D. H. Lawrence and Italy by D. H. Lawrence Pdf

In these impressions of the Italian countryside, Lawrence transforms ordinary incidents into passages of intense beauty. Twilight in Italy is a vibrant account of Lawrence's stay among the people of Lake Garda, whose decaying lemon gardens bear witness to the twilight of a way of life centuries old. In Sea and Sardina, Lawrence brings to life the vigorous spontaneity of a society as yet untouched by the deadening effect of industrialization. And Etruscan Places is a beautiful and delicate work of literary art, the record of "a dying man drinking from the founts of a civilization dedicated to life."

The B List by David Sterritt,John Anderson Pdf

What kind of collection could possibly find common ground among The Son of Kong, Platoon, and Pink Flamingos? What kind of fevered minds could conceive of such a list? What are the unheard-of qualities that tie them all together? The answers: This book. The National Society of Film Critics. And the far-reaching enticements of the B movie itself. Once the B movie was the Hollywood stepchild, the underbelly of the double feature. Today it is a more inclusive category, embracing films that fall outside the mainstream by dint of their budgets, their visions, their grit, and occasionally--sometimes essentially--their lack of what the culture cops call "good taste." The films in The B List are offbeat, unpredictable, and decidedly idiosyncratic. And that's why we love them.

Etruscan Places by D. H. Lawrence Pdf

This fascinating volume contains a collection of travel writings by D. H. Lawrence, first published after his death in 1932. In this text Lawrence compares the vibrant world of the Etruscan civilization with the dilapidation of Benito Mussolini's Italy during the late 1920s. The Etruscan civilization is the relatively modern moniker given to the civilization originating from ancient Italy in the areas of modern Tuscany, western Umbria, and northern Lazio. Not much is known of the Etruscans, and in this fascinating exploration of their culture, Lawrence pieces together what he can in order to furnish a unique insight into this lost race. The chapters of this volume include: D. H. Lawrence, Cervereri, Targuinia, The Painted Tombs of Tarquinia, Vulci, and Volterra. We are republishing this antiquarian volume now complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.

Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors by Jerry Roberts Pdf

From live productions of the 1950s like Requiem for a Heavyweight to big budget mini-series like Band of Brothers, long-form television programs have been helmed by some of the most creative and accomplished names in directing. Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors brings attention to the directors of these productions, citing every director of stand alone long-form television programs: made for TV movies, movie-length pilots, mini-series, and feature-length anthology programs, as well as drama, comedy, and musical specials of more than 60 minutes. Each of the nearly 2,000 entries provides a brief career sketch of the director, his or her notable works, awards, and a filmography. Many entries also provide brief discussions of key shows, movies, and other productions. Appendixes include Emmy Awards, DGA Awards, and other accolades, as well as a list of anthology programs. A much-needed reference that celebrates these often-neglected artists, Encyclopedia of Television Film Directors is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of the medium.

Decision Theory and Decision Behaviour by Anatol Rapoport Pdf

This book presents the content of a year's course in decision processes for third and fourth year students given at the University of Toronto. A principal theme of the book is the relationship between normative and descriptive decision theory. The distinction between the two approaches is not clear to everyone, yet it is of great importance. Normative decision theory addresses itself to the question of how people ought to make decisions in various types of situations, if they wish to be regarded (or to regard themselves) as 'rational'. Descriptive decision theory purports to describe how people actually make decisions in a variety of situations. Normative decision theory is much more formalized than descriptive theory. Especially in its advanced branches, normative theory makes use of mathematicallanguage, mode of discourse, and concepts. For this reason, the definitions of terms encountered in normative decision theory are precise, and its deductions are rigorous. Like the terms and assertions of other branches of mathematics, those of mathematically formalized decision theory need not refer to anything in the 'real', i. e. the observable, world. The terms and assertions can be interpreted in the context of models of real li fe situations, but the verisimilitude of the models is not important. They are meant to capture only the essentials of adecision situation, which in reallife may be obscured by complex details and ambiguities. It is these details and ambiguities, however, that may be crucial in determining the outcomes of the decisions.

Soundtracks by Stewart R. Craggs Pdf

First published in 1998, music scored for film has only relatively recently received the critical attention which it merits. Many composers in the twentieth century have written works for films or documentaries, a number feeling that this aspect of their output has been undervalued. This dictionary complements other studies which have appeared in recent years which look at the technical and theoretical issues concerned with film music composition. Arranged alphabetically by composer, the volume comprises over 500 entries covering all nationalities. Each entry includes very brief biographical information on the composer, followed by a list of the films (with dates) for which he or she has composed. Details of recordings are also given. The dictionary’s international coverage ensures that it will become a standard reference work for all those interested in the history of twentieth-century music and the development of film.

The String Quartet by Jos Langens Pdf

Have you ever thought about how you as a human being are part of a species that makes the fate of all other living things entirely subservient to its own needs and uses its fellow inhabitants purely to meet those needs? What would happen if that were to change? What would happen if people chose to exchange that which makes them human for something else? That's what seems to be happening in "The String Quartet". A string of seemingly inexplicable events gradually reveals how our anthropocentric way of life is about to be fundamentally and irrevocably changed. Classical string quartet music plays a central role in these events. How do these situations arise, and what is the driving force behind the sometimes irrational choices people make – or seem to make – of their own free will? The events described in The String Quartet and the resulting choices people make invite you as a reader to reflect on your own situation and how you lead your life. What choices have you made, and what choices will you make in the future? And how sure are you that those choices are yours?

The Essential Mystery Lists by Roger M Sobin Pdf

For the first time in one place, Roger M. Sobin has compiled a list of nominees and award winners of virtually every mystery award ever presented. He has also included many of the “best of” lists by more than fifty of the most important contributors to the genre.; Mr. Sobin spent more than two decades gathering the data and lists in this volume, much of that time he used to recheck the accuracy of the material he had collected. Several others have been unavailable for a number of years.; Of special note, are Anthony Boucher’s “Best Picks for the Year.” Boucher, one of the major mystery reviewers of all time, reviewed for The San Francisco Chronicle, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and The New York Times. From these resources Mr. Sobin created “Boucher’s Best” and “Important Lists to Consider,” lists that provide insight into important writing in the field from 1942 through Boucher’s death in 1968.? This is a great resource for all mystery readers and collectors.; ; Winner of the 2008 Macavity Awards for Best Mystery Nonfiction.
