Oral Pharmacotherapy for Male Sexual Dysfunction by Gregory A. Broderick Pdf

For the generation that reached sexual maturity in the 1960s, the “pill” became synonymous with sexual freedom and started a sexual revolution. For women it meant freedom from the fear of pregnancy, and for men enhanced sexual opportunity. The new era of the pill has nothing to do with fertility, but everything to do with sex. The first orally effective prescr- tion drug for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) was marketed in 1998. ® Sildenafil (Viagra ) has rejuvenated the aging male veterans of the sexual revolution, forever changed the science of sexual medicine, and tra- formed society’s perspective on aging and sex. This class of drugs, known as oral phosphodiesterase inhibitors (PDE-type 5), is highly effective in the treatment of ED. Since its introduction there has been a much greater awa- ness of ED, its comorbidities, and its effects on the quality of life. In 1997, while preparing to address the Endocrine Society on the occasion of the 92nd American Urological Association meeting, I first looked at the p- clinical studies of sildenafil. I thought “this will change everything” and it clearly has—changing practice patterns in sexual medicine, and the at- tudes of patients, potential patients, and their partners. Two new PDE-type ® ® 5 inhibitors, tadalafil (Cialis ) and vardenafil (Levitra ), were first approved by the European Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products and subsequently by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003 and 2004.

This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of the intersection of male and female reproductive and sexual health. The text comprehensively discusses the evaluation and management of physical, genetic, and psychological causes of male and female sexual dysfunction. Discussion of treatment focuses on current medical and surgical psychosexual therapies in both the male and female. The book highlights erectile, ejaculatory, and orgasmic disorders in the male; desire, arousal and orgasmic disorders in the female; and an integrated approach to the couple. Lifestyle modifications through diet and exercise and optimization of anthropomorphic characteristics are also discussed, including a holistic approach to these disorders that goes beyond a focus on the genital system alone. Sexual Dysfunction in Men and Women: An Interdisciplinary Approach serves as a resource for physicians and researchers interested in sexual medicine seeking a comprehensive overview of the practice and novel research in the field.

Erectile Dysfunction by Gerald R Weeks,Nancy Gambescia Pdf

With the release of Viagra, erectile dysfunction has become an acceptable topic of advertising and public discussion. Impotence is a widespread phenomenon; about half of couples entering sex therapy and one quarter of those entering marital therapy will complain of this problem. As baby boomers enter their fifties and grow older during the next few decades, many more men will be affected by this problem. In this groundbreaking work, Gerald Weeks and Nancy Gambescia present the first serious discussion of comprehensive psychological and medical treatments for erectile dysfunction after the advent of Viagra. Though most recently Viagra has catapulted discussion of erectile dysfunction to the front pages of major newspapers and, via television, American living rooms, there are actually a number of different treatment options available. In fact, medical therapies for erectile dysfunction have developed at an ever-increasing pace in the last 20 years. Yet, despite widespread advances made in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the field of sex therapy has lagged significantly behind in how it addresses the problem. The authors offer an integrated approach that examines both the organic and psychological factors contributing to erectile dysfunction. With this treatment model integrating both medical and psychological therapies, the authors also stress the role of the couple's relationship in the etiology and treatment of the dysfunction. The book presents medical information (about various kinds of drugs as well as other interventions); physiological information (why certain drugs work and why some don't); psychological information (the effects of the disorder on both the individual and the couple); and practical information (when and how to seek treatment and what type of treatment works best under different conditions). For sex and couple therapists and physicians, Erectile Dysfunction presents a systematic method for evaluating erectile dysfunction, determining whether its basis is primarily organic or psychogenic, and treating it by integrating medical interventions with sex and marital therapy. For the person seeking treatment (and for his spouse), the book offers a thorough and impartial discussion of the disorder.

Penile Color Duplex-Doppler Ultrasound in Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosis and Management by Eduardo de Paula Miranda,Felipe Carneiro Pdf

Penile Color Duplex-Doppler Ultrasound (PDU) is one of the most important tools available to assess patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), which is a prevalent condition affecting near 50% of men over 50 years of age. Hemodynamic evaluations through PDU have also prognostic value and help choose the best treatment strategy for ED. Although PDU is an objective diagnostic method, the lack of standardized protocols is one of its main limitations and might lead to great variability in performing and interpreting penile hemodynamic studies in both clinical practice and scientific research. These factors have contributed to the fact that PDU is often considered unreliable, as it may lead to mistaken treatment protocols. The aim of the present book is to provide a complete guide to performing an adequate hemodynamic study through PDU with pharmaco-induced erection. It will provide a detailed and illustrative overview of the most common pitfalls for a correct conduction ofthis diagnostic procedure. We will also provide an extensive review of the basic principles in erection physiology and pharmacology, allowing a broader understanding of the implications of PDU in clinical practice. This book will appeal to radiologists and urologists. Its highly informative content will become the ultimate guide not only for fully trained physicians who want to optimize and standardize their procedures, but also for residents and trainees of these specialties. In addition, it will be a useful resource for sexual medicine practitioners, and may reach other specialties and/or healthcare areas such as primary care physicians, gynecologists, psychiatrists and psychologists.
