want, I could drive you home now. We don’t need to be in each other’s company any longer than necessary.” “But you said you liked me.” I needed clarification. It didn’t make sense. “I did like you. Before. It passed. I was still unsure on what I had done. He drove me home, and I walked myself to my door. He didn’t even wait until I got inside. . . So we’ve come back to the beginning. My life was over. . . Suffice to say, the rest of August I spent in my room, depressed. Was that what a broken heart felt like? Did I really fall in love with him? I don’t think so, but I was definitely in very deep like. Anna Marks was trying to start over her senior year at Rocksfield Prep School until she discovered that the new good-looking transfer student may be her recent ex. Could she really ignore him and move on? Or will he make her realize not everything is what it seems?

The Sun in My Palm by Parneet Jaggi Pdf

The Sun in my Palm is a collection of poems born from the depths of contemplation and introspection. The poems explore the ineffable connections that bind souls together, transcending the physical and touching the sublime. Nestled within these verses is anundercurrent of detachment, recognition that the true nature of reality often eludes us when we cling too tightly to the ephemeral. It is within this detachment that the essence of truth begins to reveal itself, like a hidden gem awaiting discovery. The spirituality permeating the poems is not bound by dogma or doctrine, but a transcendent exploration of the connection between the self and the universe. The title encapsulates the radiant core of what lies within. Poetry is our miniature sun- asource of warmth, illumination, and energy within our reach. In the palm of our hands, we hold the capacity to create and experience worlds, emotions, and epiphanies.

Power Play by Jenny Adams Pdf

The game of chess reached western Europe by the year 1000, and within several generations it had become one of the most popular pastimes ever. Both men and women, and even priests played the game despite the Catholic Church's repeated prohibitions. Characters in countless romances, chansons de geste, and moral tales of the eleventh through twelfth centuries also played chess, which often symbolized romantic attraction or sexual consummation. In Power Play, Jenny Adams looks to medieval literary representations to ask what they can tell us both about the ways the game changed as it was naturalized in the West and about the society these changes reflected. In its Western form, chess featured a queen rather than a counselor, a judge or bishop rather than an elephant, a knight rather than a horse; in some manifestations, even the pawns were differentiated into artisans, farmers, and tradespeople with discrete identities. Power Play is the first book to ask why chess became so popular so quickly, why its pieces were altered, and what the consequences of these changes were. More than pleasure was at stake, Adams contends. As allegorists and political theorists connected the moves of the pieces to their real-life counterparts, chess took on important symbolic power. For these writers and others, the game provided a means to figure both human interactions and institutions, to envision a civic order not necessarily dominated by a king, and to imagine a society whose members acted in concert, bound together by contractual and economic ties. The pieces on the chessboard were more than subjects; they were individuals, playing by the rules.
