Camp Pendleton: The Historic Rancho Santa Margarita Y Las Flores and the U.S. Marine Corps in Southern California by Breanne Robertson Phd Pdf

From the Introduction: Approximately 50 miles north of San Di-ego, the historic Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores (now known as the Santa Margarita Ranch House National Historic Site and Las Flores Adobe National Historic Landmark) has borne witness to the sweeping and often dramatic events that produced Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and the modern Marine Corps on the West Coast. Soon after the purchase of the ex-pansive ranch land in 1942, Marines established a permanent training installation and returned to Southern California as part of the largest nation-al mobilization effort for war since World War I. Nearby, the Santa Margarita Ranch House would serve as a primary residence for Marine Corps commanders for the next 60 years. The role of Camp Pendleton was essential to the development of an expeditionary Marine Corps both during and after the Second World War. Over the course of seven decades, the Ma-rines assigned to the West Coast facility have demonstrated tremendous mobility and com-bat efficiency as the nation's foremost "force in eadiness." As the primary installation for train-ing Marines for the Pacific theater during World War II, Camp Pendleton quickly expanded to ac-commodate the influx of recruits while simulta-neously developing a rigorous training program in amphibious operations. During the Cold War, the military post again served as the gateway for Marines bound for combat in Asia. The wars in Korea and Vietnam each required expediency and flexibility on the part of the Marine Corps, which swiftly rebuilt its forces for deployment abroad. A continued emphasis on amphibious landings combined with naval and air support facilitated Marine combat and counterinsurgen-cy efforts during these conflicts and secured the distinct mission and reputation of the Service for decades to come. In the post-9/11 era, Camp Pendleton continues to prepare Marines for rap-id deployment to humanitarian and combat op-erations around the globe.

Fear Is Just a Word by Azam Ahmed Pdf

A riveting true story of a mother who fought back against the drug cartels in Mexico, pursuing her own brand of justice to avenge the kidnapping and murder of her daughter—from a global investigative correspondent for The New York Times “Azam Ahmed has written a page-turning mystery but also a stunning, color-saturated portrait of the collapse of formal justice in one Mexican town.”—Steve Coll, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Directorate S Fear Is Just a Word begins on an international bridge between Mexico and the United States, as fifty-six-year-old Miriam Rodríguez stalks one of the men she believes was involved in the murder of her daughter Karen. He is her target number eleven, a member of the drug cartel that has terrorized and controlled what was once Miriam’s quiet hometown of San Fernando, Mexico, almost one hundred miles from the U.S. border. Having dyed her hair red as a disguise, Miriam watches, waits, and then orchestrates the arrest of this man, exacting her own version of justice. Woven into this deeply researched, moving account is the story of how cartels built their power in Mexico, escalated the use of violence, and kidnapped and murdered tens of thousands. Karen was just one of the many people who disappeared, and Miriam, a brilliant, strategic, and fearless woman, begged for help from the authorities and paid ransom money she could not afford in hopes of saving her daughter. When that failed, she decided that “fear is just a word,” and began a crusade to track down Karen’s killers and to help other victimized families in their search for justice. What do people do when their country and the peaceful town where they have grown up become unrecognizable, suddenly places of violence and fear? Azam Ahmed takes us into the grieving of a country and a family to tell the mesmerizing story of a brave and brilliant woman determined to find out what happened to her daughter, and to see that the criminals who murdered her were punished. Fear Is Just a Word is an unforgettable and moving portrait of a woman, a town, and a country, and of what can happen when violent forces leave people to seek justice on their own.

Alta California by Nick Neely Pdf

This national bestseller chronicles one man’s 650–mile trek on foot from San Diego to San Francisco—sure to appeal to readers of naturalist works like Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire, Paul Thoreau’s On the Plain of Snakes, and Mark Kenyon’s That Wild Country. In 1769, an expedition led by Gaspar de Portolá sketched a route that would become, in part, the famous El Camino Real. It laid the foundation for the Golden State we know today, a place that remains as mythical and captivating as any in the world. Despite having grown up in California, Nick Neely realized how little he knew about its history. So he set off to learn it bodily, with just a backpack and a tent, trekking through stretches of California both lonely and urban. For twelve weeks, following the journal of expedition missionary Father Juan Crespí, Neely kept pace with the ghosts of the Portolá expedition—nearly 250 years later. Weaving natural and human history, Alta California relives Neely’s adventure, while telling a story of Native cultures and the Spanish missions that soon devastated them, and exploring the evolution of California and its landscape. The result is a collage of historical and contemporary California, of lyricism and pedestrian serendipity, and of the biggest issues facing California today—water, agriculture, oil and gas, immigration, and development—all of it one step at a time. “Rich in little–known history . . . Up the Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county coasts, then inland into the Salinas Valley to Monterey Bay. Somewhere along here, the owl moons and woodpeckers do something you might not have thought possible in 2019: they make you fall, or refall, in love with California, ungrudgingly, wildfires and insane housing prices and all . . . What a journey, you think. What a state." —San Francisco Chronicle

University Sheepdog in Westwood, L.A. by Terrence Duren Pdf

Retired UCLA Police Officer, Terrence Duren, at the center of the 2006 UCLA Taser Incident, writes his memoir, “University Sheepdog in Westwood, Los Angeles" to set the record straight regarding his life and law enforcement career. There were television news reports and articles written about the Taser incident and of Terrence Duren's past. Some of these news reports and articles were unflattering and did not paint a complete picture of him and other officers involved in the Taser incident. In addition to the protests held at UCLA and other UC campuses, there were high volume of telephone calls to UCLA with people voicing their anger and support over the Taser incident. These telephone calls came from people living in the United States and abroad. There was such a high volume of phone calls that UCLA’s telecommunications nearly broke down. After a complete and thorough investigation, the UCLA police chief as well as UCLA campus administrators, concluded that Officer Duren did not violate policy with his use of the Taser. "University sheepdog in Westwood, Los Angeles" is a memoir that gives a better understanding of Officer Terrence Duren and his former colleagues. This memoir is a story of "Sheepdogs" (police officers), protecting the "Sheep" (students\faculty\staff\visitors and others), from the "Wolves" (criminals). Some of the contents in this memoir will tell of Terrence Duren's Officer Involved Shootings, on and off campus, his working undercover for six months buying narcotics from UCLA hospital employees, his confrontation with members of the Nation of Islam, his SWAT standoff with an armed suspect, lewd and lascivious activity in the men's restrooms, his mentoring victims and suspects, flimflammer, and more! Additionally, this Memoir has contents regarding Terrence's childhood growing up around Black Panthers, his service in the United States Marine Corps in peace time and during the First Gulf War. This memoir is unlike any other police story ever told. As you read this memoir, sit down and strap up because you are about to go on a ride!
