Organizing Aids by Derek Adam-Smith,David Goss Pdf

It is estimated that 90% of those who are HIV positive are in employment. However, the significant body of literature into HIV/AIDS to date has primarily focused on the medical aspects of the disease and its implications for health/social policy. There has been little analysis of the employment implications of HIV/AIDS, and what does exist is essentially descriptive and usually limited to legal features of the employment relationship. This text provides a review of the theoretical and practical issues which bear upon organisational responses to HIV/AIDS. The authors set these responses in a historical and international context, before analysing recent research findings. In the first three chapters, issues are explored through an analysis which highlights international convergences and divergences. The remaining chapters draw on the authors' research to explore the "internal" dynamics of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

HIV and AIDS in the Workplace by Marion Maguire Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1.0 (A), Hawai'i Pacific University (-), course: Lecture MBA Program, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In the business environment HIV and AIDS has become both a health and an economic problem. As the epidemic spreads throughout the workforce, Human resources personnel and managers in general must be prepared to deal effectively with the challenge of having employees who are affected by HIV and AIDS. The majority of large U.S. corporations already employ a substantial number of people who have AIDS or are infected with HIV. Integration of HIV and AIDS programs into human resources management systems should be viewed as a means to achieve overall effective human resource management and to reduce costs. Currently, only 16% of U.S. businesses offer AIDS/HIV workplace education programs to their employees. In order to deal with this issue effectively, managers need to know how HIV is transmitted, the stages of the disease, how to prevent discrimination against employees who have AIDS or are infected with HIV, and what accommodations must be provided for such workers under the ADA and other laws. They also need to learn how to manage the psychological climate of work groups that have employees with HIV or AIDS to prevent workplace disruptions. Statement of the problem HIV and AIDS have become a serious problem in all five continents. HIV continues to spread around the world and global statistics show that 34.3 million people are living with HIV in 2003, in comparison to 5.4 million in 1999. The virus impacts not only the internal system of an individual's body, but also does the infection rate affects business and the workplace. Health records show that on average HIV-infected employees have taken seventeen full days of sick leave. The cost of absenteeism, provision of hospital and medical care, training and wages for new employee's replacem

AIDS Issues in the Workplace by Dale Masi Pdf

This book provides human resource managers with the information necessary to cope with the ethical, legal, and financial issues surrounding AIDS--a disease that will eventually affect almost every workplace in the world. Masi offers a comprehensive Program Integration Model approach to managing the disease and shows how to develop effective policies, implement educational programs, and adapt existing Employee Assistance Programs to provide the most cost-effective and comprehensive service to employees dealing with AIDS. Unlike other books on the subject, AIDS Issues in the Workplace addresses the particular concerns of all populations affected by the disease including health-care workers, police and fire workers, persons in the arts, restaurant and hotel employees, and employees overseas. Women and minorities, substance-abusers, and the families of those afflicted with AIDS are addressed specifically. The author provides current legal information to help the employer avoid costly litigation and reviews actual policies employed by major corporations in both the public and private sectors. The result is the most comprehensive presentation of the issues related to AIDS in the workplace yet available in book form. Masi begins by examining the latest medical information on AIDS and its transmission as well as the legal issues involved. She then turns to a discussion of company policy development, demonstrating both why a clearly stated policy is important and what it should cover. Subsequent chapters point to the critical importance of continuous education in the workplace, discuss why EAPs have so far failed to be substantially involved in AIDS, and suggest roles that EAPs could serve. Three chapters address the needs and concerns of special populations and how employers can best serve these needs without appearing discriminatory. A separate chapter includes interviews with individuals who have experienced a range of AIDS-related issues in the workplace. The volume concludes with a list of resources and an appendix containing original documents from such sources as the Centers for Disease Control's Universal Precautions, their Recommendations for Health Care Settings, and handicapped legislation. Anyone confronted with the challenge of developing appropriate human resource strategies to deal with AIDS will find this book an indispensable resource.

Workplace Drug Abuse and AIDS by Donald Klingner,Nancy G. O'Neill Pdf

Throughout the 1980s, the issue of substance abuse testing became increasingly important to employers. And now the growing problem of AIDS and its impact on the workplace provides a related area of concern. In this work, Donald Klingner tells human resource professionals what they need to know about both these topics. The book carefully details the effects these problems have on employers, and provides specific recommendations for human resource management policy and practice which can reduce the employer's costs and legal liability risks while preserving employee rights. Following a general introduction that lays the foundation for the discussion, the book is divided into two main sections. The first addresses the intricacies of substance abuse and testing, presenting six chapters that survey substance abuse in the workplace; substance abuse testing techniques; substance abuse testing and the law; personnel policies and practices; employee assistance programs; and working with employees and unions. The second section covers the issue of AIDS and AIDS testing through four chapters: AIDS in the workplace; AIDS testing techniques; AIDS testing and the law; and personnel policies and practices. A concluding chapter provides a summary of both areas. This work will be a valuable reference tool for public and private-sector managers--supervisors, managers, trainers and personnel specialists--responsible for developing or implementing substance abuse or AIDS policy and practice. Public, college and university libraries will also find it a timely addition to their collections.
