Measurement of the pep and CNO Solar Neutrino Interaction Rates in Borexino by Stefano Davini Pdf

Solar neutrino experiments have proved to be sensitive tools to test both astrophysical and elementary particle physics models. Neutrinos coming from the Sun offer a window into the inner workings of our star. Both the first evidence and the first discoveries of neutrino oscillations have come from experiments which detected neutrinos from the Sun. The Borexino experiment at Laboratory Nazionali del Gran Sasso is designed to perform solar neutrino spectroscopy below 2 MeV. The key feature that allows Borexino to pursue this physics program is its ultra low background level. This thesis is devoted to the first direct measurement of the pep and CNO solar neutrino interaction rates in the Borexino experiment. The detection of the rare signals from pep and CNO solar neutrinos in Borexino requires novel analysis techniques, as the signal interaction rate in the active target is only a few counts per day, while the dominant background in the relevant energy region, the cosmogenic beta+ emitter carbon-11, produced in Borexino by cosmic muon interactions, is about 10 times higher.

Solar Neutrinos - Proceedings Of The 5th International Solar Neutrino Conference by Meyer Mikko,Zuber Kai Pdf

In 2018 solar physics and neutrino research celebrated various historical highlight events. Among them were 80 years of the paper by Hans Bethe discussing solar fusion cycles as energy source of stars, the first results from the Homestake chlorine experiment celebrating 50 years as well as the discovery of neutrino oscillations 20 years ago by Super-Kamiokande. Since the last International Solar Neutrino Conference in 1997, solar neutrino detection was recognized by two Nobel Prizes, given to Raymond Davis Jr. (2002) and Arthur McDonald (2015).The present proceedings volume is based on the given talks and provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of recent developments and discoveries in the field of solar neutrino physics. Articles were written by renowned experts of their field and cover a wide range in experiments and theory from current and future solar neutrino measurements, elemental abundances, nuclear astrophysics, helioseismology, impact on general neutrino physics and more. Further contributions focus on experiments like Homestake, SAGE and GALLEX which are widely known as historic milestones in the field of solar neutrino physics.

Neutrino Oscillations and Their Origin by Y Suzuki,M Nakahata,Y Itow,M Shiozawa,Y Obayashi Pdf

The discovery of neutrino oscillations in 1998 initiated efforts to form a group to work on the detailed study of the phenomenon; this study is now supported by a grant-in-aid in the specific field of neutrinos from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The aim of this working group is to put together the efforts from various fields necessary for understanding neutrino oscillations in detail from both the experimental and the theoretical point of view. The 4th International Workshop on Neutrino Oscillations and Their Origin was held to discuss recent progress in both experimental and theoretical study. Introduction to the Physics of Massive and Mixed Neutrinos by Samoil Bilenky Pdf

Small neutrino masses are the first signs of new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Since the first edition of this textbook appeared in 2010, the Nobel Prize has been awarded "for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass". The measurement of the small neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ in 2012, launched the precision stage of the investigation of neutrino oscillations. This measurement now allows such fundamental problems as the three-neutrino mass spectrum - is it normal or inverted? – and the $CP$ violation in the lepton sector to be tackled. In order to understand the origin of small neutrino masses, it remains crucial to reveal the nature of neutrinos with definite masses: are they Dirac neutrinos possessing a conserved lepton number, which distinguishes neutrinos and antineutrinos, or are they Majorana neutrinos with identical neutrinos and antineutrinos? Experiments searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay are presently under way to answer this fundamental question. The second edition of this book comprehensively discusses all these important recent developments. Based on numerous lectures given by the author, a pioneer of modern neutrino physics (recipient of the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize 2002), at different institutions and schools, it offers a gentle yet detailed introduction to the physics of massive and mixed neutrinos that prepares graduate students and young researchers entering the field for the exciting years ahead in neutrino physics.

A guide to the fascinating interplay between particle physics and astrophysics that highlights the discovery of neutrino oscillations Written by three international experts on the topic, Solar Neutrino Physics offers a review of the status of solar physics with its strong link to neutrino physics. The book explores constitutive physics and the governing equations of standard solar models. The authors also review the theory of neutrinos in the Standard Model and the related detector experiments. The book contains a summary of the results from various experiments and develops a coherent view of the current state-of-the-art of solar neutrino physics. Solar Neutrino Physics shows how solar models can be calibrated with the observational constraints of the age, mass, radius, and luminosity of the sun. The authors present general evolutionary properties of the sun as a star, past and future. They also discuss the solar neutrino production via the pp-chains and CNO-cycle, including the important role of the chemical composition of the sun. A very important source of information about the solar interior is offered by helioseismology, the study of solar oscillations. This important book: Presents a high-level overview of the field of solar neutrino physics Brings together data and their interpretation of results obtained at various solar neutrino observatories Combines the theory of nuclear reactions with solar neutrino experiments Contains a review of SNO+, JUNO, LENA, Hyper-Kamiokande, and DUNE. Neutrinos by Arnold S. Lavro Pdf

Neutrinos are one of the most abundant particles in the universe. Because they have very little interaction with matter, however, they are incredibly difficult to detect. Neutrinos are similar to the more familiar electron, with one crucial difference: neutrinos do not carry electric charge. Because neutrinos are electrically neutral, they are not affected by the electromagnetic forces which act on electrons. Three types of neutrinos are known. Each type or 'flavour' of neutrino is related to a charged particle (which gives the corresponding neutrino its name). Hence, the 'electron neutrino' is associated with the electron, and two other neutrinos are associated with heavier versions of the electron called the muon and the tau. The book presents citations from the literature for the last three years from the journal literature and the existent book literature. Access is provided by subject, author and title indexes.
