Mad Max & Sweet Sarah by Ellie Collins Pdf

Flying home from his beloved island home of O’ahu to Seattle, Max is confused and conflicted about where he’s headed and why. Talking about his feelings seems like an uncomfortable prospect, so he intends to just make it through the minimal two-week stay, then retreat to his comfort zone. As it turns out, two weeks is more than enough to change your life forever. Sarah works hard to coordinate her older brother’s first-time visit, and she is elated to finally meet him. Now that he’s here, though, Sarah’s summer plans are being derailed. Maxie seems anxious to leave—he’s brooding in his room and even fighting with other boys in the neighborhood! Sarah is desperate for a plan to keep Maxie safe and happy so she’ll have a chance at the sibling relationship she always dreamed of. She receives help from an unlikely source—Athena, Goddess of War and Wisdom. It appears Athena faces challenges with a brother of her own and, as a team, they may be able to foster some peace.

It's Time for My Story by Carol T. Williams Pdf

Soap opera story, the only mass-public form of continuing narrative today, is oral culture for our electronic era. Carol Williams' It's Time for My Story is an examination of soap opera sources, structure, and response, particularly from the critical viewpoints of psychology, both archetypal and empirical, and popular culture, specifically narratology and feminism, that uncover the true nature of the genre. First, Williams traces the development of soap opera from its immediate source in radio and television as well as from its fundamental source in age-old myth and storytelling. Then she analyzes the content and form that together make up the structure of soap opera. Finally, she looks at what soaps mean to watchers and in the process debunks many myths about soap opera (for instance, the myth that soap opera, like all television drama, is merely commercial, produced formulaically by advertisers; Williams argues that soap opera is not only a commercial product but also a popular art form derived from the wellspring of culture and folk story). She also argues that it is a form which has been depreciated because it is historically a woman's medium. Discussions with writers, creators, and fans are included throughout. Recommended to scholars and students of media, drama, popular culture, and women's studies.

Holy Cow by Sarah Macdonald Pdf

In her twenties, journalist Sarah Macdonald backpacked around India and came away with a lasting impression of heat, pollution and poverty. So when an airport beggar read her palm and told her she would return to India—and for love—she screamed, “Never!” and gave the country, and him, the finger. But eleven years later, the prophecy comes true. When the love of Sarah’s life is posted to India, she quits her dream job to move to the most polluted city on earth, New Delhi. For Sarah this seems like the ultimate sacrifice for love, and it almost kills her, literally. Just settled, she falls dangerously ill with double pneumonia, an experience that compels her to face some serious questions about her own fragile mortality and inner spiritual void. “I must find peace in the only place possible in India,” she concludes. “Within.” Thus begins her journey of discovery through India in search of the meaning of life and death. Holy Cow is Macdonald’s often hilarious chronicle of her adventures in a land of chaos and contradiction, of encounters with Hinduism, Islam and Jainism, Sufis, Sikhs, Parsis and Christians and a kaleidoscope of yogis, swamis and Bollywood stars. From spiritual retreats and crumbling nirvanas to war zones and New Delhi nightclubs, it is a journey that only a woman on a mission to save her soul, her love life—and her sanity—can survive.

Shakespeare in the Cinema by Stephen M. Buhler Pdf

Offering a comprehensive look at the strategies that filmmakers have employed in adapting Shakespeare's plays to the cinema, this book investigates what the task of Shakespearean adaptation reveals about film in general and focuses on patterns and approaches shared by various cinematic works. Buhler provides concise histories of each general strategy, which include non-illusionistic cinema, documentary interpretations, mass-market productions, transgressive and transnational cinema, and approaches that see film as either distinct from the stage or as an extension of theatrical traditions. The book spans more than a century of film, starting with the 1899 King John and extending through Michael Hoffman's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julie Taymor's Titus, and later releases.

Herlands by Keridwen N. Luis Pdf

How women-only communities provide spaces for new forms of culture, sociality, gender, and sexuality Women’s lands are intentional, collective communities composed entirely of women. Rooted in 1970s feminist politics, they continue to thrive in a range of ways, from urban households to isolated rural communes, providing spaces where ideas about gender, sexuality, and sociality are challenged in both deliberate and accidental ways. Herlands, a compelling ethnography of women’s land networks in the United States, highlights the ongoing relevance of these communities as vibrant cultural enclaves that also have an impact on broader ideas about gender, women’s bodies, lesbian identity, and right ways of living. As a participant-observer, Keridwen N. Luis brings unique insights to the lives and stories of the women living in these communities. While documenting the experiences of specific spaces in Massachusetts, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Ohio, Herlands also explores the history of women’s lands and breaks new ground exploring culture theory, gender theory, and how lesbian identity is conceived and constructed in North America. Luis also discusses how issues of race and class are addressed, the ways in which nudity and public hygiene challenge dominant constructions of the healthy or aging body, and the pervasive influence of hegemonic thinking on debates about transgender women. Luis finds that although changing dominant thinking can be difficult and incremental, women’s lands provide exciting possibilities for revolutionary transformation in society.

Dimitrius and the Gladiolas by Loretto Gubernatis Pdf

WE ARE FAMILY. br. This is about us. We are a family in all sorts and sizes. We are all in here in some way or another some of us are the writer's, my mother Anne McDonagh, her daughter Loretto (that's me) our daughters Bridgette and Debbie that's three generation of women writer's. The cover is by our grandson Zead who is an artist as is his Aunt Chrissy who is on the back cover with him above. They are the third generation artists in my family. My cousin George painted the Last Supper and the Station of the Cross at St. Mungo's Church in Glasgow Scotland. Some of us are the hero's and heroine's of the stories. I created Baby Billy and Liddle Tina for our son Joe and daughter Debbie when they were two and four years old. Now the same stories are adapted for Debbie's son Donovan and our daughter Angel's daughter Sarah. Bridgette wrote the poem in the Introduction. Our son Kevin is K. P. O'Toolahan. Our grandson Dimitri is Greek and Zead and Bassem are Egyptian I translated most titles to Irish Gaelic for Dimitri's stories. Our grandson Donovan last name is Mc Vicker and on his other grandmother's side he is descendent from Mary Wollstonecraft. But right now it's about the Irish side and I'm descended of a lot of old Irish story tellers. It's all called Blarney and all good Irish writer are full of it. There are tons of Fairy Stories and leprechauns and elves. There are magic wishing wells and fantasy lands. Join us on Cloud Nine or in Seventh Heaven. Take a trip to Egypt with Solomon de Sula. My mother's first story Gay's Adventure is in here. I've tried to translate most of the titles of the stories into Gaelic and in the case of some based on the Great Jules Vern into French. At the end there is a poem about Matilda the Mouse at Christmas Time and Father Christmas. These have been translated roughly into Gaelic, French, Spanish, Dutch, German, Welsh and Swahili. Hope you enjoy the stories and it encourages you to search your own heritage.
