Loving, Supporting, and Caring for the Cancer Patient by Stan Goldberg Pdf

At least once in your life someone will say to you, “I have cancer,” and when she says the three words, you may struggle with a response. If a loved one or friend hasn’t informed you of a cancer diagnosis, it’s only a matter of time until they will. Every year fourteen million people worldwide learn they are living with or may die from this insidious illness. The uncertainty of cancer causes anxiety in those diagnosed and feelings of inadequacy in loved ones and friends who want to help. When someone says “I have cancer,” what will you say? More importantly, what will you do? In Loving, Supporting, and Caring for the Cancer Patient, readers will learn specific ways of going beyond the response “I’m so sorry,” and practical behaviors that will ease a loved one or friend’s journey. They range from being specific immediately after a diagnosis, to honoring their loved one or friend at the moment of passing. Based on Stan Goldberg’s own cancer journey, thirty years of counseling and coaching people living with cancer and their loved ones, and as a bedside volunteer in four hospices over eight years, the book is filled with poignant accounts of clients and patients, personal reflections, and age-old stories filled with infinite wisdom.

Cancer Care for the Whole Patient by Institute of Medicine,Board on Health Care Services,Committee on Psychosocial Services to Cancer Patients/Families in a Community Setting Pdf

Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer--including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life--cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Comprehensive Guide to Supportive and Palliative Care for Patients with Cancer by Janet L. Abrahm,Bethany-Rose Daubman,Molly Collins Pdf

Leading palliative care experts illustrate how you can improve both communication with cancer patients and their quality of life. For more than twenty years, this guide has been the go-to resource for busy practicing oncology and palliative care clinicians. This fourth edition, now titled Comprehensive Guide to Supportive and Palliative Care for Patients with Cancer, provides physicians, advanced practice clinicians, and patients and their families with detailed information and advice for alleviating the suffering of cancer patients and their loved ones. Drawing on the work of experts who have developed revolutionary approaches to symptom management and palliative care, as well as on lessons learned during her decades as a teacher and clinician, Dr. Janet L. Abrahm and her coauthors illustrate how to help patients and families understand their prognosis, communicate their care preferences, and minimize their distress. This edition reflects important updates in the field while addressing the informational needs of a broader market of health care providers, including social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, bereavement counselors, and chaplains. This new edition features three new chapters—"Spiritual Care in Palliative Care," "Psychological Considerations," and "Bereavement"—as well as specific guidelines about • advance care planning at all phases of cancer • understanding complex family dynamics and communication challenges • partnering with interpreters in the care of patients and family members with limited English-language proficiency • special considerations to take into account for LGBTQ+ patients and their loved ones • caring for patients who have a serious mental illness along with a cancer diagnosis • nonpharmacologic management of pain and other symptoms associated with cancer or its treatment The book features self-reflective exercises that encourage readers to consider their own biases before having discussions with patients and family members, as well as numerous patient stories that illustrate the techniques and insights clinicians can use to provide holistic, multidimensional care for a diverse cancer patient population.

The Art of Caregiving by Michael S. Barry Pdf

When catastrophic illness strikes, someone close to the patient—a spouse, child, grandchild, or close friend—inevitably joins that patient on the arduous journey through treatment and recovery. Surprisingly, health-care professionals largely acknowledge that personal caregivers have more influence over the patient’s experience in the short and long term than any medical professional. That means that if you find yourself in the role of caregiver, you are—or can be—one of the greatest weapons in your loved one’s fight against cancer. Now Dr. Michael S. Barry shows you how to create moments filled with positive energy, hope, abundant love, occasional laughter, and people (including you) who sparkle with a life-giving, joyful attitude, even amidst grave illness.

8 Steps to Getting Real with Cancer by Marianne C. McDonough Pdf

8 Steps to Getting Real with Cancer is a practical step-by-step guide for newly-diagnosed cancer patients and those who love them. Empowerment is the key theme throughout this book as Marianne McDonough, a breast cancer survivor, addresses the critical first weeks following diagnosis when patients suddenly face wrenching decisions, intense stress, and their own mortality. The book is divided into 8 Steps that coincide with the hard questions patients ask themselves, such as: * What do I know about cancer and believe to be true about myself as a cancer patient? * How shall I interact with others, especially my family, friends, and medical providers? * How can I select the best treatment protocol? * How do I feel about possibly dying? * Where is God in all of this? * What am I afraid of? * How do I deal with the stress? * Do I dare hope for a future? Using specific examples from her own cancer journey, McDonough employs an easy-to-read, three-fold format: myths versus truths statements, "how to" applications, and survivors attitudes. Additionally, she debunks "easy platitudes" that impose unfair expectations and standards on patients suddenly struggling with life and death matters. With palpable compassion, the author writes in a transparent, conversational style. Newly-diagnosed patients, she says, have enough stress while making monumental decisions, so she invites them to rest their souls, find strength in their own beliefs, and prepare well not only for effective treatment but also for fully vibrant survivorship. The primary audience for this book is cancer patients, especially newly diagnosed, and support people who love and care for them. Other readers include medical, counseling, and ministerial professionals. This book is an excellent resource and addition to hospital gift shops, oncology and ob/gyn departments, and church book stores.
