Hooks by Julie Oakes Pdf

When West meets East in India, tradition, modernity, and necessity cast disturbing slants on the truth. When Georgia accepts the assignment to research prostitution in India, she enters blithely, confident of her ability to remain objective in the face of the difficult subject matter. Provided with an Indian guide, Karma, Georgia feels that she is in control of her well-being and safety. But India, being India, soon overwhelms her preconceptions as Karma’s first attempt to facilitate her assignment is to arrange for her to witness an encounter between a prostitute and a john. Told in two voices, Georgia’s and Karma’s, Hooks grapples with the discrepancies between a Western and an Eastern take on prostitution in a country where tradition, modernity, and necessity cast disturbing slants on the truth. A morality tale told from vastly different personal circumstances and orientations, Hooks draws in the uninitiated Georgia, as she in turn helps the grieving Karma to realize a route away from his spoiled hopes.

Meet Vish Puri, India’s most private investigator. Portly, persistent, and unmistakably Punjabi, he cuts a determined swath through modern India’s swindlers, cheats, and murderers. In hot and dusty Delhi, where call centers and malls are changing the ancient fabric of Indian life, Puri’s main work comes from screening prospective marriage partners, a job once the preserve of aunties and family priests. But when an honest public litigator is accused of murdering his maidservant, it takes all of Puri’s resources to investigate. With his team of undercover operatives—Tubelight, Flush, and Facecream—Puri combines modern techniques with principles of detection established in India more than two thousand years ago, and reveals modern India in all its seething complexity.

Finally a pudding recipe is offered. Penned by a retired grumpy Old Man as a guide for fellow harassed males allowing them to transport and manufacture their favorite cuisine to their own dining room - instead of traveling miles to find an ethnic restaurant in which to spend a fortune on grub they can easily cook themselves - saving a good few quid and allowing them to do their impression of the late and much lamented Keith Floyd, without worrying about the boys in blue on the way home, also putting them on their bride's team, providing they clean up after themselves in HER kitchen...

Details for Kismetwali and Other Stories Set against the backdrop of modern-day India, Kismetwali and Other Stories places the reader amidst circumstances that transcend place, purse and prestige. This octet of novellas offers a rare glimpse into the parallel lives of the privileged and penniless, converging on those astonishing moments when free will intercepts fate and the rigid divide between social classes is rendered insignificant. Each narrative showcases walas and walis of the working class—the common yet essential purveyors of goods and providers of service—as empowered individuals who take centre stage. The shavewala, a humble barber, becomes an intimate collaborator in a love story that spans the seven seas; the malishwali, a long-serving masseuse, conceals her mistress’s shocking secret while offering a gift of revelation to another; the kismetwali, a clairvoyant of unremarkable pedigree, solicits cosmic benefaction for her affluent clients. These socially eclipsed characters are the true protagonists in every story. About Reetika Khanna Nijhawan Reetika Khanna Nijhawan was born and raised in a small town in northern India. Evolution of Cinema by Midhun Moorthi C Pdf

Cinema has undergone significant development since its inception in the nineteenth century. In the past two centuries and beyond, technological progress and innovative experimentation have been prevalent. Each successive film movement as well as filmmaking technique contributed to the development of the art form we adore today. A comprehensive understanding of films necessitates an understanding of cinema, and an appreciation for cinema requires an acknowledgment that, unlike any other art form, it has consistently been influenced by external forces, primarily due to its immense popularity. Furthermore, cinema possesses the capacity to shape history in its own right. While it is not advisable to write histories of literature and music as straightforward biographies of authors and their works, omitting any discussion of printing and recording technologies, the industries that utilize them, or the contemporary world where artists and their audiences operated, is possible but not recommended. Cinema renders this task unattainable. Placing films within their proper context is fundamental to the endeavor of this book; without it, they would be devoid of existence, much less significance. This entails acknowledging that while demands of industry and art in the film industry may not always coincide, they are not inherently contradictory. Instead, it is the case that they lack proportionality. Cinema, as an industrial art form, has evolved to incorporate industrialized methods of art production. Nevertheless, this is a fact that has proven to be exceedingly challenging for traditional aesthetics to accept. Conversely, numerous films exist that establish an artistic value that contradicts the principles of the industry upon which their production hinged. Moreover, there are numerous instances where the artistic merit of a given film is, to put it mildly, questionable.
