The Nature of California by Sarah D. Wald Pdf

The California farmlands have long served as a popular symbol of Americas natural abundance and endless opportunity. Yet, from John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath and Carlos Bulosans America Is in the Heart to Helena Maria Viramontess Under the Feet of Jesus, many novels, plays, movies, and songs have dramatized the brutality and hardships of working in the California fields. Little scholarship has focused on what these cultural productions tell us about who belongs in America, and in what ways they are allowed to belong. In The Nature of California, Sarah Wald analyzes this legacy and its consequences by examining the paradoxical representations of California farmers and farmworkers from the Dust Bowl migration to present-day movements for food justice and immigrant rights. Analyzing fiction, nonfiction, news coverage, activist literature, memoirs, and more, Wald gives us a new way of thinking through questions of national belonging by probing the relationships among race, labor, and landownership. Bringing together ecocriticism and critical race theory, she pays special attention to marginalized groups, examining how Japanese American journalists, Filipino workers, United Farm Workers members, and contemporary immigrants-rights activists, among others, pushed back against the standard narratives of landownership and citizenship.

Death and Bereavement Around the World by John D Morgan,Stephen Palmer,Pittu Laungani,Dale A Lund Pdf

This final volume of ""Death and Bereavement Around the World"" reflects on some major themes: death and after-life, religion and spirituality, rites and rituals, secularist approaches, cultural variations, suicide, and other issues. The first few chapters describe progress in end-of-life care, including some new tools to evaluate hospice care (chapter 1); what children know, when they know it, and how parents can respond to questions, with some guidelines for support by schools (chapter 2); the importance of ritual (chapter 3); and, gender differences in death customs around the world (chapter 4).The transcript of a 1997 interview of John (Jack) Morgan by Pittu Laungani is presented as chapter 5. The following chapters discuss death systems and suicide (chapter 6); HIV/AIDS, including the role of cultural and economic factors in the spread of the disease (chapter 7); and grief and bereavement in the developing world, taking the AIDS pandemic as a specific challenge (chapter 8). Chapter 9 covers issues related to dying and death in Romania. In chapter 10 the focus is on the various functions and uses of names in a cross-cultural context. Roadside memorials as a pivotal healing strategy are the topic of chapter 11. Chapters 12 and 13 focus on spiritual experience with loss. The final chapter presents some conclusions, and in the Epilogue, Mary Ann Morgan honors the life, career, dying, death, and achievements of John (Jack) Morgan. The 'Final Word' includes the words of Pittu Laungani, from a book published just weeks before his death in February 2007.This work is for anyone interested in or working in death and bereavement issues, particularly academics, educators, librarians, chaplains, clergy, funeral service directors, hospice care providers and volunteers, palliative care providers, nurses, immigration officers, psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists, and counselors, especially bereavement counselors.

Hero Road by Gary Smith Pdf

Hero Road tells the thrilling and uplifting journey of a military man who made a difference. Sean McNeal, a former army sniper, arrives at Ft. Stewart, Georgia, to take charge of a group of misfit ammunition handlers known as the Beefers. Over time, he gains the trust and loyalty of these young soldiers and they gain his. The group evolves into a tight-knit tactical unit, going from one covert operation to the next, including deployments to Iraq. With the help of his men, McNeal employs his old sniper skills to bring a dangerous drug lord down, thereby putting an end to the haunting nightmares of his past. Says the author, "One of the characters in the book, my son-in-law, actually belongs to a band of army buddies who have been together since basic training and several deployments. Each man comes from a different cultural and economic background. One day, Oliver related several humorous escapades of the Beefers as ammo handlers. They each possess their own brand of humor, but when it comes to getting the job done, they are all business. Those stories gave me the inspiration to begin the Hero Road project, giving them a new leader with a troubled past." Gary Smith retired from the U.S. Army in 1992 and immediately began studying for an undergraduate degree in elementary education at Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia. Graduating in 1996, he then completed a graduate degree and began teaching elementary school in Savannah. He has also taught in Vidalia, Reidsville, and Glennville, Georgia. He retired from teaching in 2011 and published his autobiography Patriot Son: Memoirs of a Veteran the same year. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/GarySmith
