Culture, Community, and Development by Rhonda Phillips,Mark A. Brennan,Tingxuan Li Pdf

Culture is a living thing. In social settings, it is often used to represent entire ways of life, including rules, values, and expected behavior. Varying from nation to nation, neighborhood to neighborhood and beyond, even in the smallest localities, culture is a motivating factor in the creation of social identity and serves as a basis for creating cohesion and solidarity. This book explores the intersection of culture and community as a basis for locally and regionally based development by focusing on three core bodies of literature: theory, research, and practice. The first section, theory, uncovers some of the more relevant historical arguments, as well as more contemporary examinations. Continuing, the research section sheds light on some of the key concepts, variables, and relationships present in the limited study of culture in community development. Finally, the practice section brings together research and theory into applied examples from on the ground efforts. During a time where the interest to retain the uniqueness of local life, traditions, and culture is significantly increasing in community-based development, the authors offer a global exploration of the impacts of culturally based development with comparative analysis in countries such as Korea, Ireland, and the United States. A must-read for community development planners, policymakers, students, and researchers.

Bred of Heaven by Jasper Rees Pdf

Jasper Rees has always wanted to be Welsh. But despite Welsh grandparents (and a Welsh surname) he is an Englishman: by birth, upbringing and temperament. In this singular, hilarious love letter to a glorious country so often misunderstood, Rees sets out to achieve his goal of becoming a Welshman by learning to sing, play, work, worship, think - and above all, speak - like one. On the way he meets monks, tenors and politicians, and tries his hand at rugby and lambing - all the while weaving together his personal story with Wales's rich history. Culminating in a nail-biting test of Rees's Welsh-speaking skill at the National Eisteddfod, this exuberant journey of self-discovery celebrates the importance of national identity, and the joy of belonging.

Conducting Favourite Concert Pieces by Norman Del Mar Pdf

This collection of essays on the interpretation of twenty-two unusual concert pieces was assembled partly with a view to more imaginative program planning. There are many composers who may have written only one or two masterpieces, yet failed to leave a worthy oeuvre; these sadly are often forgotten or overlooked when conductors assemble programs. This compilation spans a little over a hundred years from the 19th and 20th centuries and all the works are colorful and attractive. Once again Norman Del Mar brings his expertise in handling the orchestra to a wide variety of styles. His infectious enthusiasm and broad knowledge make him an invaluable guide to the aspiring conductor, the expert, and the music-loving listener. The essays range from Russia to Spain, from Schoenberg to Kodály, from Wolf to Poulenc, with such established favorites as the overture to La Forza del Destino with its unexpected tricky moments and the Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes for which Del Mar offers suggestions from Britten himself, with whom he worked for many years.

How Did English Songs Evolve? Retrieving Information from Song Lyrics Via Natural Language Processing and Statistical Topic Modeling by Laura Zapf Pdf

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Mathematics - Statistics, grade: 1,0, University of Bamberg (Statistik und Ökonometrie), language: English, abstract: In this thesis, the similarity, the complexity, as well as the evolution of English song lyrics over the past five decades will be examined with the help of statistical methods. Hence, the central research question of this thesis is: Can information gained by Natural Language Processing and statistical topic modelling be used to determine whether and to what extent song lyrics of various genres changed over the course of the past 50 years? Based on this, the goals of this thesis are:determining how similar songs of five diverse genres (alternative, country, pop, rock, and hip-hop) are, as measured by text statistics and text features that are composed by Natural Language Processing (NLP) and text mining methods. Additionally, using these methods as well as an attempt to find out whether song lyrics are becoming less complex and therefore less sophisticated And, finally, the main target of this thesis set for itself, computing statistical topic models by applying Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), to analyse how similar the topics of songs are and whether they changed over time. This will be conducted by calculating similarity measures on the per-topic-per-word probability distributions that are output of the LDA models.

Conducting Elgar by Norman Del Mar Pdf

This is the final book in the series on orchestral conducting that Norman Del Mar had been writing until his death in February 1994. As with the previous books, each chapter is devoted to a specific work, and once again all the major orchestral works of this important composer are covered. The book culminates in an important study of The Dream of Gerontius completed by his son Jonathan, himself a conductor. Norman Del Mar was renowned in his generation as an interpreter of English music and in particular for his understanding of Elgar's music. His explanations of the subtleties of guiding an orchestra through these magnificent scores are an invaluable help to all those who seek to clarify this elusive music. Elgar's own recordings are frequently consulted but not always accepted.
