Māori Design Principles versus Western Design Principles - comparing and contrasting. by William Van Zyl Pdf

This article overviews an indigenous culture's design approach: New Zealand Māori. I contrast and compare this cultural and spiritual approach with a typical Western World Design approach. It sheds light on the Māori (New Zealand's indigenous people) way of design and shows their interpretation of the world. Furthermore, I compare Māori Design Principles with General Design Principles. Then, I look at patterns - specifically the Flounder Fish (diamond shape) pattern - and some modern NZ buildings that reflect this specific pattern. I also touch on abstract design concepts and ideas for architecture - using Māori abstract art as inspiration. Lastly, I touch on using AI for design ideas (Playground AI). See the stunning design images created by Playground AI with the Māori Flounder Fish pattern (diamond shape) as the focus. The AI prompt included 'a modern contemporary house with many Māori shapes, forms and patterns.' This resource concludes and culminates with a spectacular design at the end! Don't miss it. For Designers, artists, architects, and Design and Visual Communication (DVC) students.

Maori Art for Kids by Julie Noanoa,Norm Heke Pdf

This collection of 15 projects offers children aged 7 and over a range of unique Maori art experiences. Practical skills cover sculpture, photography, design, paint, mixed media, collage and more. Easy-to-follow instructions include illustrations of the steps involved, using everyday craft materials, recycled and found objects. Examples of taonga (treasures) created by leading contemporary artists are shown alongside each project with a brief explanation of the object, its purpose and use in the past and present. While teaching as a museum/art gallery educator, the author had numerous requests from parents, teachers and educators over the years for ideas on how they could teach art and Maori culture to their children. These projects have been compiled in response to those requests, along with research and observation about how children connect with art. By engaging in these projects children will recognise that art takes many forms and can be enjoyed by everyone. This book will appeal to anyone looking for art activities that focus on Maori art and culture, and will suit both girls and boys. An emphasis on upcycling means that the ideas are accessible to the budget conscious without compromising on quality.

Architectural Design: Māori, Christian, and Modernist Influences - A New Zealand Perspective. by William Van Zyl Pdf

Has your world been turned upside-down at some point? Please take a look at the innovative and creative ideas in this article. What do you see? What ideas do you have? What would it be if I asked you to develop a unique idea or concept for a spatial design? How can Māori shapes, forms, patterns and colours be embedded in a spatial design? That is the question teachers of Design and Visual Communication (DVC) will ask their students next year (2024). Why? Because they will be doing a new curriculum in New Zealand (High School context). Designers, architects, artists, teachers, and students will benefit from this article. Please take a look at the CAMERA OBSCURA, created by three different people - a photographer, a sculptor, and an architect. I include a picture of this outstanding creative effort by three artists in New Zealand. Don't miss this brilliant design. To whet your appetite - about the CAMERA OBSURA. The Whangārei Camera Obscura is an interactive sculpture on the Hātea Loop walk (Whangarei - New Zealand). A camera obscura is a darkened room with a small hole or lens at one side through which an image is projected onto a wall or table opposite the hole. Visitors can enter the shell-like structure to find a surprising "upside-down projection room" inside showing the celebrated Bascule bridge, Te Matau ā Pohe and its surroundings, complete with vehicles, boats, people, scudding clouds and flowing water. The attraction offers visitors and residents simple yet wonderful phenomena of light projection and educational opportunities. Visitors can adjust the image using a movable aperture on the wall of the camera obscura. It is one of only a handful of obscura sculptures worldwide and is among the largest. Maori Art by Dr Rangihiroa Panoho Pdf

Up until now books on Maori art have described the work as either traditional (carving, weaving, painting) or contemporary, work produced post-1950s. This book presents a unique focus on Maori art by exploring the connection between the traditional and contemporary, and the place of Maori art within an international context. Maori Art provides a framework for looking at Maori art in a new way and fills a gap in Maori art history - while there are myriad surveys of Maori art there is currently very little critical writing on Maori art and artists. The book is extensively illustrated with over 400 art works, landscapes and meeting houses, many never published before, including 100 specially commissioned photographs from renowned New Zealand photographers Mark Adams and Haruhiko Sameshima.

Māori Worldview and Architectural Design. by William Van Zyl Pdf

The Māori worldview, deeply rooted in indigenous New Zealand culture, shapes how architectural design is conceptualised, executed, and experienced. It is a holistic perspective that interweaves spiritual, cultural, and environmental dimensions, resulting in architecture that reflects the Māori connection to the land, ancestors, and the spiritual realm. What type of unique building, house, landmark, chapel, church, marae, or shade space would you design to reflect and represent your worldview? I am referring to symbolism-related shapes, forms, patterns, and colours. What would be the main shapes and forms you will use to convey your worldview in a building? In this short eBook, I explore a Māori worldview and architecture in a New Zealand context. I briefly look at other worldviews for architectural design.
