Management for a Small Planet by Jean Garner Stead,W. Edward Stead Pdf

When this classic text was first published in 1992, it provided a unique focus for the burgeoning concern for sustainability and sustainable organizational practices. The book's impact continues to be felt today as large multinational corporations such as Wal-Mart and GE are making substantial commitments to the "triple bottom line" of economic success, social responsibility, and environmental protection, and sustainability has become a part of curricula in business schools around the globe. Featuring extensive new material throughout, this new edition of Management for a Small Planet is now widely available outside of North America for the first time. The book maintains the same unique vision and approach that made the original so influential. Unlike other texts on the topic, it employs a strategic, general management perspective within theoretical frameworks on how organizations can be instrumental in moving humankind toward a more sustainable world. Part I includes chapters dedicated to each dimension of sustainability: biophysical, economic, and social. Part II contains the specifics on the formulation and implementation of sustainable management practices, all grounded in the principles of organizational behavior, leadership, and business strategy. The book is an ideal text for any course concerned with environmental management and sustainable management practices.

Policies for a Small Planet by Johan Holmberg Pdf

First published in 1992. The world is not living within its means. Current development policies, in both industrial and developing countries, are wasting resources and destroying the commons on which we all depend. The world is set on a path of deepening poverty and a deteriorating environment. New policies are needed to achieve sustainable development. This book presents an integrated series of essays on the policies for sustainable development from one of the leading policy research institutes on environment and development issues. It concentrates on the developing world and looks at the specific sectors to which the policies have to be applied. Beginning with a discussion of what constitutes sustainable development, it goes on to deal with the institutional arrangements needed to mobilise human resources for change and the economic policies for sustainable natural resource management. It then examines the policies needed in agriculture, urban development, industry, forests, drylands, energy use, finance, population and consumption. Throughout it demonstrates how those directly involved are best placed to manage their environments and resources. Policies must support the experience and resourcefulness of local people. Sustainable development requires that they control their own futures. This title will be of great interest to students of Environmental Studies.

Progress for a Small Planet by Barbara Ward Pdf

Three topics dominate discussions of the global environment: pollution; the consequences of the affluent running ever faster through finite resources; and the growing tensions between rich and poor as a third of humanity continues to live and die in desperate poverty. In this exceptional book Barbara Ward (co-author with Rene Dubos of the bestselling Only One Earth) refused to see these processes as inevitable. It describes new technologies for recycling waste, for energy, forgetting more or less linking them to ordinary people's working lives. It also suggests a strategy for meeting the basic needs of the disadvantaged, and shows how the vast inequalities between countries can be reduced. This perceptive survey of policies outlines a planetary bargain between the world's nations that would guarantee individual freedom from poverty and keep our shared biosphere in good working order. Survival for a Small Planet by Tom Bigg Pdf

Few scientific developments have given rise to as much controversy as biotechnology. Numerous groups are united in their opposition, expressing concern over environmental and health risks, impacts on rural livelihoods, the economic dominance of multinational companies and the ethical implications of crossing species boundaries. Among the supporters of the technology are those that believe in its potential to enhance food security, further economic development, increase productivity and reduce environmental pressures. As a result, countries - and sectors within countries - find themselves at odds with each other while potential opportunities for development offered by the use of biotechnology are seized or missed, and related risks go unmanaged. This book, a unique interdisciplinary collection of perspectives from the developing world, examines the ongoing debate. Writing for the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, leading experts address issues such as diffusion of technology, intellectual property rights, the Cartagena Protocol, impacts of international trade, capacity building and biotechnology research and regulation. With the most recent and relevant examples from around the world, Trading in Genes offers the reader a single-volume overview of the connections between biotechnology, trade and sustainability that is both wide-ranging and thorough.

Sustainable Strategic Management by Jean Garner Stead,W. Edward Stead Pdf

“Sustainable strategic management” refers to strategic management policies and processes that seek competitive advantages consistent with a core value of environmental sustainability. This book has been specifically written as a text to augment traditional graduate and undergraduate management courses on strategic management. It fills the need for a strategy text that gives full attention to sustainability and environmental protection. The authors have structured the book to follow the usual order of topics in any standard management text. Sustainable Strategic Management also features an on-going, chapter-by-chapter case study (Eastman Chemical Company) that exemplifies many of the principles of environmentally sound management practices. From creating organizational visions, to formulating goals and strategies, to strategy implementation and evaluation, this book provides readers with new ways of thinking about their organization’s role in the greater society and ecosystem. From the Authors’ Preface:Ours is the first book to integrate sustainability into strategic management. It covers the full gamut of strategic management concepts and processes that would be expected in any quality strategic management book, and it does so in a way that thoroughly weaves sustainability into each and every one of them. Students using this book understand such things as: why reducing materials and energy intensity is an effective functionallevel strategy, why socially differentiated products command premium prices, and why a business ecosystem pursuing a vision of social and ecological responsibility can dominate its market. Further, because the book is relatively short, reasonably priced, and very thorough in its coverage of strategic management concepts and ideas, it can be used either as a stand-alone text for graduate and undergraduate strategic management courses, as a supplement to another book, or as one of a group of short texts.

Notes from a Small Planet by Brian V. Peck Pdf

"About an hour out of Phnom Penh we are transferred onto a mini-bus which takes some time to arrive, but eventually comes. Then driven at breakneck speed on a very dusty road that gets dust all over everything, coming into the city is a bit of a shock as there is no doubt about it that the outer areas do resemble the Third world, but the inner city is clean and modern. We are taken to the King's Hotel where we could choose too stay or go - as I was tired I decided to stay, but without hot water in my cheap room - well what can you expect for 5 dollars. I shared dinner with Isabel and Jeroen - who I took a real shine too. And in the morning I have breakfast with Sarah from Sweden who I had first met in Chau Doc and came on our boat when partly through the trip. Sarah was one of these very assured intelligent young women who had done a lot of travelling – as breakfast progressed I kept thinking that her body language was saying categorically too me (was old enough to be her father) or probably any man who may have tried it on with her - that if you mess with me boy I will chew both of your testicles off with one bite. Apparently she was some sort of chemist who new a lot about food and what it does to us, when we eat it. I said very little while eating my breakfast and kept my legs very tightly together".
